Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Myeloma is a type of which cancer?

Answer: blood

The onset of osteoporosis is one of the indicators of myeloma developing and certainly was in my case.
2. Myeloma develops from cells in the bone marrow called ________ cells?

Answer: plasma

Myeloma attacking the cells in the bone marrow affects the density of the skeleton and a test for this will indicate how badly bone strength has been damaged.
3. The cells that are created in the bone marrow are part of the immune system. If these cells are normal, they make proteins called __________? These are also called immunoglobulins.

Answer: antibodies

The body responds to infections and the plasma cells make antibodies. Different antibodies are made for different infections. They protect us from infections as antibodies attack and help to kill viruses and bacteria.
4. Myeloma develops when there is a change in the _______ of the affected cells?

Answer: DNA

The instruction for the cell, so it knows what to do and when, is from DNA. When the bone marrow is making new plasma cells a change happens to the DNA. More abnormal cells are then produced, called myeloma cells.
5. The myeloma cells produce an abnormal form of one of the types of antibody. What are these antibodies called?

Answer: paraproteins

These antibodies are also known as abnormal proteins, monoclonal proteins, or a monoclonal spike. They aren't able to work normally and so can't help fight infections.
6. If you have myeloma, blood and which other test are a way of diagnosing and monitoring the disease?

Answer: urine

A good way of diagnosing and monitoring myeloma is by blood and urine tests. As well as the whole antibody (immunoglobulin), often a small part called the free light chain (called Bence-Jones in the urine) is also made in large amounts by the myeloma plasma cells.
7. Does myeloma usually form a lump or tumour?

Answer: No

The problems it causes are because of a build up of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow and the paraprotein in the body. It affects areas where you have active bone marrow, including your arms and legs and your shoulders as well as your spine, skull, pelvis and rib cage.
8. All blood cells start as the same type of cell, called by which name?

Answer: Stem

As stem cells develop, they turn into one of three types of blood cell - white blood cells (leucocytes), red blood cells (erythrocytes) and platelets (thrombocytes).
9. Which steroids, that were in the news frequently in 2019/20 as a likely combatant to Covid-19, are also part of the chemotherapy and target drugs for myeloma?

Answer: Dexamethasone

Prednisolone is also used for myeloma but wasn't in the news as a treatment for Covid-19. Methylprednisolone and hydrocortisone are just similar to dexamethasone.
10. There is a fairly new and revolutionary process for myeloma which has been in the news a great deal in the twenty-first century. It is only recommended if the patient is considered fit enough to cope with the nature of its side effects. It is a form of transplant where the donor is the patient. Which option is it?

Answer: Stem cell transplant

Millions of stem cells are collected from the patient in an all day session connected to an incredible centrifugal harvesting machine. It extracts and replaces all the blood in the patient as many as five times to get the stem cells needed for the transplant. I needed five million stem cells for my transplant.

There were 14 million at the end of the day so nine million were frozen in case I need them in the future.
