Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Judges 10:3-5, who was the eighth judge of Israel?

Answer: Jair

Jair is the correct answer. According to the 10th chapter of Judges, Jair replaced Tola and led Israel for 22 years. The fourth verse states he had 30 sons who rode 30 donkeys and they controlled 30 towns in Gilead. When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon, as per Judges 10:5.

Jair is also the name of three other men in the Old Testament.
2. Who was the husband of Naomi and the father-in-law of Ruth and Orpah?

Answer: Elimelek

Elimelek is the correct answer, but not much is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference. According to Ruth 1:2, Elimelek and his wife Naomi were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. They were the parents of two sons, Mahlon and Kilion, who married Orpah and Ruth, two Moabite women. According to Ruth 1:3-5, Elimelek and his two sons died, leaving Naomi, Orpah and Ruth as widows.
3. What woman stole the household gods of her father and then said she was menstruating to prevent him from finding the items? (Genesis 31:19)

Answer: Rachel

Rachel is the correct answer. The unusual story is told in the 31st chapter of Genesis. Verse 19 tells of Rachel stealing the household gods after her husband Jacob had a quarrel with her father Laban. Verses 34-35, in the NIV Bible, tells what happened when Laban went looking for his missing items: "Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them inside her camel's saddle and was sitting on them. Laban searched through everything in the tent but found nothing. Rachel said to her father, 'Don't be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence; I'm having my period.' So he searched but could not find the household gods."

Verses 34 and 35 in the NKJV explains things this way: "Now Rachel had taken the household idols, put them in the camel's saddle, and sat on them. And Laban searched all about the tent but did not find them. And she said to her father, 'Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise before you, for the manner of women is with me.' And he searched but did not find the household idols."
4. According to 2 Samuel 6:3-11, who was struck down for touching the Ark of God?

Answer: Uzzah

Uzzah is the correct answer. The sixth chapter of Samuel tells of David and 30,000 "choice men of Israel" taking the Ark of God from Baalah to Jerusalem. According to the fifth verse, the Israelites were ecstatic with David and all the house of Israel playing "music before the LORD on all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals." Then things took a dramatic turn.

2 Samuel 6:6-7, in the NKJV Bible, states: "And when they came to Nachon's threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God."

The same verses in the NIV explains things this way: "When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD'S anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God."
5. Who was the son of Manoah and a judge of Israel? (Judges 13:21-24)

Answer: Samson

Samson is the correct answer. He was betrayed by his mistress Delilah, of course. Scripture states he had immense strength, enabling him to wrestle with a lion and slay 1,000 soldiers with only the jawbone of a donkey. When Delilah discovered the secret to Samson's super-strength was his long hair, she had his locks cut off and delivered the immensely weakened Samson to his enemies who blinded and imprisoned him.

When Samson's hair grew back, his strength was restored and he caused a temple to collapse destroying thousands of Philistines as well as himself, as per Judges 16:23-31.

The final verse states Samson led Israel for twenty years.
6. Out of the four choices below, which is the only one that is a book in the Minor Prophet section of the Old Testament of the English Bible?

Answer: Amos

The book of Amos is regarded as one of the twelve Minor Prophets in the English Bible and it was written by a prophet with the same name. The twelve books are called the Minor Prophets simply because they are much shorter than the books of the Major Prophets. The Major Prophets include Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel.

However, the writings of the Minor Prophets are seen as just as relevant. According to Bible.org, the term 'Minor Prophets' originated in the fourth century, during the time of Augustine.

In the Hebrew Bible, the Minor Prophets are known as the Twelve Prophets.
7. According to Genesis 29:17 in the NKJV, Rachel had "a lovely figure and was beautiful" while another woman had eyes that were "delicate." What's the name of the woman with delicate eyes?

Answer: Leah

Leah, the sister of Rachel, is the correct answer. (In the NIV, it says Leah had "weak eyes" rather than delicate eyes.) Both Lean and Rachel were married to Jacob. However, Scripture makes it clear Rachel was highly favored over Leah. In fact, Jacob never wanted to marry Leah and was tricked into doing so by her father Laban. The story is told in the 29th chapter of Genesis.
8. What Old Testament prophet caused an axhead to float to the surface after it was lost in the Jordan River? (2 Kings 6:1-7)

Answer: Elisha

The story of the floating axhead appears in 2 Kings 6:1-7. In a nutshell, Elisha and a group of prophets were cutting trees along the Jordan River to build a new place to live when suddenly an axhead fell into the water. The prophet who lost the axhead was apparently filled with distress as it was borrowed.

When Elisha asked the man where the axhead fell, the spot was pointed out to him. 2 Kings, 6:6-7, in the NKJV Bible, states: "...Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float. 'Lift it out,' he said.

Then the man reached out his hand and took it."
9. Who was the first wife of King David? (1 Samuel 18)

Answer: Michal

Michal is the correct answer. It's a long story, but Saul, the father of Michal, ordered David to produce the foreskins from 100 Philistines to win his daughter's hand, as he firmly believed David would be killed in the process and he would no longer have to contend with him. According to the 18th chapter of 1 Samuel, David killed twice as many Philistines as needed and easily won Michal's hand, much to the consternation of Saul.
10. Now take the first letter of each correct answer to come up with a nine-letter placename found in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament of the English Bible.

Answer: Jerusalem

Jerusalem is the correct answer. Using the New King James Version Bible, the placename Jerusalem is found 661 times in the Old Testament. In 2 Chronicles alone, Jerusalem appears 118 times. The placename also appears 99 times in Jeremiah, 57 times in 2 Kings and 51 times in Isaiah. It was from Jerusalem kings ruled over Israel, and later over Judah. For Christians, Jews and Muslims, Jerusalem is a holy city.
