Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many races did Brazil's Raul Boesel attempt to compete in?

Answer: 30

Boesel ran for March in 1982 and Ligier in 1983. He made 23 races, scoring a best finish of 7th at the 1983 Long Beach GP. Boesel had more success in CART, Indy, and the World Sportscar Championship, where he won the title in 1987.
2. Giovanni Lavaggi was 37 when he made his Formula One debut.

Answer: True

The Sicilian-born nobleman and mechanical engineer competed for Pacific in 1995 and Minardi in 1996. Lavaggi was described by the BBC's Johnathan Palmer as "desperately slow," but nothing could have been as bad as him being replaced by (you won't believe this) Jean-Denis Deletraz.
3. Onyx was a team with a promising future, but shaky management. Despite the trouble, they had a podium finish in 1989. What driver took third in Portugal?

Answer: Stefan Johannsen

Onyx would become Monteverdi in 1990. Overall, the team had six championship points and 27 DNQs in 52 attempts. Foitek's father actually owned part of the team before he pulled out. The team was plagued by a wrongly-installed differential in a number of races, and parts being used from Peter Monteverdi's collection of cars being used in the team cars.
4. What country was Rikky van Opel from?

Answer: Lichtenstein

Rikky was the great-grandson of Adam Opel, the German whose car beared his name. In 16 races, Ensign (1973-1974) and Brabham (1974), he had two 9th place finishes.
5. Before he was manager to Jos Verstappen, Huub Rothengatter ran Formula One. What was his best career finish?

Answer: 7th

Rothengatter finished 7th at Australia in 1985. He ran 30 races for Spirit (1984), Osella (1985), and Zakspeed (1986).
6. The Gunther Schmid-owned Rial team had one fourth place finish during its two years in F1.

Answer: False

In 1988, Andrea de Cesaris scored a fourth in Detroit. Christian Danner got fourth in Phoenix in 1989. Overall, the team failed to make 28 of its 48 races in 1988 and 1989.
7. How many F1 races did Emanuele Naspettti compete in?

Answer: 6

Naspetti ran for March in 1992 and Jordan in 1993. His career best finish was 11th in the 1992 Portugal GP. He was the 1997 Italian Super Touring champion. Naspetti turned down an offer to be the team's second driver after Theirry Boutsen retired. After Marco Apicella crashed in Italy (his only GP), Naspetti had a disaterous Portuguese GP. He was eventually replaced by Eddie Irvine.
8. Before winning at the 24 Hours of LeMans, France's Yannick Dalmas had a subpar Formula One career, qualifying in 24 of the 49 races he attempted. How many teams did he compete for in his career?

Answer: 2

Dalmas ran for Larousse (1987-1989, 1994) and AGS (1989-1990). Despite placing fifth in the 1987 Australian GP, he was ineligible for points because his car was never registered to run the full season. Dalmas won the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1992, 1994, 1995, and 1999.
9. How many races did Corrado Fabi attempt?

Answer: 18

Fabi ran for Osella in 1983 and Brabham in 1984. He had a career best finish of 7th at Dallas in 1984. Corrado's older brother Teo has a more successful F1 career, with two career third place finishes.
10. What British driver was labeled by "The Times", as "the world's unluckiest racing driver"?

Answer: Perry McCarthy

McCarthy came from a modest background, being born near East London to a working-class family and working in oil rigs to fund his early racing career. McCarthy would later go into Formula One testing for Footwork in 1991. In 1992, he was part of the embarassment known as Andrea Moda, where he failed all eight of his attempts. McCarthy was the target of anger by owner Andrea Sassetti, who was miffed he couldn't get Enrico Bertaggia's sponsorship package (Sassetti used up his allotted number of driver changes during the season). "Pel" would later be a dumping ground for Roberto Moreno's old equipment.

After testing for Benetton in 1992, McCarthy would be known as a motivational speaker, an F3 championship team owner, author of "Flat Out, Flat Broke: Formula One the Hard Way," and "The Stig" on "Top Gear." McCarthy had the shortest Grand Prix debut in F1 history, going just eighteen meters in Spain before his engine expired.

While drivers like Taki Inoue have been criticized for being bad drivers with plenty of money, McCarthy was a good driver with no money.
