Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does it mean when a video goes 'viral' on the internet?

Answer: It has become extremely popular.

'Going viral' means that a video (often a YouTube clip) has been widely disseminated across the internet. The clip has captured public imagination for its quality, humor, quirkiness or in some cases its bizarre nature. The term arises from the analogy to a (pathogenic) virus spreading through a host organism or community.

2. A super moon occurs when the moon is closest to earth, also called perigee. When the moon is at its greatest distance from earth, it's called a micro moon, or is said to be at which of these?

Answer: apogee

Perigee and apogee occur because the moon's orbit around the earth is elliptical. This causes one time in each orbit that the moon is at perigee (closest to the earth), and a different time when the moon is at apogee (furthest from the earth). Bungee is a nylon-enclosed rubber cord, or a sport in which one jumps from a very high point, tethered by a bungee. Congee is a soup or porridge popular in Eastern Asia.

A dragee is a small silver ball used to decorate cakes.

3. What mineral, important in the formation of shells for marine animals, reacts vigorously when applied with hydrochloric acid?

Answer: Calcite

Calcite is a carbonate mineral that will release carbon dioxide gas when applied with hydrochloric acid. This is an important characteristic that geologists use to identify its presence in rocks. Calcite is most often found in sedimentary rocks that form in marine environments from the shells of dead animals.

4. Why do we have eyebrows?

Answer: To keep moisture out of our eyes

The general consensus of the scientists who have done analysis have found that eyebrows exist to keep moisture, such as sweat and rain, out of our eyes. The shape of the eyebrow causes moisture to flow towards the side of the face, thus sparing the eyes. Of course, a side benefit is that we can use them to communicate all sorts of thoughts without words - words can get you in trouble, but eyebrows? Blame it on a twitch!

5. What is the German term for a type of granular snow pellet denser than snow, but still not quite hail?

Answer: graupel

Graupel is defined as granular snow pellets on the Merriam-Webster dictionary website. Graupel can also sometimes be called small hail, but that is not the German term or the technical one. Wienerschnitzel is a breaded cutlet!

6. Why is dark chocolate considered a better antioxidant than milk chocolate?

Answer: It doesn't contain milk

As chocoholics have long suspected, chocolate is good for us! Natural cocoa powder contains a high level of antioxidants, but the more processed it is, the less beneficial it is. In particular, milk has been found to inhibit the absorption of the antioxidants. Even drinking milk with a bar of dark chocolate will decrease the health benefits from the dark chocolate. So have your dark chocolate straight up! For the best health benefits, it is recommended to choose chocolate that has at least 70% cocoa content and that uses cocoa butter instead of oils or milk fats.

7. Which of these glands is an endocrine gland?

Answer: Pancreas

The pancreas lies in the abdomen on the upper left side. Endocrine glands are those that secrete their fluids into the blood. In the case of the pancreas, it secretes insulin and other hormones into the bloodstream. The pancreas is also part of the digestive system, and secretes digestive fluids into the small intestine.

8. Which technology does NOT belong when discussing varieties of flat-panel, high-definition widescreen televisions?

9. Sally noticed a visual problem and saw her ophthalmologist who diagnosed a retinal detachment (RD). Which of these was NOT one of the symptoms?

Answer: Pain

The retina is like film in a camera before cameras had microchips. The most common visual symptoms are flashing lights and floaters (spider webs, bugs, ameobas) which can sometimes precede the detachment for days or weeks. Typically, RDs are without pain except when the case is traumatic and then the pain is from the trauma itself and not the detachment. Traction on the retina from contraction of the vitreous (a clear viscous gel filling the interior of the globe) can create a tear. Contraction of the vitreous body is a normal process as we age but some serious conditions, such as diabetes, trauma, inflammation or autoimmune disorders, are associated with RD. People with large spectacle corrections (near-sightedness), lattice degeneration or even certain ocular neopasms (cancers) are at higher risk than the general population. Seek immediate attention for any of these eye symptoms, as early treatment (laser or surgery) gives the best chance of a good outcome.
