Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Following the closure of the X-Files, Mulder and Scully took pains to not be seen together. What sign did Scully give Mulder when she wanted to meet with him?

Answer: Placed the picture of his sister face down on his desk.

After the closure of the X-Files, Scully was teaching medical classes at the FBI while Mulder was assigned to a bank fraud investigation which he felt was just busy work since he already had enough evidence to close the case. Although they didn't want to be seen together, Scully politely addressed him, "Good afternoon, Agent Mulder", when she ran into him in the hallway at FBI headquarters.

He was distracted however and didn't reply. When he got to his desk, he saw the picture of his sister Samantha face down on the desk with a "Post-It" note stuck to it.

They then met in a parking garage at the Watergate complex where Scully expressed concern for his well-being since he seemed to have lost interest in his work.
2. In a flashback sequence, Mulder remembered the night that his sister disappeared. Their parents were out, and Mulder was in charge. What were he and his sister doing at the time, according to this particular episode?

Answer: Playing a game of "Stratego"

Mulder and his sister Samantha were home alone on that evening, as their parents were visiting neighbors. Samantha and he had just started arguing about a television show that Mulder wanted to watch when the electricity went out, the house started shaking and red lights came through the window.

Then the door burst open with a blinding light, and Mulder could just make out a tall, thin, alien-looking figure standing in the door. He tried to get his father's gun, but he watched, unable to move, as his unconscious sister levitated out the window.

The flashback sequence of Samantha's abduction was a continuity error for the "X-Files" show; according to the first season episode "Conduit", Mulder was in bed when Samantha was abducted.
3. Mulder went to see Senator Matheson who it turned out was one of his sources for his X-Files work. The senator was playing a piece of music which he explained had been included on the tapes sent by NASA on the Voyager mission. Which Bach masterpiece was it?

Answer: The Brandenburg Concerto

It was the Brandenburg Concerto 2 specifically which Senator Richard Matheson informed Mulder was the first selection of music included on the Voyager mission. According to the NASA website, this is a true statement, and other selections included on the Voyager mission's "Golden Record" are Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony", Mozart's "The Magic Flute", Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode", and Navajo chants.

The intent was to provide a taste of Earth to any extraterrestrial civilization that might intercept the spacecraft. Matheson played the music loudly to block any listening devices that might have been planted in his office.

When the music stopped, Matheson asked Mulder if he liked Bach, to which Mulder replied, "I live for Bach". Matheson then played the piece again so they could continue their conversation.
4. Senator Matheson told Mulder that information had been intercepted at one of the radio telescope sites and that Mulder had about a day to get there to recover the evidence before it was destroyed. Where did Matheson send Mulder?

Answer: Puerto Rico

Matheson asked Mulder if he was familiar with the High-Resolution Microwave Survey, to which Mulder responded that it was a search for extraterrestrial radio signals and that it had been shut down. Matheson then told him to go to the radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and that he had a day to get there before the Blue Beret UFO Retrieval team would arrive.

When Mulder asked him what was there, Matheson handed Mulder a printout of numbers which he said was "content". Incidentally, the Arecibo Observatory is a real site and wasn't shut down as indicated in the episode.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
5. When Mulder arrived at the radio telescope site, what did he find in the restroom at the facility?

Answer: A man

Mulder broke into the control room and used a tape recorder to record his observations. He reported that the electricity had been shut off but the equipment was still operating. When he went into the restroom to get water, he found a man crouched in the corner.

The man, who identified himself as Jorge Concepcion, couldn't speak English, but he was clearly terrified of something, and he drew a picture of an alien head on the wall. When the tape machines suddenly came on and a loud static buzz started, Jorge was spooked and ran outside into a storm. Mulder searched for him and found him dead, sitting against a tree with his hands held out as if to protect himself. Mulder couldn't find any injuries, puncture wounds or singeing due to lightning, but he had goosebumps and a look of fear on his face. "It's as if he's been frightened to death", Mulder said into his tape recorder.
6. When Scully went to Mulder's apartment to look for clues on his disappearance, she printed out a document she found on his computer but was interrupted by a pair of agents who had been watching for Mulder. What did one of the agents think that the paper was?

Answer: A printer test sheet

Scully went to Mulder's apartment to try to find out what happened to him. She was interviewed by Skinner, but Skinner believed she didn't know anything because she was worried. She tried different passwords to get into Mulder's computer - "Spooky", "Samantha", but the one that worked was "Trustno1".

