Question 1 of 10
1. The list of suspects has been narrowed down to four people - Alexander, Aristotle, Bartemius and Christian.
When he questions them, they tell him that they're ready to give up the name of
the criminal, if Levi can answer their questions correctly.
"We'll each give you a set of three statements," one of them said. "You tell us if we're telling utter lies, half-truths or simply the truth."
"That's not all," said another. "Depending on your answer, we will each provide you with a letter of the alphabet. If you have answered correctly, then the order in which you collect the letters will spell out the criminal's name."
Having understood the instructions Levi proceeded with his interview.

NOTE: Read the statements CAREFULLY. Make sure every fact in the single statement is correct or wrong before labeling it as true or false.

"Lets begin, shall we?" Levi asked.
The four of them shuffled forwards.
"Well sir, I'll go first." Alexander, whose sleek brown hair resembled fresh honey, said stepping forward.

1. Noah was the son of Lamech, whose father was Methuselah.
2. Noah's sons were Shem, Japheth and Ham.
3. Noah cursed Canaan, the son of Ham, with eternal slavery.

2. Joseph was thrown into prison because he succumbed to the passionate advances of Potiphar's wife.
3. According to Joseph's interpretations, the chief baker would be restored to his position, while the royal cup-bearer would be hanged.

Question 3 of 10
3. Bartemius, a burly redhead, looked scornfully at Aristotle. "If you're going to ask such easy questions, you might as well own up to the crime you committed."
Levi looked sharply at them.
"He's bluffing!" Aristotle exclaimed. "Get on with your question, Barty. As it is, we all know who's going to be behind bars. Might as well enjoy your last bit of fun before then."
"Why, you little.."
"Enough!" Levi snapped. "Your question, Bartemius?"
Bartemius huffed irritably before turning to Levi.

1. Gideon was the son of Joash, from the tribe of Manasseh. He was also called Jerub-Baal by the people.
2. Gideon asked for two signs from the Lord as proof that God would guide him against the Midianites. The first time, the fleece of wool and the ground were both wet with dew and the second time, the fleece alone was wet with dew, while the ground was dry.

Levi nodded, though he felt he already had a good idea who the culprit was.
Christian cleared his throat and continued.

1. Job was a righteous, God-fearing man who lived in the land of Uz.
2. In the time after his sufferings, he was blessed with seven sons and three daughters. The names of these seven sons and three daughters do not appear in the Bible.

1. Jonah is first mentioned in the Second Book of Kings and not in the book of Jonah.
2. On first disobeying God's orders, he sails to Tarshish instead of Nineveh.
3. Jonah was in the mouth of the fish 40 days and 40 nights, before he was vomited out on the shore. On God's orders, he prophesies that Nineveh would be destroyed in 3 days if the people did not repent of their evil ways.
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Aristotle stepped forward again, "I think I'll probably get all these statements wrong, you know. My knowledge is quite limited on the subject."
Levi smiled. He wasn't going to be taken in by this attempt to throw him off the track.

1. Sisera was the commander of the army of Jabin, a king of Canaan. He persecuted the Israelites for twenty years.

Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. The four suspects now looked at each other.
"We've each had two turns, who's going to ask the last one?" Christian wondered.
"We'll make Levi choose." Bartemius suggested.
Levi raised a finger and pointed, "You go!"
Christian sighed and stepped forward.

1. Samson was the son of Manoah, from the clan of the Danites.

2. Levi looked at the second man, a wiry be-spectacled blond. One of those geek-types, Levi thought amusedly. "Alright, Ari," Levi said. "what do you have?" Aristotle thought for a while before saying, 1. Joseph was the twelfth son of Jacob and the only son of Rachel. 2. Joseph was thrown into prison because he succumbed to the passionate advances of Potiphar's wife. 3. According to Joseph's interpretations, the chief baker would be restored to his position, while the royal cup-bearer would be hanged.

Answer: All statements are false - L

"What a load of lies Aristotle is telling - either that, or he just hasn't got his facts right." Levi thought to himself.

