Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What area of the world do most Druze reside in?

Answer: The Levant

The countries with the highest Druze populations are Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, although other countries such as Australia have some Druze population, too. In Syria, they are about 3% of the population and mainly live in a southern region of the country called Jabal al-Druze.
2. In what major city did the Druze religion begin?

Answer: Cairo

It began in 1017 AD during the reign of the sixth Fatimid caliph, Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah. Al-Hakim began the Divine Call to convert to the religion that year, which caused riots in Cairo. Then Hamza ibn Ali ibn Ahmad then began to spread the religion.
3. What is unusual about Muhummad ad-Darazi, who the Druze are named after?

Answer: The Druze consider him a heretic.

He was an early proclaimer of the Druze faith along with Hamza ibn Ali ibn Ahmad. As he gained more adherents, however, he became arrogant and also started to proclaim that Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, the sixth caliph of the Fatimid Caliphate, and his ancestors, were God incarnate. Al-Hakim then put him to death.

The Druze now consider him a heretic, and it was Muslim groups who attached his name to the Druze movement. The Druze call themselves The People of Monotheism.
4. Do the Druze try to win converts?

Answer: No

They do not, as the Divine Call period of proselytization of the religion lasted from 1017 AD to 1043 AD (with two periods of suspension). Now, they do not accept converts. They do not allow leaving the religion, either.
5. The Druze highly revere this Old Testament figure as a prophet, and Israeli Druze make pilgrimages to his tomb on the holiday of Ziyarat al-Nabi Shu'ayb. Who is he?

Answer: Jethro

The Druze identify Nabi Shu'ayb with Jethro, and they believe he is buried in Galilee. April 25th-28th is now an official holiday in Israel for the Druze to visit his tomb. Everyone in the Israeli Druze community gets off from work, school, and other duties.
6. What are the Druze Scriptures called?

Answer: The Epistles of Wisdom

The Druze canon also includes the Bible, the Quran, and works from Socrates, Plato, and other religions. This gives them a very pluralistic attitude towards other faiths, and means they incorporate elements of other religions in their doctrine.

The Epistles of Wisdom are different and number 111 in total. They are written in Arabic and are dated from 1017-1042 AD. They were organized and compiled into six books in 1479 AD.
7. There are seven Druze precepts that are moral principles for their lives. Which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Pacifism

Druze are not pacifists, and many serve in the Israeli Defense Forces.

The other four Druze precepts are renouncing false beliefs, declaring God's unity, accepting God's acts, and submitting to God's will. Fellowship means taking care of and providing for other Druze. This gives the Druze a strong sense of identification with other Druze, no matter where they are in the world.
8. Do the Druze believe in reincarnation?

Answer: Yes

They believe reincarnation happens instantly, because they do not believe a soul can exist without a body. They believe a Druze will always be another Druze in their next life. Their goal is to escape the cycle of reincarnation and unite with the Cosmic Mind. If a Druze can recall their past life they are called a Nateq.
9. Who do the Druze believe will one day return to conquer the world?

Answer: Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah

Al-Hakim disappeared in February 1021 while out on a walk, and it is not known what happened to him. It is likely he was assassinated. The Druze religion teaches he will come back 1,000 years after his disappearance and begin a march from China to Mecca, eventually converting the world to the Druze religion.
10. The Druze use a star with five colors as a symbol. Name one color on the star.

Answer: Green

The star symbolizes the five superior ministers. They believe each of them was represented by a person in the past. Green is al-aql, the mind. Red is an-Nafs, the soul. Yellow is al-kalima, the word. Blue is as-sabiq, the mental power of the will. White is al-tali, the realization of blue in the world.