She saw that Mulder had recently been viewing a document and didn't know what it was so she printed it out but was interrupted by the agents who had been watching Mulder's apartment. The printout fell to the ground before Scully could get it. One of the agents spotted it and asked the other agent what it was, only to be told that it was a test sheet for the printer.

The agent tossed it in the trash. Meanwhile, Scully had told them that she was there to feed Mulder's fish, so she spilled the fish food and used the crumbled paper to sweep up the mess.

She then pretended to throw it away but actually slipped it into her sleeve before leaving the apartment.
7. Scully took the printout from Mulder's computer to the U.S. Naval Observatory, and the scientist she spoke with said that it resembled a signal that had been intercepted at Ohio State University in 1977. What name was given to that signal?

Answer: Wow!

The scientist Scully spoke with was very excited about the printout; he told Scully that it was better than the Wow! Signal. When she asked him if this signal came from the Ohio State project, he told her that he wasn't sure and that there were several SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) sites. He mentioned Berkeley, Harvard, Argentina and NASA projects in California and Puerto Rico.

The Wow! Signal was real and was so named because the person who detected it, Jerry R. Ehman, wrote "Wow!" on the side of the printout when he viewed it. The signal was detected at a SETI project site using the radio telescope at Ohio University. The signal lasted for seventy-two seconds but has not been detected again. In 2012, a message was beamed from the Arecibo Observatory in the direction of the signal. The message contained 10,000 "Twitter" messages in honor of the 35th anniversary of the Wow! Signal.
8. When Scully went to the airport to take a flight to find Mulder, what step had she taken to make sure she wasn't followed?

Answer: Purchased a ticket to St. Croix

Scully had looked through airline manifests from Washington, D.C. to the SETI sites mentioned by the scientist at the U.S. Naval Observatory, and she found Mulder on a flight to Puerto Rico; he had used the pseudonym George E. Hale. Hale was a solar astronomer, and Mulder had told Scully about him when they had their conversation in the Watergate parking garage.

When Scully was at the airport, she realized she was being watched by a man and a woman who looked like they were on vacation. She managed to ditch them, but we heard the man say to his partner, "Relax. We know where she's going. St. Croix." Scully watched them leave and then she went to the counter and purchased a ticket to San Juan.
9. While Mulder was in the control center at the radio telescope site, recording his observations for Scully, the building started shaking and a blinding light appeared, similar to when his sister was abducted. What did Mulder see when the door flew open?

Answer: An alien

Mulder was frustrated: "Nothing but evidence and again, no evidence at all". The printouts were transmissions from the Voyager, and he wondered whether the transmissions had been intercepted and sent back or whether it was some classified satellite project or if "it was just some elaborate joke played on us who want to believe". While Mulder was recording the message to Scully, the lights on the equipment started flashing and all of the recording material started to run. Unusual sounds, similar to an animal growling were being played on the reel-to-reel tape, and then it started playing back what he had recorded for Scully on the cassette tape. The door flew open and Mulder quickly closed it, pushing electronic equipment over in front of it. But the door opened with a blinding light, and when he tried to fire his gun, it didn't work. Staring at the door, he saw the same figure he had seen when Samantha was abducted - a tall, thin alien-looking creature.

Scully arrived and found Mulder passed out -- "I was sure you were dead", she said to him when he came to. As Mulder excitedly told Scully about his finds - the tapes and printouts, they heard vehicles approaching. Mulder wanted to take Jorge's body but Scully pointed out that they wouldn't be able to get it out of the country. She dragged Mulder away - he was able to grab the tape but that was all. As they drove off, the military men shot at them but they got away.
10. What did Mulder and Scully hear when they listened to the tape that he had taken from the radio telescope site?

Answer: Nothing

When Mulder and Scully rushed out of the radio telescope site, he had grabbed the reel-to-reel tape that had recorded the odd sounds he heard right before he saw the alien. But when he played it, the tape was blank. Scully suggested that it was due to the electrical storm degaussing the tape. "You still have nothing", she said. Mulder said that he still had his work, and he still had her. Scully left when he started to listen to his bank fraud tapes, but as soon as she was out of the room, he put the reel-to-reel tape back on and tried to listen to it again.
