Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yao Ming was the number one draft pick in the 2002 draft. Who went second overall?

Answer: Jay Williams

The others were second round picks in 2002. Williams was drafted from Duke with the overall second pick by the Chicago Bulls.
2. Before becoming the Houston Rockets, where did the team play?

Answer: San Diego

The San Diego Rockets existed from 1967-1970. In the team's inaugural season, they played their first draft pick out of Kentucky, Pat Riley. Their fans would have to wait until the '76-'77 season before they saw the franchise finish with a winning record.
3. Who was the Coach of the Year in the 1967-68 season for his efforts with the Hawks?

Answer: Richie Guerin

Guerin's job was not difficult with the St. Louis Hawks with their record of 56-26. The Hawks rostered some greats such as Zelmo Beaty, Lou Hudson, Don Ohl, Lenny Wilkens, and Paul Silas. The following season the team moved to Atlanta.
4. The NBA MVP Award first began for the 1955-56 season. Who won this inaugural award?

Answer: Bob Pettit

The others never won the NBA MVP. The St. Louis Hawks' star from LSU played for 11 seasons. He would also win the MVP in 1958-59. He retired in 1965, and was later inducted into the Hall of Fame.
5. Sidney Wicks played for 10 seasons with Portland, Boston, and San Diego. In his first six seasons, Wicks' averaged over 20 points per game. Which college did he attend?

Answer: UCLA

Wicks came from two era's with the Bruins. Closing out one with Lew Alcindor, and beginning a new one with Bill Walton. Sidney retired from the NBA in 1981.
6. Which NBA player scored the most points in all the 1990s?

Answer: Karl Malone

Malone was the only player in the 1990s to reach the 20,000 point plateau, more than 5000 greater than runner-up Glen Rice, and 7000 more than the others listed. Karl also ranked fifth in the personal fouls department for the decade with over 2300 whistles.
7. Which of the following rookies of the year, won the award as a Laker?

Answer: Elgin Baylor

Baylor won it in the 1958-59 season as a Minneapolis Laker, two seasons before the team moved to Los Angeles. Baylor spent all 14 seasons wearing the number 22 as a Laker, and retired in 1972. Elgin was a Hall of Fame inductee. Wilkes won the award in '74-'75 as a Warrior, Wilt won in the '59-'60 season with the Philadelphia Warriors, and Kareem with the Bucks in the 1969-70 season.
8. Which of the following retired with a career scoring average of over 30 points per game?

Answer: Wilt Chamberlain

The others listed retired with less than 25 ppg. Wilt 'The Stilt' was the only player to retire with this stat until a player named Michael Jordan came around. They both retired with a 30.1 average, with Jordan playing 15 seasons, and Wilt in 14.
9. I was born in Melbourne, Australia. I was schooled at Scotch College in Perth. After playing for New Mexico, I was the Timberwolves' first pick in the 1991 draft. I retired after playing in 10 NBA seasons with Minnesota, Chicago, Phoenix, and New York. Who am I?

Answer: Luc Longley

Longley's career did not blossom unti the '93-'94 season with the Bulls, and his stats peaked in the '97-'98 season before being traded to Phoenix. He retired in 2001 representing his country well.
10. So much talk about Wilt Chamberlain scoring 100 points in a game on March 2, 1962. Who did his Philadelphia Warriors defeat in that game, 169-147?

Answer: New York Knicks

At the time of the game, Chamberlain had already averaged 50.2 points per game, and this certainly did not hurt his totals. The Warriors also had Paul Arizin who averaged over 20 ppg, and rookie Tom Meschery. Ironically, it would be Chamberlain who later went to the Lakers, and would find himself fighting with Meschery of the Warriors during many games.

It would usually be Meschery who started the issues.
