Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first match kicked off at 8 p.m. GMT in Paris, with France against Wales. Who sang the Welsh National anthem, dressed in a jacket resembling the Welsh flag, complete with dragon?

Answer: Bryn Terfel

Playing on a Friday night meant that the Welsh fans would have had to take a day off work to see the match, and was solely for the benefit of television. To add insult to injury, BBC2's coverage did not join the crowd at Stade Francais until half way through the Welsh national anthem, sung by tenor Bryn Terfel.

But the Welsh were three points up after three minutes, so that must have cheered them up. Of the wrong answers, soprano Charlotte Church was Rugby player Gavin Henson's lady and mother of his children, Russell Watson was another tenor and Mario Lanza a deceased opera singer (a tenor).
2. After a frenetic first 23 minutes in the France v Wales match, with the score standing at 6-3 to Wales, who scored the first try?

Answer: Lee Byrne - Wales

After a Welsh line-out, Tom Shanklin (who was lucky to still be on the field after taking Imanol Harinordoquy out in the air) broke over the game line, slipping through an attempted tackle by fly-half Benoit Baby before getting rid of the ball, which was passed out to Lee Byrne to scamper over for the try. Stephen Jones converted, giving the Welsh a ten point lead.
3. Neither team was leading at the end of the first half between France and Wales.

Answer: True

After 39 minutes, Wales missed their first tackle of the game, an amazing feat. Unfortunately, that single missed tackle led to a try by Thierry Dusautoir, that was converted by Morgan Parra to send the teams in at half-time at 13 points apiece. At this stage the game was finely poised.
4. The first score after halftime was a great try by Cedric Heymans for France. Wales made an immediate response to falling behind (by eighteen points to thirteen) for the first time by substituting three players, Mike Phillips, Matthew Rees and Jamie Roberts. Who, wearing number 22, made his first appearance on the field for Wales in this Six Nations series?

Answer: Gavin Henson

Gavin Henson, the perma-tanned partner of Charlotte Church, made his return to the team to partner Tom Shanklin in the place of Jamie Roberts. Dwayne Peel took over at scrum-half for Mike Phillips and Huw Bennett replaced Matthew Rees at hooker. Romain Millo-Chluski replaced the awesome Sebastian Chabal for France.

Unfortunately, the next score was another three points for France from the boot of Morgan Parra. Was this the end of Wales' Grand Slam?
5. James Hook scored three points to bring Wales within five points of France with less than five minutes to go. A line-out on the French line, massive tension. What happened?

Answer: The ball went long, James Hook knocked on and the ball was cleared by France for victory.

A converted try would have given the Welsh victory, but it was not to be. Just before the line-out, Gavin Henson, with numbers outside, had chosen to go it alone. He was brought down and the ball finished in French hands after a turnover. The Six Nations was wide open and only Ireland could win the Grand Slam at this point.
6. The second match kicked off at the more traditional hour of three o'clock GMT on Saturday. Scotland against Italy, with both of them fighting to avoid the wooden spoon. The first points were scored by the prolific Chris Paterson after fortuitously coming on as a blood replacement for Phil Godman. So, with the score 6-0 to Scotland, after twenty minutes Alessandro Zanni intercepted a Hugo Southwell pass and raced towards the tryline. What was the outcome?

Answer: A drop goal from Sergio Parisse

After a seriously turgid 20 minutes, Alessandro Zanni streaked away after intercepting Southwell's pass, but was brought down short. Luckily the ball was recycled and Italian captain Parisse struck a beautiful drop goal.
7. Who scored the first try in the Scotland versus Italy game?

Answer: Danielli for Scotland

Despite their names, Luke McLean played for Italy and Simon Danielli played for Scotland. Danielli was born in Scotland but has Italian ancestors and Luke McLean is an Australian ex-pat. A smart pass from Graeme Morrison sent Danielli scampering over for his first Scotland try in over four years. Scotland finished 16-3 up at halftime.
8. Who scored the second try in the Scotland versus Italy match?

Answer: Scott Gray - Scotland

Danielli, during a Man of the Match performance, slipped the ball to Thom Evans, who made an impressive run through the Italian defence before passing the ball to Scott Gray (who had replaced John Barclay after 56 minutes) to go over for Scotland's second try.
9. Who scored the most points for Scotland during the match against France, and did they start the game?

Answer: Chris Paterson - no

Phil Godman started the match but, during his absence for a blood injury, Chris Paterson came on and kicked six points in six minutes. On 47 minutes, Paterson replaced Hugo Southwell and added another penalty and a conversion for a total of eleven points. Godman scored a penalty and a conversion for a five point total.
10. Parisse, in the last four minutes of the match between Scotland and Italy, flicked the ball to Mauro Bergamsco, putting him into space. Did Bergamasco's neat chip result in a try?

Answer: No

The cruelty of the bounce denied Bergamasco what would have been a well deserved try for the visitors. Scotland ran in winners with a slightly flattering score of 26-6.
11. The final match of the third Six Nations weekend was Ireland against England at Croke Park. The game started more like a tennis match as both teams kicked and the ball went from end to end with nothing else really happening. It took 27 minutes for either team to trouble the scorers. Who and what?

Answer: Ronan O'Gara - penalty - Ireland

Following an English infringement at the breakdown, the normally reliable Ronan O'Gara finally managed to score three points at the third time of asking.
12. Ireland and England finished the first half of their game with a score of three points each. Who scored England's solitary penalty?

Answer: Toby Flood

England were awarded a penalty under the posts, which Toby Flood, one of the huge number of fly-halfs that England have been playing since the loss of Jonny Wilkinson to injury, slotted over. Both teams had three points at halftime.
13. England had two players sin-binned in each of the two Six Nations matches before this one. Team coach Martin Johnson had complained about England's treatment by referees and promised more discipline in this match. How many England players received yellow cards in the match against Ireland?

Answer: 2

The England prop Phil Vickery was the first to go for indiscipline and Danny Care was also sin-binned after a late tackle with the shoulder. Some of the more amusing moments of the TV coverage were when the cameras cut to the England coach, Martin Johnson, in the stands. Let's just say that you didn't need to be an expert lip-reader to decipher his obscenities.
14. After a prolonged period of pressure, with Ireland virtually camped on the England line, who eventually scored the only try for Ireland in the Ireland versus England match?

Answer: Brian O'Driscoll

Brian O'Driscoll was really in the wars during this match. Despite picking up the Man of the Match award, he admitted that "There were a few hazy parts for me". However, his try was classic, diving under two English forwards to score a try that Ronan O'Gara failed to convert. Ireland led by 11 points to three.
15. In the Ireland versus England game, did England score a try and who won?

Answer: Yes, Ireland

A penalty from Ronan O'Gara took the score to 14-6, and Ireland seemed home and clear. However, a grubber kick from Andy Goode let Delon Armitage in for a fine try, converted by Goode, turning the final score into 14-13, which rather flattered England. But Ireland went into the fourth round at the top of the table and the only team still able to win the Grand Slam.
