Sirius is the brightest star when using APPARENT MAGNITUDE. This is different than absolute magnitude. Absolute is how bright the star would be if all stars were situated at the distance of 30 lightyears. Apparent is how bright they appear to {us;} the lower the number, the brighter the star.
