Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. European Cup - Which Scottish club did Feyenoord beat in 1970 to win their first European Cup?

Answer: Celtic

Feyenoord's first entry into the European Cup came in the 1961-62 season, when they failed to get past the first round. The 1969-70 season saw their fourth attempt to win Europe's top prize, in which they were able to get past clubs from Iceland, Italy, East Germany and Poland to reach the final, where they faced Scottish champions Celtic.

The game, played at the San Siro stadium in Milan on 6 May 1970 saw Feyenoord win 2-1, becoming the first Dutch club to win a European trophy, the year after their bitter rivals Ajax had failed to win the same competition. Entering the following season's competition as holders, Feyenoord were subsequently beaten in the first round.
2. European Cup - Which Spanish club did Inter beat in 1964 to win their first European Cup?

Answer: Real Madrid

Inter's first foray into the European Cup was in 1963-64, when they were able to negotiate a path all the way to the final, getting past clubs from England, France, Yugoslavia and West Germany before facing Spanish giants Real Madrid. The 1964 final was the ninth in the competition's history, and Real Madrid had played in six of the previous eight, winning the first five.

In the final, played at the Praterstadion in Vienna on 27 May 1964, despite Real Madrid's pedigree, Inter ran out 3-1 winners to emulate their local rivals AC Milan, who had won the competition the previous year.

Inter went on to retain the trophy the following season, in the process becoming the second side to win the European Cup in their own stadium.
3. European Cup - Which German club did Liverpool beat in 1977 to win their first European Cup?

Answer: Borussia Mönchengladbach

Liverpool first entered the European Cup in the 1964-65 season, where they reached the semi-final. However, over the next decade their record in the competition was poor, entering twice and not getting past the second round. In 1976-77, however, they got past clubs from Northern Ireland, Turkey, France and Switzerland to reach their first final, where they played German champions Borussia Mönchengladbach. Coincidentally, the German club had been Liverpool's opponents in the 1973 UEFA Cup final, when the English side won their first European trophy.

In 1977, the European Cup final was held at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on 25 May, with Liverpool winning the game by three goals to one to become only the second English club to win the competition. Liverpool's victory in 1977 was the start of a period of English domination of the tournament, with seven English victories in eight finals between 1977 and 1984, including four for the Merseysiders.
4. European Cup - Which German club did FC Porto beat in 1987 to win their first European Cup?

Answer: Bayern Munich

FC Porto's debut in the European Cup came in the competition's second season, 1956-57, when they failed to get past the preliminary round. Up to the 1986-87 season, the club only participated in the tournament five times, never getting past the second round in any of their appearances.

In the 1986-87 competition however, Porto got past clubs from Malta, Czechoslovakia, Denmark and the Soviet Union to reach the final against German champions Bayern Munich. The game was played at the Praterstadion in Vienna on 27 May 1987, and saw Porto win by scoring two goals in the 77th and 80th minutes to overcome Bayern's early lead and win 2-1. Porto's victory was the first for a Portuguese club in the competition since 1962, and only the second Portuguese European trophy in that 25-year period.
5. European Cup - Which Portuguese club did PSV Eindhoven beat in 1988 to win their first European Cup?

Answer: Benfica

PSV Eindhoven were the first Dutch team to participate in the European Cup, entering in the inaugural season in 1955-56, failing to get past the first round. Although regulars in European competition, the club were not regular entrants into the European Cup, only taking part in the tournament another five times up to the 1987-88 season, reaching the semi-final in 1976.

However, in the 1987-88 season, they got past clubs from Turkey, Austria, France and Spain to reach the final, where they played Portuguese champions Benfica.

The game was a tense affair, and ended 0-0 after extra time, which led to a penalty shoot-out that PSV eventually won 6-5. In the process, they became the third of the Netherlands' "big three" clubs to win the competition, and the second Dutch club to win the "Treble" of league title, domestic cup and European Cup in the same season.
6. European Cup - Which French club did Real Madrid beat in 1956 to win their first European Cup?

Answer: Stade de Reims

Real Madrid were one of the teams to take part in the inaugural holding of the European Cup during the 1955-56 season. At the time, entry was not necessarily based on success in the domestic league, with teams instead selected by the French football magazine "L'Equipe", whose editor, Gabriel Hanot, had come up with the idea for the tournament.

In the first tournament, Real Madrid (who had won the previous season's Spanish title), got past opponents from Switzerland, Yugoslavia and Italy to reach the final against French champions Stade de Reims.

