Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Born in Cardiff in 1963, I made my debut in 1981 whilst still at school. I gained 3 England caps, before equalling a county record in my last match for Glamorgan in 1997.

Answer: Hugh Morris

Hugh Morris scored 19,785 first class runs, including 52 centuries for Glamorgan - the last of these in his final game for the County, which equalled Alan Jones' record (of 52 centuries for Glamorgan).
2. Born in Port Eynon in 1927, I hit a 50 in 15 minutes against a touring team in 1961, one of the 5 times I passed the half century mark in my career. I played over 600 games for Glamorgan.

Answer: Don Shepherd

Don Shepherd was, of course, much better known as a bowler, taking 2,218 wickets in a first class career which spanned 23 seasons. One of the 5 Wisden Cricketer's of the Year in 1970, "Shep" somewhat surprisingly never earned a Test Cap for England.
3. Born in Neath in 1960, I took 456 wickets in 212 first class matches, but achieved my highest ever score in a one-day match, when I finished unbeaten just short of a batting landmark, a half century.

Answer: Steve Barwick

In his latter years, Steve Barwick became known as more of a one day specialist bowler, playing a key part in the Sunday League triumph of 1993. Released from the staff in 1996, he went on to play for the Wales Minor Counties team until 2001. His highest ever score was 48 not out !
4. Born in Cardiff in 1965, I scored almost 3000 runs, as well as taking 70 wickets in my 67 first class matches. However, more than half of these runs, and the vast majority of the wickets, were achieved in South Africa.

Answer: Michael Cann

Michael Cann's opportunities for Glamorgan were limited, and he left the county in 1991, going on to enjoy considerable success in South Africa, before leaving the game at a relatively early age to become a prominent businessman.
5. Born in Croydon, I scored 34 runs in total for England before enjoying a swansong with Glamorgan.

Answer: Alan Butcher

Despite being a consistent performer for many years as an opening batsman with Surrey, Alan Butcher only gained a solitary Test cap, against India at his home pitch, The Oval, in 1979. He moved to Glamorgan in 1987, taking over as captain in 1989, retiring in 1992 to become a coach with Essex.
6. I played in 87 Tests for Pakistan, smoting 16 sixes. I helped Glamorgan to a County Championship title, though they weren't the only County side I played for.

Answer: Waqar Younis

Despite his big hitting abilities, Waqar was mainly known for his fast bowling, taking 373 wickets in his Test career for Pakistan. He joined Glamorgan in 1997, helping to them to only their third County Championship title in that season (their first two were in 1948 and 1969).
7. I kept wicket for Glamorgan in two famous victories over touring teams in the 1960s. I also scored 3 hundreds and 25 half centuries for Glamorgan during my career.

Answer: Eifion Jones

Eifion Jones initially joined the Glamorgan staff in the early 1960s as a specialist right-handed batsman. He developed his skills as a wicket-keeper, and he subsequently became the club's regular gloveman from 1968 until 1982. He kept wicket in Glamorgan's victories against the touring Australians in both 1964 and 1968.

During his career he took a club record of 933 dismissals, but like his older brother Alan, Eifion narrowly missed out on selection for an England test match throughout his career.
8. Born in Abergavenny, I made my Glamorgan debut in 1997, scoring my maiden Championship century the following season at Northamtonshire.

Answer: Mike Powell

Mike Powell made his first-class debut in early June against Oxford University, and made an unbeaten 200* to become only the third Briton in the 20th century to score a double-hundred on first-class debut. His 200* was also the highest ever score on debut for Glamorgan, beating the 138* which Frank Pinch, a Cornish-born schoolmaster made on his Championship debut for Glamorgan at Swansea in 1921. At 20 years and 95 days old, he also became Glamorgan's youngest ever double centurion.

Highest scores on debut by a Briton during the 20th century are:
Hubert Doggart 215* Cambridge University v Lancashire, in 1948.
David Sales 210* Northamptonshire v Worcestershire, in 1996.
9. Born in Swansea, I first played for Glamorgan in 1986 after a brief, but quite successful career as a professional footballer.

Answer: Tony Cottey

A determined middle order batsman and a more than useful off-spinner, Tony Cottey made his Glamorgan debut in 1986, rejecting a career in football with Swansea City in the process. He soon established himself in the Glamorgan side, winning his county cap in 1992, and in 1995 amassing 1465 runs.

In 1996 he was appointed the county's vice-captain, and he responded with 1543 runs and a career best 203 against Leicestershire at Swansea. In 1998 he rejected a new two-year contract with Glamorgan, and joined Sussex on a five-year deal.
10. I once hit 3 sixes in a World Cup Final - where I managed to collect a winner's medal - one step better than I managed with Glamorgan.

Answer: Collis King

Collis King was a big hitting batsman who played for Glamorgan in their Gillette Cup Final loss to Middlesex at Lord's in 1977 - before returning there two years later with the West Indies when they beat England to win the World Cup.
