Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The second episode of "The Wheel of Time" begins in an encampment of the Children of the Light, also known as 'Whitecloaks'. Self-righteous zealots that they are, they believe all Aes Sedai to be servants of the Dark One, yet their own actions are reprehensible. What are they doing in this opening scene?

Answer: Burning an Aes Sedai alive

Eamon Valda, one of the Whitecloak Questioners, dines while watching an unnamed Aes Sedai of the Yellow Ajah (healers) being burned at the stake. He waxes philosophical while removing the serpent ring from her severed hand and hanging it at his belt, along with numerous others.

Gagged and without hands, an Aes Sedai is unable to channel the One Power, and even with all of their abilities, they can still fall prey to such deadly misfortune.

Eamon Valda was portrayed by Abdul Salis.
2. With Trollocs in pursuit, Moiraine and Lan lead Mat, Rand, Perrin and Egwene out of the Two Rivers. At what village do they cross the Tarendrelle (one of the 'two rivers' bordering the region)?

Answer: Taren Ferry

Appropriately enough, a ferry is located at Taren Ferry, and the travelers entice the ferryman to quickly take them across the river. As they reach the other side, the Trollocs and Fade arrive and loudly express their frustration at being unable to follow.

Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) explains to the others that they have earned a reprieve, as one of the few things Trollocs fear is deep water (one Trolloc falls in and drowns while they watch).
3. After crossing the Tarendrelle, Moiraine deliberately sinks the ferry that brought them across.

Answer: True

When the ferryman sees all the Trollocs, he wants to go back to the other side of the river to try to find his family. But before he can do anything, Moiraine's warder Lan (Daniel Henney) slices the rope holding the ferry in place and Moiraine causes a whirlpool to sink it.

The ferryman, however, jumps into the water while his ferry begins to spin, reaching it just as it (and consequently himself) gets sucked under.
4. When they stop for the night, Moiraine pulls Egwene aside and speaks of being an Aes Sedai, including the swearing of the 'Three Oaths' on the oath rod. She explains that the oath rod binds them with the One Power, making it impossible to break those spoken promises. Which of these is NOT one of the Three Oaths?

Answer: Never to use the One Power to alter chance for personal financial gain

The conversation regarding the Three Oaths arises after Egwene asks Moiraine, "Are you going to kill us, like you did that ferryman?"

Moiraine explains how she is bound by the oaths, and that she did not, *could* not, have killed the ferryman, and that the man died of his own poor choice in jumping in the river and trying to reach his ferry.

She also explained that she *had* to sink the ferry, as allowing the man to return to the other side would have also resulted in his death, AND allowed the Dark One's creatures to cross the river.
5. Rand has a disturbing dream where he gags and disgorges an animal. What kind of animal?

Answer: A bat

In addition to the bat coming out of his gullet, Rand also sees a dark, shadowy figure with glowing red eyes before he wakes with a start.

He also quickly learns that each of his Two Rivers companions had the same dream with the bats and the mysterious figure. The creepiness of the occurrence is heightened when they find a number of dead bats littering the ground around their campsite.

Moiraine cautions them that dreams have power, and that they should let her know if such a dream happens again.
6. Continuing their journey, the travelers encounter the Whitecloaks, who stop them, question their purpose, and inspect their gear. Where does Moiraine say that they are headed?

Answer: Whitebridge

When asked if they are headed for Whitebridge, Moiraine responds in the affirmative, mentioning that she has a 'sister' in the city that she hopes will let them stay with her.

While being questioned, Moiraine has to carefully speak of their circumstances, forced to speak the truth, but couched in terms that do not reveal their true identity and intentions (Aes Sedai and the ultimate destination of Tar Valon).

Afterwards, Egwene confronts Moiraine, thinking that she lied about having a sister in Whitebridge. Moiraine simply says that all Aes Sedai are considered and are called 'sisters' to each other, as the Amyrlin Seat (their leader) is referred to as 'Mother'.
7. After their Whitecloak encounter, while riding, the youths from the Two Rivers begin singing a song: "We walk the footsteps of our fathers The trail blazed by our mothers They bought the land with their blood Long ago, long ago Oh sing, Sing of _____________" Sing of where?

Answer: Manetheren

When they finish their song, Moiraine says that it is good to remember Manetheren, but Mat says that it is just a song.

Moiraine then tells the story of Manetheren and how the Two Rivers is where Manetheren, one of the Compact of the Ten Nations that arose 200 years after the Breaking of the World, was located.

She stressed that the people of the Two Rivers are all that remains of once great Manetheren, and that the Old Blood runs deep in them all.
8. After stopping for the evening, Perrin has an encounter with a wild animal. What kind?

Answer: A wolf

We see Perrin hiding an injury on his lower leg from the others, as he moves apart from them to examine it. But while doing so, a small pack of wolves approaches him. Perrin freezes in place, trying not to startle the wolves into aggression, and he stays still while one of the wolves approaches and licks at his wound.
9. The pursuing Trollocs finally catch up to the group, just as Moiraine grows weaker from an injury sustained during the battle in the Two Rivers. Where does Lan lead the group to escape the creatures?

Answer: Shadar Logoth

The Trollocs won't approach the abandoned city of Shadar Logoth, and after they shelter within the city, Lan explains the history of the city once known as Aridhol. It was the city (and country) that abandoned Manetheren in their hour of need, and all of the city's inhabitants mysteriously disappeared, leaving behind a creeping darkness that devours anything it touches.

With Moiraine unconscious, Lan had no choice but to shelter where the Trollocs could not follow. Lan additionally warns the youths, "Touch nothing. Eat only the food you brought."
10. Despite Lan's warnings about the dangers of their chosen place of refuge, one of the four young people from the Two Rivers finds and keeps an ornate ruby-hilted dagger. Who?

Answer: Mat

After finding the dagger, the dark evil of Shadar Logoth presents itself, devouring one of the horses in mere moments. The group becomes separated, with Rand and Mat finding a gate to climb out of the city, while Perrin and Egwene are forced to jump from the city wall into the adjacent river (the Arinelle).

Lan manages to get Moiraine to a horse and they also escape the city, although not with either of the other two pairings. Just as the episode ends, Lan suddenly finds himself at the end of a sword, and Nynaeve, thought killed by Trollocs in the Two Rivers, demands to know where her friends are.
