Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the event in which you swing a ball on a chain around and then hurl it out into the field?

Answer: Hammer Throw

The name "hammer throw" derived from earlier competitions in which a hammer like implement was thrown. The event uses a ball weighing approximately 7kgs for men and just 4kgs for women.
2. Over how long does a race have to be to be classified as an ultra-marathon?

Answer: 42.195km

Many two main types of ultramarathons are run. The most common is a race over a set length. The winner is the one with the quickest time. Another is where a certain time is set and the winner is the one with the furthest distance covered at that time. Some other ultra-marathons are multi-day races, the 24 hour race, and the double ultra-marathon.
3. In the outdoor women's heptathlon, which of the following events is not contested?

Answer: Discus

Even though discus is a commonly contested event, it does not appear in the women's heptathlon.
4. What does the second letter in the acronym "IAAF" stand for.

Answer: Associations

The whole acronym is The International Association of Athletics Federations.
5. In what event is the "Hitch-Kick" an internationally recognised method?

Answer: Long Jump

When the hitch-kick method is perfomed correctly, the athlete cycles their arms and legs around quickly to get a slight push off the air.
6. What is the female equivalent of the men's 110m hurdles?

Answer: 100m

Women run 10m less than the men.
7. How many hurdles races are there?

Answer: 4

They seem to like the number four in track and field. There are four jumping events, four throwing events, four sprint events, four middle distance events and four hurdle lengths. The lengths are 60m, 100m, 110m and 400m.
8. Why was the javelin redesigned in 1984?

Answer: The throws were getting too big

The biggest throwers were getting over 100m so if they kept getting bigger, the event would no longer be able to be held in the stadium which had a javelin throw area of only just over 100m. The javelin was changed so the centre of gravity forced the tip down earlier, resulting in a 10% decrease in the distance.
9. What event do members of the "6 metre club" specialise in?

Answer: Pole Vault

Not many more than 10 men have reached the "six metre club". The women's world record for pole vault in 2007 was a mere 5.01m.
10. The women's discus weighs 1kg. What does the men's discuss weigh?

Answer: 2kg

The men's discus is double the weight of the women's, explaining why the women's world record is further than the men's by a few meters.
