Elena started playing junior tennis in 1995. Her first tournament was the 8th Sochi International Junior tournament where she lost first round.

She played this match at a small ITF tournament in Moscow starting November 5, 1995. She won her first round match against fellow Russian, Nadia Streltsova. She lost in the second round though to another compatriot, Ekaterina Syssoeva. Dementieva was only 13 at the time.
