Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Carolina Hurricanes played through the 2007-08 season with three goaltenders. Those three goalies were Michael Leighton, Cam Ward, and John Grahame. Which of the three had the heaviest workload?

Answer: Cam Ward

Cam Ward had a much larger workload than any other goalie in the Hurricanes system. Ward played in 69 games for the Hurricanes, recording a 37-25-5 record with four shutouts, a 2.75 GAA, and a 0.904% save average. Back-up goaltender John Grahame played in 17 games recording a 5-7-1 record with a disappointing 3.75 GAA, and an even worse 0.875% save average. Michael Leighton was briefly used as Cam Ward's starter after John Grahame was placed on waivers and Ward began playing sloppy.

In the three games he played, Leighton recorded a 1-1-0 record with a 2.66 goals against average and a 0.897% save average.
2. The regular season saw a heap of injuries mount on the Hurricanes front. These injuries prevented key players from playing their important minutes. In fact, only one player played in all 82 games for the Canes. Who was it?

Answer: Eric Staal

Eric Staal played in all 82 games for the Canes and recorded 82 points (38 goals, 44 assists). Staal played 81 games in his rookie year, then all 82 in 2005-06, and 2006-07. The injury bug hit a large chunk of the Hurricanes' lineup. Among the injured players were Justin Williams, Ray Whitney, David Tanabe, Matt Cullen, Rod Brind'Amour, Dennis Seidenberg, Patrick Eaves, Niclas Wallin, Chad Larose and Scott Walker.
3. Which of the following players did not receive an injury that kept them out of play for at least 20 games?

Answer: Ray Whitney

David Tanabe was one of the first to go down with injury. On December 18, 2007, Tanabe was given a severe concussion. The concussion forced him to miss the remaining 47 games of the regular season. Justin Williams tore an ACL in his knee and was forced to undergo surgery on December 26, 2007.

The surgery kept him out of the line-up for 43 games. He returned for a single game against Washington, but stayed out of the lineup for the remaining games of the season. Hurricanes captain, Rod Brind'Amour, had a similar injury to Williams and underwent surgery.

He missed the last 22 games of the regular season. Other injured players include Ray Whitney(16 games), Matt Cullen(23 games), Scott Walker(22 games), Chad LaRose(24 games), Dennis Seidenberg(35 games), Erik Cole(9 games), Frantisek Kaberle(2 games), Tim Gleason(2 games), Bret Hedican(16 games), Glen Wesley(4 games), and Niclas Wallin(16 games). That makes for a total of 281 man games lost to injury.
4. Who ended up being the points leader for the Hurricanes?

Answer: Eric Staal

Eric Staal was the only on the team to play in all games. He recorded 82 points, to lead the team by more than 20 points. Ray Whitney was second best with 61 points. Glen Wesley had 8 points, Erik Cole had 51 points and Matt Cullen had 49 points.
5. On January 1, 2008, former Calder trophy winner Sergei Samsonov was placed on waivers by the Blackhawks. Having recorded only four points in 11 games, he was deemed expendable. The Hurricanes offered him a chance to play. Which of the following is true about his first season in Carolina?

Answer: He recorded 32 points in 38 games.

After failing to impress Blackhawks management, Samsonov was a gamble for the Hurricanes. It turned out that Samsonov was a very smart gamble. In his 38 games with the Canes, Samsonov recorded 14 goals and 18 assists, to make a total of 32 points. Among his total were two three-point games and six two-point games. As a reward, he was signed to a multi-year contract.
6. At one point during the season, Hurricanes General Manager Jim Rutherford realized something had to be done with his team. On February 11, 2008, a large trade occurred between the Ottawa Senators and the Canes. What was the terms of the trade?

Answer: Cory Stillman and Mike Commodore for Joe Corvo and Patrick Eaves.

After the acquisition of the two Senators players, a big difference was felt in the defensive end. Corvo, who had been quite an overlooked talent in Ottawa shone bright for the Hurricanes. After scoring 27 points in 51 games with Ottawa, Corvo became a hefty point producer for the Canes.

In 23 games with the Hurricanes, Corvo recorded 21 points. Three of those points came on a March 16 hat-trick against his former team. In 11 games with the Canes, Patrick Eaves scored one goal and five assists.
7. Short handed attempts are one of the biggest gambles in a penalized team. When it results in a goal, fans and the team are overjoyed. In 2007-08, the Carolina Hurricanes recorded four shorthanded goals. One player scored two of them. Who was it?

Answer: Scott Walker

The first shorthanded goal occurred on December 26, 2007, against the Rangers. Down 1-0 in the game, Scott Walker scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game. The Hurricanes eventually lost 4-2. The second SH goal of the season occurred two days later, on December 28, 2007. Up 2-1 in the game, Carolina winger Chad Larose fired a shorthanded backhander into the net.

The Canes eventually won 4-3. The third shorthander came on March 14, 2008, against the Sabres. Despite a horrific 7-1 loss, Hurricanes forward Scott Walker scored a lone short-handed goal.

The final short-handed goal came in a converse situation on March 28. Against the Thrashers, Trevor Letowski scored a short handed goal, the sixth goal of the game. The Hurricane eventually defeated the Thrashers 7-1.
8. On October 27, 2007, the Hurricanes had their best offensive output of the season. Defeating the New York Islanders 8-3, captain Rod Brind'Amour recorded his first hat-trick in several seasons. Was that the only hat-trick he scored in the season?

Answer: Yes

His offensive output against the Isles was the only hat-trick he scored during the season. He did record several two-goal games, but he could not record more than one hat-trick. After his season-ending injury on February 14, 2008, his potential for more hat-tricks in the year was halted indefinitely.
9. Did the Hurricanes make the playoffs?

Answer: No

After a strong start to their regular season, the Hurricanes were on the verge of disappointment for months before the final games of the year. Needing one final victory to secure a playoff spot, the Hurricanes stumbled 4-3 against Florida and allowed Washington to overtake them in the division, officially eliminating them from playoff contention.
10. During the 2007-08 offseason, the Hurricanes were very quiet in both the free agent and the trade market. They did, however, make one deal with the Edmonton Oilers. Carolina traded touted forward Erik Cole for a certain defenseman. Who did they trade for?

Answer: Joni Pitkanen

Erik Cole played a total of 418 games for the Hurricanes franchise, recording 280 points. He was traded to the Edmonton Oilers, in exchange for defenseman Joni Pitkanen. In Pitkanen's lone season as an Oiler, he recorded 26 points in 63 games.
