The Pawtucket Red Sox were founded in 1970 as members of the class AA Eastern League before moving to the class AAA International League in 1973. Playing home games at McCoy stadium, they are the leading Minor League affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. They were IL champions four times between 1973 and 2014.

The team were unable to maintain that sort of form in the succeeding seasons and, with attendances declining during the Great Depression, they played their final season in 1931, officially folding in 1933.

The United States Tennis Championships (later the US Open) were held at the Newport Casino from its original edition in 1881 until 1914, after which they relocated to New York. Napoleon Lajoie was born in Woonsocket in 1874. Playing at second base, Lajoie led the AL in home runs in 1901, and was the RBI leader three times.
