Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Arizona (Chicago) Cardinals defeated the...

Answer: Moline Universal Tractors

in 1920, The Chicago Cardinals, who would later make their homes in St. Louis (1960-1987), Phoenix (1988-1993), and Arizona (1994- ), were a part of the APFP (American Professional Football Association), which would later become the National Football League.

The Cards beat the Moline Universal Tractors, 33-0, on October 17, 1920, to get the franchises' very first win and went on to finish the year with a 6-2-2 record.
2. The Atlanta Falcons defeated the...

Answer: New York Giants

After losing their first 10 games, the Atlanta Falcons finally notched their first victory in franchise history when they beat the New York Giants, 27-16, on November 20, 1966. They would come out on top twice more before season's end to finish at 3-11.
3. The Baltimore Ravens defeated the...

Answer: Oakland Raiders

Everyone knows how the Baltimore Ravens came into existence, how they were formerly the Cleveland Browns until their late owner, Art Modell, moved the franchise at the end of the 1995 NFL season from Ohio to Maryland. While the team's first season in Baltimore resulted in a 4-12 finish, the Ravens did provide their new fan-base with a glimpse of things to come as they won their first ever game right out of the gate beating the Oakland Raiders, 19-14, on September 1, 1996. Four years later, at the end of the 2000 NFL season, the Ravens would bring the Lombardi trophy back to Baltimore when they defeated the New York Giants, 34-7, in Super Bowl XXXV.
4. The Buffalo Bills defeated the...

Answer: Boston Patriots

From 1963-1966, the Buffalo Bills were a powerhouse in the American Football League, winning back-to-back championships in 1964 and 1965. They were one of the original eight teams to create the AFL and it all began for them on September 23, 1960, when they shutout the Boston Patriots, 13-0. Buffalo finished that season 5-8-1.
5. The Carolina Panthers defeated the...

Answer: New York Jets

One of the most successful expansion franchises in NFL history, The Carolina Panthers, joined the league in 1995 and went 7-9. Their first win came against the New York Jets on October 15, 26-15. Just one season later, after posting a 12-4 record, the team appeared in the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers, losing to them, 30-13.
6. The Chicago Bears (Decatur Staleys) defeated the...

Answer: Moline Universal Tractors

The Decatur Staleys joined the American Professional Football Association, in 1920, won their first five contests (and nine of their first 10, with a tie mixed in for good measure), and only lost once, finishing the season at 10-1-2. The second tie coming in the league's championship game, a 0-0 finish versus the Chicago Cardinals. The Staleys came back the next year (now called the Chicago Staleys) and finished with a 9-1-1 record, as well as taking their first league title, this time beating the Cardinals, 28-14.

In 1922, the Chicago Staleys became the Chicago Bears and defeated the Racine Legion, 6-0 for their first win as the Bears; they finished that season with a record of 9-3. The Bears would not win their next league title until 1932, when the would beat the Portsmouth Spartans (who would later become the Detroit Lions), 9-0, after posting a 7-1-6 record.
7. The Cleveland Browns defeated the...

Answer: Miami Seahawks

An original member of the old All-American Football Conference (AAFC) from 1946-1949, the Cleveland Browns recorded their first franchise win on September 6, 1946 over the Miami Seahawks, 44-0. The Browns were a juggernaut within the AAFC as they not only appeared in every championship game the league had, but winning every one, too; however, with future Hall of Famers such as Marion Motley and Otto Graham, as well as future Hall of Fame head coach, Paul Brown, one could easily see how they could accomplish such a feat.

When the league went defunct after the 1949 season, the Browns were absorbed into the National Football League where they continued their domination. Coach Brown's team appeared in every championship game except for 1956, 1958 and 1959, winning titles in 1950, 1954, and 1955. The team would win another title, in 1964, under new head coach Blanton Collier, blanking the Baltimore Colts, 27-0.

