Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the third son of Jacob and the founder of one of the tribes of Israel? (Genesis 29:34)

Answer: Levi

Levi was the son of Jacob and Leah and the founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Leah was also the mother of five other boys -- Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. Levi is perhaps best known for going on a killing spree with his brother Simeon after Shechem defiled their sister Dinah, as per the 34th chapter of Genesis.
2. According to Scripture, where were the Israelites defeated in battle with the Ark of Covenant of the LORD captured by the Philistines? (1 Samuel 4:1)

Answer: Ebenezer

The Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD at Ebenezer. Details are given in the fourth chapter of 1 Samuel, with Verse 10 stating Israel lost 30,000 foot soldiers in the bloody battle. Subsequent chapters tell of Philistines being beset with plagues and the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD eventually being returned to the Israelites.
3. According to the first chapter of Esther, what was the name of the queen who was deposed by the king known as Ahasuerus in the NKJV Bible and Xerxes in the NIV? (Esther 1:12)

Answer: Vashti

Queen Vashti was deposed after she refused to obey a request of King Ahasuerus. In Esther 1:10, it states the king asked Queen Vashti to wear her royal crown and come before him to "show her beauty" to the people and the nobles. Esther 1:12, in the NKJV Bible, states: "But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command brought by his eunuchs; therefore the king was furious, and his anger burned within him." It was the end for her and a new beginning for Esther who would become queen.
4. In Biblical tradition, who is generally perceived to be the father of the Arab nations?

Answer: Ishmael

Ishmael is considered to be the founder of the Arab nations. His mother was Hagar, an Egyptian servant of Sarah. Because Sarah was unable to conceive, she gave permission to her husband Abraham to sleep with Hagar and as a result Ishmael was born. This account can be found in the 16th chapter of Genesis, where Abraham was known as Abram and Sarah was known as Sarai at the time. (Their names were changed to Abraham and Sarah in the 17th chapter.)

Incidentally, Ishmael is the name of five other men in the Old Testament. For example, 2 Kings 25:25 tells of Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, murdering Gedaliah.
5. Out of the names listed below, which one was a judge of Israel, serving for 23 years? (Judges 10:1-2)

Answer: Tola

Tola is the correct answer. According to Judges 10:1-2, Tola judged Israel for 23 years. Scripture states Tola was the son of Puah and the grandson of Dodo and he lived in Shamir in the hill-country of Ephraim. According to the two passages, Tola "rose to save Israel". After he died he was buried in Shamir, according to Scripture.
6. What's the name of the populous Asian country mentioned twice in the book of Esther in the KJV, NKJV and the NIV? (Esther 1:1 and 8:9)

Answer: India

Yes, the placename India can be found twice in the Old Testament in the KJV, NKJV and the NIV. 'India' is mentioned in Esther 1:1 and 8:9. It was the eastern extent of the kingdom ruled by the Persian king known as Ahasuerus in the KJV and Xerxes in the NIV.

According to Christiananswers.net, the people and the products of India were well known to the Israelites, who seem to have carried on an active trade with that country (Ezekiel 27:15-24).
7. Scripture tells of Solomon importing merchandise from Lebanon for the construction of God's temple. What did Solomon import from Lebanon? (1 King 5:6-9)

Answer: cedars

Lebanon, of course, is famous for its cedars and has a cedar tree depicted on its flag. The cedar tree appears on a white background between two red horizontal bars. The fifth chapter of 1 Kings tells of Solomon importing cedars from Lebanon for the construction of a temple to honor the LORD.

The seventh chapter of 1 Kings tells of Solomon constructing other buildings with one known as the House of the Forest of Lebanon.
8. After committing adultery with Bathsheba, King David made arrangements to have her husband killed in battle. What was his name? (2 Samuel 11:3)

Answer: Uriah

Yes, Uriah was the first husband of Bathsheba, David's most famous wife. After David learned Bathsheba was pregnant through an adulterous affair he had with her, he ended up conspiring to have Uriah murdered. The adultery took place while Uriah, a soldier, was in battle.

After plotting and scheming, David eventually ordered Uriah to be placed in the front line where the fighting was fiercest and then had all the men withdraw, as per 2 Samuel 11:15. True to plan, Uriah was killed.
9. What king, according to a prophet of God, was supposed to have been named Jedidiah? (2 Samuel 12:24-25)

Answer: Solomon

Jedidiah is the correct answer. 2 Samuel 12:24-25, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Now the LORD loved him, and He sent word by the hand of Nathan the prophet: So he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD." According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Jedidiah means "Beloved of the Lord."
10. Now take the first letter of each answer to come up with the nine-letter word that belongs below:

Answer: Leviticus

The correct answer is Leviticus, the third book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament of the English Bible.

It appears after Genesis and Exodus and before Numbers. Tradition holds Moses was the writer of Leviticus but many nineteenth and twentieth century scholars are doubtful such is the case. Leviticus is largely devoted to extensive instructions for the atonement of moral impurity by the Israelites.
