Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Genesis 5:21, who was the father of Methuselah?

Answer: Enoch

Enoch is the correct answer. According to Genesis 5:27, Methuselah was the oldest person in the Bible, dying at age 969 years. Enoch's claim to fame is that he didn't die. According to Genesis 5:24, he was taken up into heaven.
2. According to 2 Kings 16:10-16, who was the high priest in Ahaz's time, as per the NKJV and KJV? (In the NIV, the name is slightly different.)

Answer: Urijah

Urijah, who is also known as Urriah in the NIV, is the correct answer. 2 Kings 16:10-16, in the NKJV, tells of King Ahaz meeting in Damascus with Tiglath-Pileser, king of Assyria, and seeing an altar that deeply impressed him. So Ahaz commissioned Urijah to build an altar of the same design as the one in Damascus.
3. Who was one of the twin sons of Judah and Tamar? (Genesis 38:29)

Answer: Perez

The correct answer is Perez, an ancestor of King David, as per Ruth 4:18-22. Perez's name also shows up in the genealogy of Jesus in the third chapter of Luke. The twin brother of Perez was Zerah. Genesis 38:28-30, in the NIV Bible, offers this account of Tamar giving birth: "As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, 'This one came out first.' But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, 'So this is how you have broken out!' And he was named Perez.

Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out. And he was named Zerah."
4. Adonijah attempted to become king, replacing his father David. He was thwarted in his plans, however, by Bathsheba, with Solomon becoming king. Who was the mother of Adonijah? (1 Kings 1:5)

Answer: Haggith

The correct answer is Haggith, but little is known about her as she is mentioned only in passing reference. Her name appears five times in the Old Testament, and in each case Adonijah is referred to as the son of Haggith. For Adonijah not to become king would have likely been a bitter disappointment for Haggith as the Queen Mother would have been the most powerful woman in the land.
5. Obed was the grandfather of David. Who was Obed's mother? (Ruth 4:17)

Answer: Ruth

The birth of Obed is recorded in Ruth 4:13-17. Her husband was Boaz and much of the book of Ruth in the Old Testament is devoted to their romance. Obed would become the father of Jesse, who would become the father of eight sons, with David being the youngest. Scripture states Ruth and Orpah, two Moabite women, were both married to sons of Naomi. All three women became widows with Orpah returning to her home country and Ruth opting to stick things out with her mother-in-law. Ruth's name is listed in Matthew 1:5 as part of the genealogy of Christ.
6. To avoid being killed, a man in the Old Testament requested his wife tell the people in the foreign land where they were living that he was actually her brother. What are the names of the bogus brother-sister team? (Genesis 12:13)

Answer: Abram and Sarai

The correct answer is Abram and Sarai, who later became known as Abraham and Sarah. The ruse took place while they were forced to move to Egypt due to a famine. Notes in the NIV Study Bible state "if Pharaoh were to add Sarai to his harem while knowing she was Abram's wife, he would have to kill Abram first." Scripture states Sari was "very beautiful" and reports of her beauty reached the Pharaoh.
7. Which one forged tools out of bronze and iron, as per Genesis 4:22?

Answer: Tubal-Cain

Tubal-Cain is the correct answer. His father was Lamech and his mother was Zillah. He had a sister named Naamah. Incidentally, Tubal-Cain is the first hyphenated name in the Bible, using the NKJV and the NIV.
8. According to 2 Samuel 11:3, who was the father of Bathsheba?

Answer: Eliam

Eliam is the correct answer but little is known about him as he is mentioned only in passing reference. His only mention appears in 2 Samuel 11:3. There are two men called Eliam in the Old Testament. The other one was the son of Ahitophel and he was a mighty warrior serving in David's army.
9. According to Scripture, Elisha purified Jericho of its bad water by adding a substance to it. What did he add to the water? (2 Kings 2:19-23.)

Answer: Salt

The miracle of Elisha purifying the water is told in 2 Kings 2:19-23.

The passage in the NKJV Bible states: "Then the men of the city said to Elisha, 'Please notice, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the ground barren.' And he said, 'Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.' So they brought it to him. Then he went out to the source of the water, and cast in the salt there, and said, 'Thus says the Lord: 'I have healed this water; from it there shall be no more death or barrenness.' So the water remains healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke."

According to Wikipedia, Jericho is one of the longest continually inhabited cities in the world.
10. Now take the first letter of each answer to come up with the nine-letter name of a river that is mentioned nineteen times in the Old Testament of the NKJV.

Answer: Euphrates

The correct answer is the Euphrates. "The Euphrates is the longest and one of the most historically important rivers of Western Asia," Wikipedia reports. "Together with the Tigris, it is one of the two defining rivers of Mesopotamia."

The river flows through Turkey, Syria and Iraq.

In addition to being mentioned nineteen times in the Old Testament of the NKJV, the river's name appears three times in the New Testament. In all three instances, it is found in Revelation.
