Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On June 14, 1952, Hank signed on as a free-agent with the Boston Braves. He played his first Major League game on April 13, 1954, with the Milwaukee Braves. How many home runs did he hit in his first season?

Answer: 13

Aaron played in 122 of the 154 games in the season. He hit .280 and was fourth for the Rookie of the Year award behind the Cardinals' Wally Moon, the Cubs' Ernie Banks, and teammate Gene Conley.
2. How many seasons did it take for Hank to win a home run crown?

Answer: 4

His first season was in 1954, then he smacked a NL league-leading 44 in 1957. He also batted .322 in the season, all good enough to win the NL MVP. He helped the Braves to their first World Series title since 1914. Aaron won his MVP over Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst, and Willie Mays. It was the only MVP of his career.
3. Mr. Aaron played six different positions throughout his career. He won three Gold Glove awards at which position?

Answer: Right Field

He played all the outfield positions in addition to first, second, and third base in his career. He won his three Gold Gloves in consecutive seasons from 1958-1960.
4. Hank had a younger brother who also played in the Major Leagues, and played his entire seven-season career with the Braves. What is Henry's younger brother's name?

Answer: Tommie

Tommie was five years younger than big brother Hank. He played all his MLB with the Braves from 1962-1971. He had a lot of pressure placed on him because fans were trying to compare him to his brother. Tommie hit only 13 home runs in his seven seasons. He died in 1984, just 11 days after his 45th birthday.
5. One of the greatest feats that Hank performed in his career was that of breaking Babe Ruth's career home run record of 714. What year did Aaron hit his 715th home run to stand by himself?

Answer: 1974

On April 8, 1974, Hank entered immortality when he tied Ruth's record on opening day off pitcher Jack Billingham of the Reds. Two days later he stood by himself, after hitting number 715 off Dodger pitcher Al Downing. It was more than an amazing feat with Aaron having to put up with death threats and all the racism that he did after the 1973 season, sitting on number 713.

He retired with 755 home runs in 1976.
6. What jersey number did Aaron wear throughout his career?

Answer: 44

It was ironic that even with 755 home runs, Hank never hit 50 in a season. He hit his career high of 47 in 1971, and also hit 45 in 1962. He hit his jersey number of 44 four times in 1957, 1963, 1966, and 1969.
7. The Braves moved from Milwaukee after the 1965 season, to the new Fulton-County Stadium in Atlanta in 1966. Although Hank hit 44 home runs in the season, he also set which personal season record?

Answer: He struck out 96 times

After that, Hank broke his own personal record in 1967 by striking out 97 times. He was still eighth for the MVP balloting in 1966, and fifth in 1967.
8. After 21 loyal seasons with the Braves, Hank moved to another team. How was the move made, and with which team?

Answer: The Braves traded him to the Brewers

It shocked Major League baseball and Braves fans to see that the franchise's head office dealt him away. Hank hit his final 22 home runs of his career in two seasons with the Brewers, and retired in 1976.
9. Aaron was inducted into the Hall of Fame along with another 500-home run slugger. Which year were they inducted?

Answer: 1982

Hank was inducted along with the great Frank Robinson in 1982. Robinson played most of his career with the Reds and Orioles. He hit 586 career home runs, but was shadowed by Aaron's 755, and Willie Mays' 660. They were both inducted in their first year of eligibilty.
10. Hank Aaron retired as a member of the 700 Home Run Club. Which other club was he a member of?

Answer: 3000 Hit Club

Aaron retired with 3771 career hits. He fell short in all the other categories. He appeared in 3298 games, had 2297 career RBIs, and struck out 1383 times. When he retired in 1976, he was number two with career hits behind the great Ty Cobb, but both had been passed since via Pete Rose.
