The elephant ran out of the fog in the street and the trucker just avoided hitting her. When the officers arrived later, the elephant was lying on the street, surrounded by townspeople.

Scully was dubious of Mulder's theory that the destruction in the city was due to an invisible elephant, but he said he'd seen Copperfield make the Statue of Liberty disappear.