1. This statement is false. Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob and the first of the two sons of Rachel. Genesis 35:23-25 (New International Version - UK)

2. This statement is false. Joseph refused to sleep with the wife of his master, stating, "With me in charge, he told her, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.
No-one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" Genesis 39 : 8-9

3. This statement is false. The cup-bearer was restored to his position - he had dreamed that he had provided Pharaoh with a cup of freshly squeezed wine from a vine that had three branches.
The baker however was hanged - he had dreamed that birds were eating out of the three baskets of bread and baked goods that he was carrying to the Pharaoh. Genesis 40
3. Bartemius, a burly redhead, looked scornfully at Aristotle. "If you're going to ask such easy questions, you might as well own up to the crime you committed." Levi looked sharply at them. "He's bluffing!" Aristotle exclaimed. "Get on with your question, Barty. As it is, we all know who's going to be behind bars. Might as well enjoy your last bit of fun before then." The first time, the fleece of wool and the ground were both wet with dew and the second time, the fleece alone was wet with dew, while the ground was dry. 3. To choose the men who would fight alongside Gideon, God asked Gideon to retain the men who lapped up the water and send back the ones who got down on their knees to drink water from the lake.

Answer: Two statements are true - E

1. This statement is true. "The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites." Judges 6:11

"But Lord, Gideon asked, how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." Judges 6:15

Gideon doubted his own ability to lead the Israelites against the Midianites.

2. This statement is false. He placed a fleece of wool on the ground and said...
"...If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised?
Look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing-floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said." Judges 6:36-37
The second time, he said again,
"Do not be angry with me. Let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece. This time make the fleece dry and the ground covered with dew." Judges 6:39

3. This statement is true. God helped Gideon choose 300 men by separating them in the manner in which they drank water. Judges 7:4-7
4. The mild-mannered, blue-eyed Christian stepped forward. Levi found it hard to associate this man with the word "criminal", but reminded himself that looks coul be deceiving. Christian closed his eyes for a short moment and then said: 1. Moses was the son of Amram and Jochebed, from the tribe of Levi. He led the Israelites out of Egypt, towards the Promised Land. 2. Aaron was Moses' younger brother, and served as the first High Priest in Israel. 3. Miriam was the eldest of the three. She was later on struck with leprosy when she openly objected to Moses' marriage to a Cushite.

Answer: Two statements are true - X

1. This statement is true. Moses was the third child of Amram and Jochebed. Following Pharaoh's order to kill all new-born boys, Jochebed had hidden him away for three months and later on, she set him adrift on the Nile river in a small craft of bulrushes coated in pitch. Thereafter it was found by the daughter of Pharaoh who then adopted the child as her own. Exodus 2.

2. This statement is false. Aaron was the elder brother of Moses. He later on assisted Moses in his confrontations with the Pharaoh, and further on, on God's instructions was anointed as High Priest along with his sons. Exodus 6:20, 4:14-16, Leviticus 8.

3. This statement is true. Miriam, the prophetess, is the eldest sister. She is known to have composed the Song of Miriam - a victory song that marked the drowning of the Egyptian forces in the Red Sea and a triumph for Israel. She and Aaron, probably out of jealousy, had openly opposed Moses' marriage to the Cushite woman Zipporah, following which she was struck with the disease. Exodus 15, Numbers 12.
5. "Since that's all four of us," Christian said. "I'll go again" Levi nodded, though he felt he already had a good idea who the culprit was. Christian cleared his throat and continued. 1. Job was a righteous, God-fearing man who lived in the land of Uz. 2. In the time after his sufferings, he was blessed with seven sons and three daughters. The names of these seven sons and three daughters do not appear in the Bible. 3. Job's wife was sympathetic to his sufferings and asked him to pray earnestly to God to alleviate their suffering.

Answer: One statement is true - A

1. This statement is true. God was pleased with Job. Satan however insisted that if God were to raise His hand against Job, he would no longer be faithful. However Satan is proved wrong each and every time, even when the magnitude of the suffering increased with each test - starting with the loss of his cattle, property and family and finally ending with Job himself breaking out in boils and sores. Job Chapters 1 - 2.

2. This statement is false. Job did indeed have seven sons and three daughters. But, while the names of the seven sons do not appear, the names of the daughters do appear in the Book of Job.
The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job's daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers. Job 42:14-15.

3. This statement is false. Job's wife is known to have committed blasphemy when she said: "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!" Job 2:9
6. Bartemius cleared his throat.

Answer: Two statements are true - N

1. This statement is indeed true. Jonah is mentioned in 2 Kings 14:25 as a prophet during the reign of the wicked Jeroboam, the Second:
"...in accordance with the word of the LORD, the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher."

