Answer: George Best

One of the best footballers ever, George Best was born in Belfast and sadly died in 2005 aged 59. He played most of his football with Manchester United. He was part of the United team that won the European Cup in 1968 and was named European player of the year also in 1968. He left United in 1974 and played for various teams until he retired in 1984.

Gary Lineker was born in Leicester and started his playing career there with Leicester City in 1978. After playing 194 games and scoring 95 goals he was transferred to Everton in 1985. He played 41 games and scored 30 goals for the club before going to Barcelona in 1986.

He played 103 games for the Spanish club and scored 42 goals. In 1989 he went to Tottenham Hotspurs where he played 105 games scoring 67 goals. He finished his career in Japan. He played international football with England scoring 48 goals in 80 appearances.

He won the Golden Boot at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

Shankly was born in Scotland and played his football in England. He played one season for Carlisle United and then moved to Preston North End where he played until 1949. He became manager and served as such with Carlisle United, Grimsby Town, Workington and Huddersfield Town before taking over as football manager at Liverpool in 1959. In his 15-year reign he won promotion to the First Division, won three Division One titles, two FA Cup wins and the UEFA Cup in 1973.

Clough was a really good striker with an impressive record. Playing for Middlesbrough and Sunderland, he managed to score 251 goals in 274 outings from 1955 to 1964. After his playing career ended at 29 due to a major injury, he became a very successful manager.

He guided Derby Country to their first-ever Division One title in 1972 and managed the same feat with Nottingham Forest six years later. With Forest he won two successive European Cups (1979 and 1980).

As a footballer Dutch Ruud Gullit was considered as one of the most accomplished mid-fielders. He played with Dutch sides Haarlem. Feyenoord and PSV before moving in 1987 to Italy. He played there for AC Milan and Sampdoria before moving in 1995 to Chelsea, where he ended his playing career in 1998.

He won first Division titles with all the Dutch teams that he played with and with AC Milan. He was a member of the Dutch team that won the 1988 UEFA Championship (aka Euro 1998). He was player-manager for Chelsea (1996-1998) winning the FA Cup in 1997.
