Epstein was hired as GM by co-owner Larry Lucchino in 2002 and is credited with acquiring Curt Schilling, David Ortiz, and Kevin Millar. On October 31st Epstein resigned and left Fenway Park disguised in a gorilla suit (it was Halloween) to avoid reporters.

The gorilla suit was auctioned off to benefit the Jimmy Fund the official charity of the Red Sox. Epstein stayed in contact with the Sox front office and re-signed with the club in January of 2006 when it was announced that Epstein would return as GM with the added title of Vice President.
