Pine Villa FC where founded in 1895, and were renamed Oldham Athletic FC in 1899. Oldham did have some early success in the FA Cup. They reached the semi-final stage in the 1912-13 season only to be knocked out by Aston Villa 1-0. In the 1914-15 season they reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, losing to Sheffield United 0-3 in a replay.

Oldham Athletic played their home games at Boundary Park, which they have shared with Oldham Roughyeds from 1997 to 2009. It has the nickname of "Ice Station Zebra" due to it being known as one of the coldest grounds in the English football league. It is also one of the highest only behind the home ground of West Bromwich Albion, The Hawthorns, which is the highest.

It has the name Boundary Park because it is situated between the towns of Royton and Chadderton.

He got the record for the highest goal scorer in a match against Scarborough in 1989. He was forced to retire due to injury in 1990 and had gone into the coaching side of the game.

Believe it or not, "Chaddy the Owl" was flagged offside in the match by a linesman. A common shout by fans at any football game is "Are you blind Ref?" maybe this should include linesmen as well. The person who was wearing the Chaddy costume at the time later stated "Fair enough, I did have a replica shirt on-but I also have a big furry head!" Later on in the same year "Chaddy" was also reprimanded for mooning the fans of Cardiff City. "Chaddy" won back to back titles in the Football League's mascot race, 2002 and 2003.

While at a game in Blackpool in 2003, "Chaddy" had a scuffle with the Blackpool mascot Bloomfield Bear.