The final, played at the Parc des Princes in Paris on 13 June 1956, saw Real Madrid run out winners 4-3, to begin an unprecedented period of European success - the club won six of the first eleven European Cup tournaments, including the first five, reaching the final on two further occasions.

Feyenoord had been a regular participant in European football since the early 1960s. Despite this, the club's first participation in the European Cup-Winners Cup was not until the 1980-81 season, having won the KNVB Beker the previous season. In that competition, the club got past clubs from Finland, Denmark and Bulgaria to reach the semi-final, where they faced Soviet club Dinamo Tbilisi. Over the two legs of the fixture, Feyenoord lost the first, held at the Lenin Stadium in Tbilisi on 8 April 1981 by three goals to nil, while the second, at the Feijenoord Stadion in Rotterdam on 22 April, saw Feyenoord win 2-0, losing the tie 3-2 on aggregate. The final, which was held at Hampden Park in Glasgow on 5 May 1966, ended 1-1 at the end of normal time, which led to thirty minutes of extra time. Borussia scored a second during this period to win the game 2-1 to become the first German club to win a European trophy. The second leg, at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven on 25 November, saw a 1-0 win for PSV, which led to a 1-1 aggregate score. Extra time failed to separate the sides, and so, as the concept of the penalty shoot-out had not been developed, and a replay was not possible, a coin-toss was held to determine the winner of the tie, with Roma coming out victorious. PSV entered the Cup Winners Cup on four further occasions, going on to reach the semi-final in 1971 and 1975.

The final was held at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus on 19 May 1971, and ended 1-1 after extra time. This led to a replay being held at the same venue two days later, which saw Chelsea win by two goals to one, claiming their first European trophy in the process. This saw Inter win the fixture 2-1 on aggregate and claim their third European trophy, following two European Cup triumphs in the 1960s. Inter won a second UEFA Cup three years later, while in 1998 they were victorious in the first UEFA Cup final held as a single game.

The game was restaged the following day, with Liverpool winning 3-0. However, in that 2002-03 season, they got past clubs from Poland, Austria, France, Greece, Turkey and Italy to reach their first UEFA Cup final, against Scottish club Celtic.

The final, held at the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville on 21 May 2003, ended 2-2, resulting in a further thirty minutes of extra time, in which the 'silver goal' rule operated, where extra time would end after the first 15 minutes if a team was leading. Porto scored a third goal during the first period of extra time that Celtic were unable to equalise, resulting in Porto claiming the trophy.

The following season, Porto went on to win their second European Cup, becoming one of the few clubs to win different European trophies in successive seasons.

18. UEFA Cup - Which Hungarian club did Real Madrid beat in 1985 to win their first UEFA Cup?

Answer: Videoton

Real Madrid first entered the UEFA Cup in the competition's first season in 1971-72, where they were knocked out in the second round. The first leg was held at the Sóstói Stadion in Székesfehérvár on 8 May 1985, and saw Real Madrid win 3-0.

The return leg, at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, was on 22 May, with the Hungarian side winning by a goal to nil, which led to a 3-1 aggregate victory for Real Madrid, and their first European trophy in almost twenty years. The following season, Real Madrid retained the UEFA Cup with a 5-3 aggregate victory over West German side Cologne.
19. The first club to win both the European Cup and UEFA Cup never won the European Cup-Winners Cup.

Answer: True

Having won the Eredivisie title in 1969, Feyenoord qualified for the 1969-70 European Cup. Although only the second Dutch team to reach the final, they became the first to win a European trophy when they won 2-1. Four years later, Feyenoord were playing in the UEFA Cup, having finished second in the Eredivisie the season before. Reaching the final, they won 4-2 on aggregate.

This made Feyenoord the first team to win both the European and UEFA Cups. However, they were not the first team to win two of the major European competitions, as Italian side AC Milan won the European Cup for the first time in 1963, and their first European Cup Winners Cup 1968.
20. The most successful club in the 39-year history of the now defunct Cup-Winners Cup won all three UEFA trophies during that period.

Answer: False

Barcelona won the Cup Winners Cup a total of four times during its 39-year history (1979, 1982, 1989, 1997), before going on to win a first European Cup in 1992. During the period of the Cup Winners Cup, between 1961 and 1999, the club reached a total of three UEFA Cup semi-finals, but never reached the final.

However, between 1955 and 1971, Barcelona participated in the predecessor tournament to the UEFA Cup, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, winning the trophy three times (1958, 1960, 1966), a record for that competition. Because the Fairs Cup was not organised by UEFA, participation in it is not recognised as part of a club's European record, and consequently Barcelona are not included among the list of clubs to have won all three of UEFA's major tournaments.
