Answer: Sapporo, Japan

Sarajevo won the vote against Sapporo by a single point after two rounds of judging. Gothenburg, Sweden was also a candidate but they were eliminated after the first round. The voting took place in Athens, Greece in 1978, when Los Angeles was also awarded the 1984 summer games.

Answer: Followed two different routes

After touching down in Dubrovnik, the torch relay split into two routes. The first route went east from Ljubljana to Sarajevo, and the other went west from Skopje to Sarajevo. After arriving at the opening ceremony, the Olympic flame was lit by Yugoslavian figure skater Sanda Dubravcic.

There was a list of six finalists for the mascot, and Yugoslav newspaper readers voted the wolf as their favourite. Vučko was designed by Joze Trobec, a Slovenian designer and illustrator.

The men's giant slalom was the disabled skiing event held in Sarajevo as a demonstration sport. Four disability classes were awarded medals but, as it was a demonstration sport, the medals didn't figure in the main medal count. Austria dominated the event, winning four of the twelve medals available.

Dr Ludwig Guttmann had been using sport as a rehabilitation aid for spinal injured patients and World War II veterans for many years, and he organised a multi-hospital games meeting which was held at the same time as the 1948 London Olympics. By 1960 he had several hundred competitors and this was the first "Parallel Olympics", the forerunner of the Paralympic games.

Still remembered today, and a popular video on Youtube, Torvell and Dean immortalised "Bolero" with their winning routine. They scored three perfect sixes and six 5.9s for technical merit. To thunderous applause, they swept the board with unanimous perfect scores for artistic impression.

The rules of ice dancing at the time permitted the music to run for a maximum time of four minutes and ten seconds. Torvill and Dean had "Bolero" cut down from its original time of seventeen minutes. However, it was still twenty seconds too long. They got around this by spending the first twenty seconds on their knees on the ice, as the routine was not deemed to have begun until the dancers began skating.

The USA team was defeated in the first round of the competition by eventual fourth place winners Canada. The USSR team were unstoppable, winning all of their games, and defeating Czechoslovakia 2-0 to win the gold medal. Sweden edged out Canada to claim the bronze.

Jure Franco recorded the fastest time in the second run down the hill, but his fourth place in the first round was only enough to win him silver behind Max Julen from Switzerland. For Yugoslavia though, silver was as good as gold.

Twenty two year old Gunde Svan won two gold, a silver and a bronze medal for cross country skiing at Sarajevo in 1984, winning the 15km and the 4 x 10km relay. As a rallycross driver, Svan won the Swedish National Championships, and placed third in the FIA European Championships in 1995.
