Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A flashback to the Age of Legends opens "The Wheel of Time" season finale with Lews Therin Telamon (the last Dragon) and Latra Posae Decume (the Tamyrlin Seat) arguing over Lews' plan to try to cage the Dark One. How long ago does this happen?

Answer: 3000 years ago

This opening scene is spoken entirely in the Old Tongue, and takes place in a wondrous world of beauty and technology, with sleek aircraft flying above a futuristic city. This was the Age of Legends, when the Aes Sedai were at the height of their power, with both men and women working together to perform wonders.

Yet here we see Lews Therin Telamon (portrayed by Alexander Karim) trying to garner support for a joint male/female effort to cage the Dark One and prevent him from touching the world again. The Tamyrlin Seat (portrayed by Katie Brayben) is worried about the potential backlash, saying that his plan could destroy everything they know, and thrust society backwards a thousand years or more.

And, of course, in the 'present', we see a world that has barely a memory of the Age of Legends, and we know that Lews Therin's plan failed.
2. Rand and Moiraine have entered the Blight to face the Dark One at the Eye of the World, and it is not an easy journey. When they stop for a rest, Rand dreams of an encounter with the Dark One. What does Rand do to escape the dream?

Answer: Stabs himself

Rand 'wakes' to find moss growing on his hand and when he sits up, Moiraine asks, "What? What did you dream? Dreams have great meaning, especially here, so close to his touch." But Rand has barely begun his answer when Moiraine is skewered from behind by a sword.

Rand finds himself facing the Dark One (played by Fares Fares) from his earlier dreams, complete with burning eyes and mouth, and he reacts by shooting an arrow into the Dark One's eye. It barely phases him, and he pushes the arrow through, transforming his visage to that of a normal man in the process.

In their conversation, the Dark One recognizes Rand as Lews Therin (the Dragon) reborn, and comments on Rand's lack of readiness to face him with just one Aes Sedai and no knowledge of how to use the power. Rand, in an effort to escape, ends up exclaiming, "This is a dream!" and stabs himself through the belly with his heron-mark sword. Sure enough, he awakes, and Moiraine asks the same question as before... without dying this time.

Rand al'Thor is portrayed by Josha Stradowski, while Moiraine Damodred is played by Rosamund Pike.
3. Lan Mandragoran, left behind by Moiraine, decides to assist in the defense of Fal Dara at Tarwin's Gap.

Answer: False

Lan and Nynaeve share their concerns about Rand and Moiraine's departure and how they left everyone else behind. Lan is upset that he is unable to be there to protect Moiraine, which is his primary role as her Warder, and Moiraine has ensured he can't follow by masking their bond so that he cannot sense her. Nynaeve, of course, is scared for Rand and his newfound status as the Dragon Reborn and what that means.

In their conversation, Nynaeve admits to Lan that previously, when she had tracked them from the Two Rivers to Shadar Logoth, it was actually Moiraine that she had tracked, and not Lan. She tells Lan that Moiraine has a 'tell', and that she can teach him how to track her through the Blight.

Lan Mandragoran is played by Daniel Henney, while Nynaeve al'Meara is portrayed by Zoë Robins.
4. Agelmar Jagad, the Lord of Fal Dara, and his sister Amalisa prepare their people and their soldiers (and themselves) for the coming attack at Tarwin's Gap. They believe the large assault is the 'Last Battle', which is called by what name in the Old Tongue?

Answer: Tarmon Gaidon

The Trolloc (and Fade) army numbers five times that which has come before, and Agelmar (Thomas Chaanhing) and Amalisa (Sandra Yi Sencindiver) are sure that it is Tarmon Gaidon; the Last Battle. To that end, Lord Agelmar plans to fight to the last, and also to unearth the secret weapon that he has hidden in the fortress (see Question 8 to learn about it).

Tarmon Gaidon is the prophesied Last Battle where the Dragon Reborn must face the Dark One while the rest of the world faces the Dark One's armies. But despite the overwhelming odds facing them in Tarwin's Gap, this is only the first skirmish in what will be a larger conflict.
5. With all of the fighting men facing Trollocs and Fades in the Gap, a small group of five women prepares to defend the city walls using the One Power. Which of them takes the lead in linking together to form a 'circle' to direct their combined power?

Answer: Lady Amalisa Jagad

A call is put out for any women in the city who can channel to come and help defend the city, while everyone else (who is not preparing to fight) is being evacuated. Neither Egwene nor Nynaeve have any real understanding or control over their ability to channel the One Power, but they decide to answer the call, anyways.

