After seeing that, he stormed out of the house and drove off. Looking in the rearview mirror, he saw a bloody, rotting vision of his face and started hitting the mirror. Distracted, he drove into a tree and was pronounced dead at the scene.

When talking to Scully and Mulder, McAlpin's widow Robin pulled out a large pink conch shell her son had dug up in his sandbox. On the inside of the shell, there was a ritual symbol painted in red.

When Scully got to the gravesite, she found Mulder recovering from his voodoo-inflicted wounds. Wharton's body was lying dead on the ground, and Mulder informed her that Bauvais had killed him. Scully looked in the coffin and saw Bauvais's dead body lying inside.

However, when Wharton was being buried he was seen screaming and fighting inside the coffin. Whatever voodoo had been used on McAlpin earlier to make him seem clinically dead had clearly been used on Wharton as well, and he was being buried alive.
