Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the oldest rookie in the Majors in 1948 at the age of 42?

Answer: Satchel Paige

1948 was well before the others listed began their careers. In 1948, Satchel came as a star from the Negro Leagues. In his rookie season he went 6-1 in 27 games. Paige made his only appearance in the 1948 World Series in game 5 for the Indians, helping Cleveland defeat the Boston Braves four games to two.
2. Which of the following threw over 100 strikeouts in 23 consecutive seasons?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The others listed did not pitch for even 15 seasons. Ryan pitched for 27 seasons in his career. He would have had 25 consecutive, but in 1969 with the Mets he struck out 92. He retired with 5714 career strikeouts and 11 season strikeout titles.
3. Which team played in the 1959 World Series?

Answer: Chicago White Sox

In 1959, the Cubs were still facing an absence in the World Series from 1945, and they did not appear in one for the rest of the century. The White Sox met the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers, led by a pitching staff that would make George Steinbrenner drool, with the likes of Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, Johnny Podres, and Roger Craig, beat the White Sox four games to two.
4. Who was the first player to win a MVP Award in both leagues?

Answer: Frank Robinson

The others listed played their entire career for one team. Frank's first MVP came in 1961 with the Reds. His second was in his stellar season of 1966 with the Orioles, winning the Triple Crown and World Series MVP also. Robinson was an easy Hall of Fame induction in 1982.
5. I set an American League record in 1998-1999 by winning 20 consecutive games. I played for the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees at the time. Who am I?

Answer: Roger Clemens

The others listed never played for Toronto or the Yankees, and never pitched in the American League. In 1998, Clemens went 20-6 with the Blue Jays, winning the Triple Crown and the Cy Young. He continued his streak in 1999 after shaking hands with Yankee owner George Steinbrenner.

He went 14-10 that season but more importantly, continued his winning streak to 20 games. In 2004, Roger left the Yankees (an alleged retirement) and then joined the Houston Astros, earning his seventh Cy Young Award.
6. Who won the National League batting title in 1990 as a St. Louis Cardinal, and played in the World Series for the Oakland Athletics the same season?

Answer: Willie McGee

The others listed never played in the National League, never won a batting title, and retired before 1990. In 1990, McGee was in his ninth season with the Cardinals when he was traded to the A's. Willie qualified in number of at-bats in the National League and won the title batting .335, and topping Eddie Murray of the Dodgers.

In the World Series of 1990, McGee and the Athletics lost to the Reds.
7. Who was the first player in history to hit a grand slam in his first career at-bat in 1898?

Answer: Bill Duggleby

The others did not begin their career for almost thirty years after Duggleby's grand salami. This Philadelphia Phillie was not only a rookie, but also a pitcher. He debuted on April 21, 1898. He retired in 1907.
8. Which team won the 1960 World Series?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The other teams did not exist in 1960. The 1960 World Series posted the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Yankees. It was a historical series as it was won by a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in game seven. Bill Mazeroski hit it, and the Pirates won it.
9. Which 2004 team posted the worst record for the season?

Answer: Arizona Diamondbacks

The others were all Divsion winners. Arizona finished the season with a pitiful 51-111 record. After their 1998 Major League debut, 2004 was their worst season to date. Randy Johnson led the team with 16 wins, but also lost 14.
10. Which of the following pitchers threw more career shutouts?

Answer: Walter Johnson

With the others listed throwing between 61 and 63 career shutouts, Johnson was the easy victor with more than forty more. Johnson of the Washington Senators from 1907-1927, threw 110 scoreboard blanks. Walter won three Triple Crowns in his career, and was inducted into the Hall in 1936, one of the first five inductees.