The Shadowspawn army breaks through the defenses and begins rushing towards the city, and Lady Amalisa instructs the other women how to link with her, and she take control of a large amount of power - more than she is able to safely control. She is able to strike down the attacking creatures, but at the same time draws too much power, and begins to 'burn out' herself and the women linked with her.

Nynaeve manages to force Egwene out of the circle before she can be burned out, and it appears as though Nynaeve is not able to escape injury. In turn, Egwene draws on the Source and seems to heal Nynaeve, even though she has never used the One Power in that way, before.

Egwene al'Vere is portrayed by Madeleine Madden.
6. To face the Dark One, Moiraine gives Rand an object that is capable of increasing the flow of the One Power a hundredfold. What is it called?

Answer: A sa'angreal

Rand wonders how he'll be able to face the Dark One without knowing how to use the One Power, and Moiraine gives him the sa'angreal and explains that he will be able to respond instinctively when the time comes, just as he had before in times of stress. And with the sa'angreal to increase his power a hundredfold, that power may be enough defeat the Dark One and reseal his prison before he can fully break free.

In the literary world of "The Wheel of Time", there are angreal, which are more common, but less powerful than sa'angreal, and there are also ter'angreal, which do not amplify the One Power, but are like devices that use the One Power for a specific function.
7. At the Eye of the World, Rand finds himself in a vision of an alternate life that, according to the Dark One, he can make into reality. What is the temptation?

Answer: Married to Egwene with a baby girl

Upon arriving to the Eye of the World, Rand seems to recognize the place, and he realizes that this is the same place that he previously fought the Dark One as Lews Therin Telamon. When he touches the ancient symbol of the Aes Sedai (a Yin-Yang shape) on the floor, he suddenly finds himself in a vision where he is married to Egwene and they have a baby girl named Joiya.

In the 'real world', Rand is unconscious and Moiraine is faced with the Dark One in physical form. She tries to attack him, but is easily rebuffed and shielded from the Source.

In the vision, the Dark One tries to convince Rand that he can make this vision a reality if he uses the One Power and empties himself of everything - anger, fear, sadness - and turn it into want, turning the vision into reality.

But Rand realizes that while it may be a vision that *he* wishes was reality, he knows that it is not something that Egwene would want. He knows that she wants to become an Aes Sedai, and has already put that other possibility - a life with Rand - behind her. So, instead, he turns the power against the Dark One and (seemingly) vanquishes him. His smile as Rand does so belies the fact.
8. Padan Fain infiltrates the fortress palace within Fal Dara with two Fades and steals an object of great value and power. What item?

Answer: The Horn of Valere

Lord Agelmar believes that Tarmon Gaidon has arrived, and orders the Horn of Valere to be retrieved from its hiding place. According to the prophesies, the Horn of Valere will be used at the Last Battle by or for the Dragon Reborn, and it has been secretly hidden in Fal Dara for a very long time.

(In the books, the Horn is discovered at the Eye of the World, and it is known to be able to summon the Heroes of Legend to fight for whoever blows the horn - whether good or evil.)

With most of the soldiers at Tarwin's Gap, the only ones left behind are those tasked with prying up the stones hiding the Horn... along with Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford) and Loial (Hammed Animashaun). Padan Fain (Johann Myers), with his two Fades, is easily able to overcome the soldiers (and Loial), and take the Horn of Valere. He does not harm Perrin, but states that all five of them (Perrin/Rand/Mat/Egwene/Nynaeve) - as ta'veren - still have a role to play in upcoming events.
9. In the aftermath of the battle with the Dark One, Lan finds Moiraine and Rand and they all begin the journey back to Fal Dara.

Answer: False

Before Lan finds them at the Eye of the World, Rand tells Moiraine that he has decided to leave and strike out on his own. He knows that he will eventually go insane due to the corruption of the male half of the Source, and he does not want his friends and loved ones to be in danger because of him. He asks Moiraine to tell the others that he did not survive the fight.

When Lan arrives, he asks Moiraine to unmask their bond, but she admits that she is unable to touch the Source, and is thus unable to reestablish their bond.
10. The episode (and season) ends with a teaser scene, showing the far western shore of the continent and an invading fleet of ships. Using channelers, how do they attack the shoreline?

Answer: They create a tidal wave

The epilogue scene shows a mountainous shore with a narrow beach, and a single girl playing in the sand. She looks up to see a fleet of ships approaching. On the ships, enslaved female channelers work in unison to create a tidal wave that they send racing towards the shore and the hapless little girl. An ominous preview of a new adversary to face in Season Two.
