Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Dallas Cowboys were founded in what year?

Answer: 1960

Clint Murchison Jr. and Bedford Wynn were granted the franchise on January 28, 1960, and they turned a lowly expansion team into one of the most successful franchises in the NFL. Tex Schramm and Gil Brandt were the lynch pins in the front office behind this success during the 1960's and 1970's.
2. In which stadium did the Cowboys play their home games from 1960-1970?

Answer: Cotton Bowl

The Cowboys played in a stadium intended for college teams for 11 seasons before moving into the now famously familiar Texas Stadium.
3. Who did the Cowboys draft in 1961 in the 1st round who would later go on to become known as "Mr. Cowboy"?

Answer: Bob Lilly

Bob Lilly was one of the greatest defensive tackles ever to play the game. While not blessed with an Adonis like body (some teammates even said when he took off his shirt he "looked soft"), he had an incredible knack for finding the ball and the person who had possession of it.

His tackling skills were legendary. Another skill was his incredible speed following the snap of the ball. He attributed this skill to a most strange ritual. He spent countless hours striking his eyeballs with his fingers to keep himself from blinking. Strange, but I guess it worked!
4. The Cowboys have played in numerous Super Bowls, but they also played in two NFL Championships prior to the Super Bowl's existence. To which team did they lose both games?

Answer: Green Bay Packers

The Cowboys lost their first appearance in 1966 by a score of 34-17 against a better Green Bay squad. The next year, the Cowboys lost the "Ice Bowl" in Green Bay. Bart Starr, quarterback of the Packers, scored on a 1 yard quarterback sneak behind the block of Jerry Kramer. That loss earned the Cowboys the not so complimentary moniker of "perennial bridesmaids".

The nickname would not last long.
5. The Cowboys won how many Super Bowls between 1970 and 2000?

Answer: 5

The Cowboys won Super Bowls VI, XII, XXVII, XXIII, and XXX.
6. How many Super Bowls did the Cowboys play in between 1970 and 2000?

Answer: 8

The Cowboys lost Super Bowls V, X, and XIII. They won Super Bowls VI, XII, XXVII, XXIII, and XXX.
7. Who was the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback for most of the 1970s?

Answer: Roger Staubach

Roger Staubach was drafted by the Cowboys in the 1964 draft in the 10th round. He was selected so low due to the fact that he had a 4 year commitment to the US Navy in return for his education at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. With that in mind, even though he'd won the Heisman Trophy as the best college player in America in 1963, teams passed on him because he couldn't play professionally for so long. Roger served in Vietnam prior to joining the Cowboys full time in 1968.

He was the first NFL player to begin his playing career after fulfilling his military commitment following his graduation from a military academy.
8. Who was the first coach of the Cowboys?

Answer: Tom Landry

Tom Landry was hired to be the first coach of the Cowboys in 1960. He played for the New York Giants as a defensive back, and started his coaching career with them. Landry was an innovative coach who developed great schemes including the "Flex" defense, which Dallas used successfully for many years.

He was also responsible for the return of the "Shotgun" formation, which is widely used in today's game in obvious passing downs.
9. Who was Dallas' first Super Bowl MVP?

Answer: Chuck Howley

If you got this one right, pat yourself on the back! All of the other players mentioned received the award, Roger in Super Bowl VI, Randy and Harvey shared the award in Super Bowl XII. Chuck was the first player to win the award while playing for the losing team. It was also odd because he was a defensive player, and up until that time, only offensive players won the award.
10. Who did the Cowboys play in Super Bowl V?

Answer: Baltimore Colts

The Cowboys lost to the Colts by a field goal with 5 seconds remaining by a score of 16-13. A rookie kicker by the name of Jim O'Brien calmly kicked the 32-yarder as the Cowboys once again played bridesmaid.