2. This statement is true.
But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD. Jonah 1:3

The ship eventually runs into rough weather, and the sailors cast lots to determine the source of the trouble. The lot, of course falls on Jonah, who then suggests he be thrown into the sea to calm the storm. The reluctant sailors finally do so. (Jonah 1:4-17)

3. This statement, though it appears true on the face of it, is actually false. Bartemius has mixed the number of days up.
Jonah was in the fish's mouth for 3 days and 3 nights. And Nineveh was doomed for destruction in 40 days, if they did not repent. Jonah 1:17 and Jonah 3:4
7. Aristotle stepped forward again, "I think I'll probably get all these statements wrong, you know. My knowledge is quite limited on the subject." Levi smiled. He wasn't going to be taken in by this attempt to throw him off the track. 1. Sisera was the commander of the army of Jabin, a king of Canaan. He persecuted the Israelites for twenty years. 2. According to Deborah's prophecy, Barak would not have the honor of taking Sisera's life. The honor would be a woman's - and this woman was Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite. 3. Jael killed Sisera by stabbing him with a coarse knife while he was sleeping in her tent.

Answer: Two statements are true - D

1. The first statement is true.
Following the death of Ehud, the Israelites started doing evil in the sight of the Lord once again. God therefore handed them over to the cruel tyranny of King Jabin and his army commander Sisera. Judges 4:1-3

2. The second statement is true.
When Deborah commands Barak to lead the Israelites against Sisera, Barak agrees but only on the condition that Deborah also went with him. Because of his lack of faith, Deborah then makes the prophecy that the final victory would not be Barak's. Judges 4:6-10

3. This statement is false.
When Sisera takes refuge in Heber the Kenite's tent, Jael sneaks in while he is sleeping and kills him by driving a tent peg through his temple into the ground.
Judges 4:21
8. Alexander looked thoughtful as he contemplated his question. Levi tapped his fingers impatiently, "Just get on with it, Alex!" Alexander frowned a little, before saying: 1. Hadassah is the Hebrew name of Queen Esther, who was the cousin of Mordecai, a Jew from the tribe of Levi. 2. Queen Esther revealed Haman's evil plot during the first feast that she had prepared for King Xerxes and Haman 3. Haman had a gallows, seventy-five feet high, built for Mordecai. He was later hanged on the gallows when King Xerxes learned of his evil plot.

Answer: One statement is true - E

1. The first statement is only partly true. Mordecai is from the Tribe of Benjamin, not Levi. Esther 2:5

2. The statement is false. Esther revealed Haman's plot in the second feast that she prepared for them. Esther 7

3. This statement is true.
"Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said, "A gallows seventy-five feet high stands by Haman's house. He had it made for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king."
The king said, "Hang him on it!"
So they hanged Haman on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king's fury subsided." Esther 7: 9-10
9. The four suspects now looked at each other. "We've each had two turns, who's going to ask the last one?" Christian wondered. "We'll make Levi choose." Bartemius suggested. Levi raised a finger and pointed, "You go!" Christian sighed and stepped forward. 1. Samson was the son of Manoah, from the clan of the Danites. 2. Delilah was a beautiful woman from the Valley of Sorek who had to persuade Samson four times before she finally got him to reveal the secret of his strength. Samson finally revealed his secret during her fourth attempt. 3. Samson had first married a Philistine woman from Timnah, who had also tricked him into revealing an answer to a riddle.

Answer: All statements are True - R

1. This statement is true. Judges 13:2

2. This statement is true.
Delilah was bribed by the Philistines to get Samson to reveal his secret.
The three ways which Samson said were:
- tying him with seven fresh thongs that had not yet been dried
- tying him securely with new ropes that have never been used
- weaving the seven braids of his head into the fabric on the loom and tightening it with the pin
Judges 16 : 4-20

3. The famous riddle that stumped his companions:
"Out of the eater, something to eat;
out of the strong, something sweet."
which was inspired by Samson's earlier fight with a lion, after which he then scooped out honey from the lion's carcass.
Judges 14: 2-8, 14-18
10. "Have you figured out who it is, Levi?" The warden asked stepping into the room. "I believe so," Levi said consulting his notes. He looked at the four men whose expressions varied from nervous to smug. He turned to look at the one with the smug expression, a wry grin breaking out on his face. "You can lose the smug expression. You're under arrest for the robbery of the rare editions of The Holy Bible" He handcuffed...
