In the 1890s the game of rugby split in the north of England over the issue of professionalism. The professionals formed the Northern Union (later Rugby Football League) and the game of rugby became known as Rugby Union. The game of rugby league is also known as 'the toughest sport on earth'.

People outside of America call it that! American Football is a distinct type of football that developed in the USA in the 19th century from soccer (association football) and rugby football. The field is 100 yards long, and at both ends white lines called goal lines mark off the entrances to the end zones. Each team defends one end zone.

A team must carry, pass, or kick the ball into the 10-yard end zone on the opponents' half of the field to score. Lines parallel to the end zones cross the field at 5 yard intervals.

These lines give the field a resemblance to a large gridiron, hence .. gridiron! The Canadian Football code is a variation of American Football.
