Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the final three races of 2001 (Italy, U.S, Japan), who was the first driver on the track to qualify, and what team did he drive for?

Answer: Alonso, Minardi

Alonso drove on to the track as soon as the track opened each of these times. In the U.S. he was the first out and recorded two hot laps before anyone else even rolled out of their garages.
2. Prior to racing at Indianapolis, the U.S. Grand Prix was held in Detroit, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. In Detroit and Phoenix the event was held on a temporary street course surface. What type of venue was the event ran on in Vegas?

Answer: Parking Lot

Yes the event was held in a giant parking lot. Don't ask as to what the FIA was thinking when they allowed this, but it turned out to be one of the ugliest and slowest races of all time.
3. In the late 1980's, 'Leyton House' sponsored a young up and coming team that started showing some serious potential with one of it's drivers. Unfortunatley Leyton House eventually crumbled and its rising star went elsewhere to score success. The cars they fielded were by far the easiest to spot because of their flashy color. This made them the fan's favorite when it came to cheering someone other than Williams or McLaren. What color were the cars and who was that promising driver?

Answer: Teal Green (sea foam, bluegreen, etc), Ivan Capelli

'Leyton House' got to be so popular, they were featured in the American Game Final lap alongside of Williams, McLaren, and Benetton.
4. After winning the World Championship in Formula One, Nigel Mansell went to America to race in CART. After winning both Rookie of the Year and the driver's championship in his first year, he returned to Formula One to drive for McLaren. His bid failed even before his first race, why was this?

Answer: He was too big to fit in the car

Good ol' Nigel was unable to fit in the new McLaren car. The rules had changed drastically since he left so when he returned the wide topped cockpits had been replaced by narrower ones, it seems his shoulders could not fit inside the car, and instead of re-designing the car McLaren started racing little known driver Mika Hakkinen instead.
5. Why are the grooves cut into the tyres?

Answer: To slow the cars down using less grip

FIA decided to mandate them to slow the cars down because of less grip, even though I wouldn't put it past Walkinshaw and Arrows to have come up with it because it looks cool.(Or ugly depending on the person you ask).
6. Four sponsors can be seen predominantly on the cars of Arrows. Which sponsor is missing out of this group. 'Orange', 'Eurobet', 'Chello Broadband'?

Answer: Red Bull

Redbull was featured prominently on two teams last year, Sauber and Arrows. They are the primary sponser of Sauber, and they also sponsor Bernoldi who drives for Arrows.
7. On the rear wing of the Sauber 'Red Bull' Petronas cars, which sponsor is featured when you are looking at it from behind?

Answer: Credit Suisse

'Credit Suisse' currently owns that spot.
8. In Indianapolis this year, the Jordan team did a special paint job on the side pods of Jean Alesi's car. What was on it?

Answer: 200

200- It was to commemorate Jean's 200th Grand Prix.
9. What words replace the title sponsor 'West' on the McLaren cars when they race in countries that do not allow cigarette sponsors.?

Answer: East, David, and Mika

East was what they originally used, it was the opposite of West and any intelligent person could figure that one out. Recently they use the driver's first name.
10. How many combined victories did Bobby Rahal have in Formula One as the Jaguar head man?

Answer: 0

Bobby's only finish, from two starts, was 12th at the US GP East at Watkins Glen in 1978. He was driving for Walter Wolf Racing. He was fired from Jaguar because he didn't even have consistent top 10 finishes.
