Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year was Woking FC founded?

Answer: 1887

The team played their first match on the fifth of November 1887, on Wheatsheaf Common, beating Chertsey by six goals to one. Unfortunately, that was their only win of the season.
2. What colours have Woking's home kit sported since 1894?

Answer: Red and white halves

Woking's first kit was red-and-white striped, but they quickly switched to their present home colours.
3. Woking's first great achievement, was reaching the last sixty-four of the FA Cup, in which season?

Answer: 1907-1908

In what was a big achievement for a small team, they traveled to Bolton Wanderers and promptly lost 5-0. Nevertheless, the team was invited to join the Isthmian League, the top 'non-league' league for Southern England, and stayed in it until the 1990-1991 season.
4. Which of these grounds did Woking move to in 1922?

Answer: Kingfield

Their first match, on the 26th August 1922, drew a crowd of 3000 people.
5. Woking's first match at Wembley, saw them win the 1957-1958 FA Amateur Cup. Which team did they beat 3-0 in the final?

Answer: Ilford

71,000 fans saw Woking lift the trophy. Barnett were their semi-final opposition, and Wycombe had pipped Woking to the league title the previous season.
6. In the 1984-1985 season, Woking, who had by then plunged down the football pyramid, appointed a former player as their new manager. He became Woking's most successful manager ever, and remained with the team until 1997. What was his name?

Answer: Geoff Chapple

Colin Lippiatt was Geoff Chapple's coach, and Clive Walker became the team's star player in the 1990s. Charlie Mortimore was Woking's star player back in the 1950s. Under Geoff Chapple, Woking won promotion all the way up to the Conference, and claimed runner-up spot in it several times.
7. Woking shocked the nation in 1991, by reaching the fourth round of the FA Cup. Which of these league teams did they beat on the way?

Answer: West Bromwich Albion

After disposing of non-league Bath City, Kidderminster Harriers, and Merthyr Tydfil in the early rounds, Woking were drawn away at West Brom in the third round. Woking triumphed 4-2, and were rewarded with a home fourth round encounter with Everton. Despite the gulf of five divisions between the teams, Everton struggled to win 1-0.
8. In the mid-1990's, Woking continued their spectacular Cup runs. Which of these league teams did they NOT succeed in knocking out of the competition in the 1990's?

Answer: Coventry City

In the 1996-1997 FA Cup, Woking beat Millwall and Cambridge to reach the third round, and travelled to Premiership Coventry. To Coventry's amazement, the match was a 1-1 draw, and they had to replay the match at Woking's Kingfield ground. Due to a cruel own goal, Coventry scraped through as 2-1 winners, but the country was talking about Woking's acheivement.
9. Woking set a new record in 1997, by winning which Cup for the third time?

Answer: FA Trophy

The FA Trophy, the cup for all English non-league sides, had already been won by Woking in 1994 and 1995, and this third victory set a new record. They had already set a record by being the first team to reach two consecutive finals.
10. And finally, Woking are known as 'the Cards'. Did this nickname arise from the large number of red and yellow cards they picked up in the past?

Answer: No

The nickname is actually short for 'cardinal red', the colour of half of their shirts. This led to their early nickname, 'the Cardinals', soon shortened to 'the Cards'. If Woking's players ever do get booked, it's sure to be a mistake on the referee's part!
