Quebec won the first game of the Wales Conference quarterfinal series with Montreal in overtime 3-2. Montreal went on to win their next seven straight playoff games, including sweeping the Buffalo Sabres in the Wales Confrence semi-finals, and the first three games in the Wales Conference final over the New York Islanders.

The two teams combines to score 61 goals total, The Red Wings-Maple Leafs series scored a total of 54 goals, the Islanders-Penguins series and the Canucks-Kings series both scored a total of 51 goals.
