Answer: Cam Ward

After witnessing Cam Ward's amazing performance in the 2006 playoffs, Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford saw Martin Gerber as expendable personnel. The aim was for Ward to lead Carolina to the playoffs by with a low goals against average and a save percentage over 0.920%.

In the end, Cam Ward did outperform his previous regular season record, but came nowhere near matching his playoff success. Cam played 60 games with a 30-21-6 record, accompanied by a 2.93 goals against average, 2 shutouts and a 0.897% save average. John Grahame, on the other hand, played 28 games, recording a 10-13-2 record.

One of the main problems that fans have complained of, with regards to the "new NHL" was the schedule. Schedules were oriented towards inter-divisional and conference match-ups. In the second season of the "new NHL", the schedule tried to accommodate more teams.

The Hurricanes played 22 of the 29 other NHL teams. They never had the opportunity to play Chicago, Columbus, St. Louis, Nashville, or Detroit. And that's it. The Hurricanes were the first team since the 1997 New Jersey Devils to not make the playoffs after winning the cup the year before.

The 2006-07 season also marked the first ever time when both Stanley Cup finalists did not make the playoffs the following season.
