Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in Quebec was Jean Beliveau born?

Answer: Trois-Rivieres

Jean Beliveau was born on August 31, 1931 in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada.
2. For what NHL ice hockey team did Jean Beliveau play his entire professional career?

Answer: Montreal Canadiens

"Gros Bill" played 19 professional seasons for the Montreal Canadiens. When he retired at the end of the 1971 season, he lead the team in career points, Stanley Cups rings and was their longest serving Captain. During his last season, he lead the team in both regular season and playoff scoring and won the Stanley Cup.

He retired at the top, with class, just at the right time. He continued to work in their front office as an ambassador and vice-president for many years after that.
3. How many times did Jean Beliveau have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup?

Answer: 17

Jean Beliveau won ten Stanley Cups as a "Habs" player, and seven more as a member of the Canadiens' upper management, truly a mind boggling feat that will never be equaled in NHL history, and maybe not in the history of professional sport.
4. What jersey number did Jean Beliveau wear for his career with the Monteal Canadiens?

Answer: 4

Jean Beliveau's number 4 was retired by the "Habs" on October 9, 1971 and he was inducted into the hockey Hall of Fame the following year. When Guy Lafleur joined the Montreal Canadiens in 1971-72, he had asked Beliveau if he could wear his retired number 4, to honour Beliveau, who had been Lafleur's childhood idol. Beliveau advised Lafleur against it by telling him that he should wear a different number, find his own destiny, otherwise he would always be identified as the other number 4. Wise words from a very wise man, as Lafleur would go on to surpass Beliveau's point totals with the team, have his own number retired and become a member of the Hall of Fame.
5. What notable civic achievements did Jean Beliveau obtain during his lifetime, outside of ice hockey, as a testament to his community involvement, his dignified demeanour and notoriety within Canadian public?

Answer: Nominated to be the Governor-General of Canada

In 1994, Jean Beliveau was offered the position of Governor-General of Canada, but declined citing that he would prefer to continue with his charity work in the community and spend time with his family, tending to his daughter, whose husband had previously committed suicide.

In Canada the Governor General is the representative of the reigning monarch of England; the the Head of State and the Commander in Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces.
6. What was the most number of goals Jean Beliveau ever recored during a single NHL ice hockey season?

Answer: 47

Although he never got the illustrious 50, Beliveau scored 47 during the 1955-56 season and had notched 507 career goals by the time he retired in 1971.
7. Which NHL Hall of Famer, and 11 time Stanley Cup winner, received a dressing down by Beliveau in the team dressing room during the Stanley Cups finals against the Chicago Black Hawks in 1971?

Answer: Henri Richard

"That's Enough!" During a very hard fought final series, on a team that featured many future Hall of Famers, with Hall Fame sized egos, the decision to bench Henri Richard by a first year head coach (Al MacNeil), did not sit well with the veteran Richard, who threw a tantrum in the team's dressing room lashing out at his inexperience and lack of judgement. Beliveau, the team captain, simply tugged on Richard's jersey, when Richard turned around and saw that it was Beliveau, he stopped immediately, did not say another word during the rest of the series about the coach, and the "Habs" went on to win the Cup, with Richard eventually scoring the cup tying and clinching goals. Easily, one of the top ten greatest moments in all of professional sport.

The poise, the presence of the man was truly legendary.
8. In how many All-Star games did Beliveau participate in as a player during his professional ice hockey career?

Answer: 14

Jean Beliveau played in the NHL's annual all-star game a total of 14 times, from 1953 to 1969 inlcusive (except 1961, 1962, 1966 and 1967).
9. Jean Beliveau the first-ever player to win which NHL annual trophy?

Answer: Conn-Smythe (Playoff MVP)

The Montreal Canadiens won the 1964-65 Stanley Cup playoffs and Beliveau became the first NHL player to receive the Conn-Smythe trophy, awarded to the most valuable player during the playoffs. He had also won the Hart and Art Ross, but was the first ever playoff MVP.
