1. The University of Utah Utes have been particularly successful in which one of these sports, winning numerous NCAA national titles?

Answer: Skiing

The University of Utah was founded in Salt Lake City in 1850. Their nickname of Utes comes from the Native American tribe of that name, who have given the University permission to continue using it. The Utes have been very successful on the ski slopes, winning the NCAA Co-ed team title in that sport for a then record 11th time in 2019.
2. Which NFL quarterback, born in Salt Lake City, was named MVP of Super Bowl XXIX in January 1995?

Answer: Steve Young

Steve Young was born in Salt Lake City in 1958 and attended college at Brigham Young University in nearby Provo. Drafted by the Los Angeles Express of the USFL in 1984, he moved to the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following year. The Buccaneers traded him to the San Francisco 49ers in 1987, where he initially acted as a backup to Joe Montana.

In January, 1995, he quarterbacked the 49ers to victory over the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX.
3. Tony Finau, from Salt Lake City, was a professional in which sport in the early 21st century?

Tony Finau was born in Salt Lake City in 1989. He turned pro aged just 17 in 2007, and won his first PGA tour title in Puerto Rico in 2016. He had a breakout year in 2018, finishing in the top ten of three of the four Majors and being given a captain's pick for that year's USA Ryder Cup team.
4. Brigham Young University Cougars are renowned for their American football squads, winning the National Championship in 1984. Which legendary head coach led them to that triumph, and later had the team's stadium renamed in his honour?

Answer: LaVell Edwards

BYU, as the school is normally referred to, was founded in Provo in 1875. LaVell Edwards was appointed head coach of the Cougars gridiron squad in 1972 and embarked on a 29 year career in which the school won 19 conference titles. In 1984, they were unbeaten and defeated Michigan in the Holiday Bowl, which resulted in them being named consensus national champions. Prior to his final game in charge, in 2000, Cougar Stadium was renamed after Edwards.
5. Real Salt Lake are a professional team in which sport?

Answer: Soccer

Real Salt Lake began playing in Major League Soccer in 2005. In 2009, they won their first MLS Cup, defeating Los Angeles Galaxy in the final. In 2011, they made it to the final of the CONCACAF Champions League, where they lost to Mexican team Monterrey.
6. Merlin Olsen, from Logan, was selected to 14 Pro Bowls during an NFL career which was spent in its entirety with which team?

Answer: Los Angeles Rams

Merlin Olsen was born in Logan in 1940, and played college football at Utah State University. A defensive tackle, he was selected third overall in the 1962 NFL draft by the Rams. He became part of a defensive line nicknamed the "Fearsome Foursome", alongside Deacon Jones, Rosey Grier and Lamar Lundy. Olsen was selected to the Pro Bowl each year from 1962 until 1975, but never appeared in a Super Bowl.

After his retirement, he had a successful career both as a TV commentator and actor.
7. The Winter Olympics took place in and around Salt Lake City in 2002. The alpine skiing events took place in three nearby resorts - which one of the following was NOT one of those venues?

Answer: Aspen

Deer Valley was the venue for the slalom events; Park City hosted the giant slalom; and the downhill, combined and Super G events all took place at Snowbasin. Aspen is a ski resort in Colorado.
8. Utah State University is a member of the Mountain West Conference. Which city would you need to visit to watch the Aggies playing various sports on home turf?

Answer: Logan

Utah State University was founded in 1888 in Logan as an agricultural college, thus the Aggies nickname. They were members of a number of different conferences, including the Sun Belt and Western Athletic Conference, before joining the Mountain West in 2013.

Although they had never won an NCAA national title in any sport by the end of 2019, they have been quite successful at conference level in a number of sports, including men's cross country and women's gymnastics.
9. The Utah Jazz began playing NBA basketball in Salt Lake City in 1979, following relocation from which city?

Answer: New Orleans

The Jazz were founded in New Orleans in 1974, but venue problems in the Crescent City saw them relocate to Utah just five years later. Despite the fact that Salt Lake City has no jazz heritage, the owners declined to change the team's nickname. The Jazz made the NBA finals in both 1997 and 98, but had the misfortune to run into a Michael Jordan-inspired Chicago Bulls team on both occasions.
10. If you were visiting Utah and decided to go and watch the Ogden Raptors take on the Orem Owlz, which sport would you be watching?

Answer: Baseball

Utah didn't have a Major League Baseball team in 2020, but Minor League Baseball is extremely popular in the state. Orem Owlz and Ogden Raptors are both members of the Pioneer League, which exists at Rookie level. The highest level team based in Utah in 2020 were the Salt Lake Bees, who were members of the AAA Pacific Coast League.