After making another championship game appearance the following year (a loss to the Green Packers, 23-12), the Browns would have middling success over the next three decades. Then came 1995. That year, owner Art Modell would move the franchise to Maryland and change the name to the Baltimore Ravens; Clevelanders would receive a new Browns franchise to cheer for, in 1999. Adding insult to injury, the Ravens would win Super Bowl XXXV, 34-7, over the New York Giants after the 2000 season. A title that many in Cleveland believes should have been theirs.
8. The Cincinnati Bengals defeated the...

Answer: Denver Broncos

On September 6, 1968, the Cincinnati Bengals made their American Football League debut, a 29-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers. The following week Cincinnati won their very first game when they beat the Denver Broncos, 24-10.

In 1970, the AFL merged with the National Football League and the Bengals surprised the whole league as they won their first Central Division title after starting the season 1-6; they finished the season at 8-6. In the playoffs, the team was shut out, 17-0, by the Baltimore Colts, who went on to become the eventual Super Bowl V winners.

Cincinnati's early success could be attributed to a familiar face, Paul Brown, the former head coach of the Cleveland Browns. The Bengals were his creation and Brown was not just the head coach, but the owner, also. He would remain as the the head coach until the end of the 1975 season, which ended with the Bengals making the playoffs with an 11-3, but losing to the Oakland Raiders in the Divisional Round, 31-28. Brown would continue as owner of the team until 1990. He passed away in August, 1991. Paul Brown's Cincinnati Bengals are considered as one of the most successful expansion teams in NFL history.
9. The Dallas Cowboys defeated the...

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most successful and recognizable franchises, not just in professional football, but in ALL of team sports. Their names read like a "Who's Who" of football royalty: Landry, Staubach, Dorsett, Aikman, Smith, Irvin, Lilly, Randy White, Jimmy Johnson, the list is endless. They've had multiple winning seasons, won countless Division titles, as well as a string of Lombardi Trophies; they are success personified...but it wasn't always that way.

The Cowboys made their NFL debut on September 24, 1960, and promptly lost every game that season except one, a 31-31 tie with the New York Giants in the next to last game of that season, finishing 0-11-1. In the first game of the 1961 campaign, the Cowboys finally broke through for the franchises' first win when they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-24.

Dallas did not post a non-losing season until 1965, when they went 7-7...and then it happened. The Cowboys would not have another losing season until 1986, when they would go 7-9. In between that time, the 'Pokes made the playoffs 18 times and captured two Lombardi trophies out of five Super Bowl appearances.

1986-1990 were lean years for the Cowboys as they experienced five years of futility, the absolute lowpoint coming in 1989, when the team went 1-15. However a case could be made that 1988 was worse as the only coach the team had ever known, Tom Landry, was fired in one of the saddest splits in sports history. New owner, Jerry Jones, was determined to shake things up and he did in a big way; out went Landry and in came Jimmy Johnson, a former Arkansas Razorback teammate of Jones's and former National title-winning coach of the Miami Hurricanes. It took Johnson three seasons to turn the franchise around. In 1991, the team posted an 11-5 record and won a playoff game versus the Chicago Bears before losing in the Divisional Round to the Detroit Lions, 38-6. Dallas would go on to win back-to back Super Bowl titles after the 1992 and 1993 seasons and grab one more after the 1995 season with new coach Barry Swtizer.
10. The Denver Broncos defeated the...

Answer: Boston Patriots

The Denver Broncos were one of the 10 original members of the old American Football League (AFL), debuting in 1960 and they notched their first franchises' win on their initial outing defeating the Boston Patriots, 13-10. While the team posted a non-losing season in 1963 with a 7-7, Denver did not have a winning campaign until 1973, when they finished the season 7-5-2. Four years later, the team rode their "Orange Crush" defense to a 12-2 record, a conference title, and an appearance in Super Bowl XXII against the Dallas Cowboys where their magical season came to an end after a ugly, 27-10 loss.

The Broncos would continue to have successful seasons throughout the next four decades, making Super Bowl appearances after the 1986, '87, '89, '97, '98, 2013, and 2015 seasons, winning three titles within that span (1997, 1998, and 2015) as well as featuring some of the NFL's most notable players such as John Elway, Terrell Davis, and Peyton Manning.
