Whalers Turned Hurricanes Trivia Quiz

Where are the Hurricanes fans? I'm a Devils fan, but it breaks my heart to see that not every NHL team has their own quiz. Even though I'll always be bitter about the playoff ousting of 2002, I had to build a quiz for you. You're welcome!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the Hartford Whalers become the Carolina Hurricanes?

Answer: 1997

It was May 6, 1997, when the city of Hartford, Connecticut cried, for Peter Karmanos announced that the Whalers were moving to Raleigh, North Carolina. They played the first two seasons in Greensboro, NC, while waiting for their arena to be built, and on October 29, 1999, the Hurricanes hosted my beloved Devils in the home opener at the new Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena, losing 4-2.
2. Who scored the first goal in Carolina Hurricane's history?

Answer: Kevin Dineen

In a road game versus Tampa Bay on October 1, 1997, Kevin Dineen became the first player to score a goal for the Carolina Hurricanes in a 2-4 loss. Ironically, he was the last player to score a goal for the Hartford Whalers (April 13, 1997), and it was also in a game against Tampa Bay, although the Whalers fared better and won 2-1. Nelson Emerson scored the second goal in Hurricanes history.
3. The first win in Hurricanes' history occurred on October 10, 1997, against the beloved New Jersey Devils. Who scored the game winner?

Answer: Steve Leach

Leach scored the go-ahead goal for the 'Canes first win, a 2-1 victory on home ice. Trevor Kidd was the goalie for Carolina that night.
4. On December 29, 1998, the Hurricanes acquired veteran defenseman Paul Coffey from Chicago. Who did they give up for him?

Answer: Nelson Emerson

Emerson was the man the Hurricanes traded for Coffey. Burt would be traded to Philadelphia later in the season (March 6, 1999) for Andrei Kovalenko. Manderville was traded to the Flyers on March 14, 2000, for Sandy McCarthy. Dineen would finish the 1998-99 season in Carolina, but would sign with the Ottawa Senators in the offseason.
5. Which superstar player did the Hurricanes try to acquire by offering an exorbitant amount of money during the 1997-98 season?

Answer: Sergei Fedorov

Fedorov was a hold-out during the 1997-98 season, and Carolina, hoping to draw a crowd to its arena with a prolific scorer, offered a ton of money to the centerman. He signed an offer sheet, but as a restricted free agent, Detroit had seven days to match it or accept five first-round draft picks in compensation.

However, the NHL immediately challenged the validity of the offer and whether it was in violation of the league's collective bargaining agreement. Arbitrator John Sands ruled it was valid, and Detroit immediately matched it, bringing Fedorov back into their lineup and making him a very rich man.
6. On February 5, 2000, Sami Kapanen appeared in his first All-Star game in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. What event did he win during the Superskills Competition?

Answer: Fastest skater

Kapanen completed one rotation around the rink in 13.649, winning the fastest skater competition. He would repeat that feat in 2002 with a little slower, but still fast, 14.039.
7. On April 8, 2000, Paul Maurice became the teams winningest coach with a 4-3 victory against which team?

Answer: Atlanta Thrashers

It was against the Thrashers that Maurice surpassed Jack Evans's total of 163 wins to become the winningest coach. Maurice was coach from November 6, 1995, when he was hired to replace Paul Holmgren, until being replaced by Peter Laviolette on December 15, 2003.
8. Who scored his first career goal in his first career game on March 18, 2003?

Answer: Danian Surma

Each of the above players scored in his first career game that season, but only Surma's goal came on March 18. In fact, a fifth player, Brad DeFauw, scored in his first game as well.
9. On January 2, 2002, Ron Francis scored his 500th NHL goal in his 1000th game for the franchise. Which net-minder did he put the puck past?

Answer: Byron Dafoe

With 6:48 left in the first period, Ronnie "Franchise" slipped one by Byron Dafoe for this milestone goal in a 3-6 loss against the Bruins.
10. For the first time in franchise history, the Hurricanes made it to the Stanley Cup Final in the 2001-02 season. Unfortunately, they only managed one win against the Red Wings, and were swept in four straight games after winning game one. Who scored the only game winner for the Hurricanes in the finals?

Answer: Ron Francis

With just 58 seconds elapsed in overtime, Francis scored the 3-2 game winner against Dominik Hasek on a pass to the top of the crease by Jeff O'Neill. O'Neill was also responsible for the 'Canes' second goal of the night, while Hill had the first.

Now if a Devils fan can create a Hurricanes' quiz, so can a Hurricanes fan!
