Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In previous episodes there were several situations of concern about Sue Ellen's drinking; she drank too much alcohol and too often. This episode opened with Sue Ellen at her obstetrician's office. Her doctor very straightforwardly told Sue Ellen that she must quit drinking. How did Sue Ellen react?

Answer: She became very defensive. She told her doctor that she was "exaggerating the situation".

Sue Ellen was shown taking a "nip" (a swallow of drink) from a small, silver flask immediately after she parked her car to go into the doctor's office. Her obstetrician was very succinct with her advice. Sue Ellen was told she was endangering the life of her unborn child and adversely affecting her own health. Sue Ellen became very angry and told her doctor that perhaps she needed to find a doctor who was "more understanding".
2. Lucy's recent break-up with boyfriend, Kit Mainwaring, had left her depressed. She had been willing to try some artificial stimulation to make herself feel better. Her solution was to buy high-end jewelry and then trade her purchase(s) at the local pawn shop to get money to support her recent habit. In this episode what was Lucy buying - illegally?

Answer: Pills - amphetamines

In a previous episode three of Lucy's (high school aged) girl friends had convinced her to take the "uppers" to feel better. In this episode, (apparently) Lucy was hooked. Her solution to be able to buy more pills (from the local young man who was the supplier to these high school girls AND the "boyfriend" of one of Lucy's friends) was to buy expensive things - like jewelry - and take it to the pawn shop. Lucy shopped at The Store (the place where her aunt, Pam, worked) and it was not long until Pam suspected something was not right with those purchases and Lucy's behavior.
3. As Lucy made one of her jewelry purchases she was assisted by a Sale Associate named "Susan" - as shown on her name badge. This actress was the daughter of the producer "Dallas" for the first nine seasons of the series. This was a tiny part for her but it would prove not to be her only role in "Dallas". Who was the actress?

Answer: Sherril Lynn (Katzman) Rettino

The actress was billed at the time of this episode (March, 1979) as Sherril Lynn Katzman; she would also work professionally as Sherril Lynn Rettino. Her father was Leonard Katzman. He was a notable force behind the scenes for the series "Dallas". He worked as executive producer, producer, writer and/or director for many of the episodes of "Dallas". One source tells us Sherril Lynn appeared in at least one episode in each of the fourteen seasons of the original "Dallas" series. That may lead us to think not only is it good to be King, it is good to be the daughter of the king.
4. As Bobby and Pam left the offices of Ewing Oil on their way to dinner they met Sue Ellen who was just getting there to meet J.R. Sue Ellen told Bobby and Pam that she and J.R. were planning to go to a fund-raiser for the hospital together later the same evening. J.R. was no where to be found. What did Sue Ellen do to pass the time as she waited in his office?

Answer: Drank a bottle of liquor

J.R. had a meeting with a few influential men from the local political arena. Of course, he hoped they would help him oust Cliff Barnes from the OLM (Office of Land Management) and/or disband the organization entirely. J.R. completely ignored his promise to meet Sue Ellen.

She drank until she was inebriated and then she called Cliff Barnes. Cliff was entertaining another lady friend so he refused Sue Ellen's plea to let her come to visit him. She tearfully ended the call.
5. Bobby and Pam found Sue Ellen asleep - drunk and asleep - inside her car where it was parked on the side of the road. They took her to Southfork and helped her to bed. J.R. arrived some time later asking about her. Who insisted on being left alone with J.R. first - to have a talk with him?

Answer: Miss Ellie

This was one of the best scenes - featuring Miss Ellie - in the entire series. She called J.R. "power hungry". She told him that he had neglected Sue Ellen throughout their entire marriage yet in spite of everything he had done (and, not done), Sue Ellen still loved him. Miss Ellie compared J.R. to Jock in that he enjoyed the extremes of money and power.

She said, "You're like your daddy in that. But he has redeeming qualities. His love for his sons for one. I don't know that you have any redeeming qualities, J.R." Truer words, never spoken, right?
6. Sue Ellen was not the only Ewing family member who needed some attention. Lucy went to Ray's apartment and it was obvious she was "high". Ray gave her some coffee and it seemed to help get her back to "normal". What did Lucy do when Ray went to "the house" to get Bobby?

Answer: She left - went back to the party where she had been earlier.

Bobby had a busy night! First he had "rescued" Sue Ellen and then he had to do the same for Lucy. Ray thought Lucy was stable (sober, that is) enough to relax and wait for him to bring Bobby so the two of them could get her into the house without having to offer an explanation for her delay and behavior. Lucy had other plans.

She went straight back to Ann's house - to the party. Bobby and Ray followed her there and found her dancing with a young man and she was "high" again. They took her back to Southfork and with Pam's help offered an alibi.
7. J.R. thought he had emptied all of Sue Ellen's liquor. Bobby thought he had disposed of all of Lucy's pills. Both were wrong! When Lucy and Sue Ellen were left at Southfork alone they both managed to find and consume their substance of choice. Then there was an accident. What happened?

Answer: Sue Ellen fell down a flight of stairs; Lucy was too "stoned" to do anything to help her.

Against Pam's better judgment, all of the Ewing family members kept their plans - just as if "things" would be OK to leave Sue Ellen and Lucy alone at the ranch. Lucy found her stash of pills. Sue Ellen found her hidden bottle of booze. Sue Ellen was shown carrying a suitcase from the upstairs to the downstairs but fell to the lower floor from a few steps above it.

She was almost unconscious and Lucy was too "stoned" to help her at all. Lucy did not even have the ability to call for help. Ray was left with the charge to check on the two of them throughout the day and he arrived very soon after Sue Ellen had fallen.

It was he who called for help and alerted the rest of the family.
8. Sue Ellen was admitted to Dallas Memorial Hospital. She was not severely injured and her baby appeared to be stable; neither displayed any signs of premature labor. Sue Ellen's obstetrician shared her concerns with J.R. about the dangers of Sue Ellen's drinking. What specifically did the doctor recommend?

Answer: Sue Ellen should spend some time in a sanitarium.

Dr. Krane, Sue Ellen's obstetrician, was very blunt with J.R. about the seriousness of the dangers to both Sue Ellen and her unborn child. J.R.'s expressions appeared to be a mixture of apathy, guilt, arrogance and concern. The doctor was determined to stand her ground.

This was a scene with another snappy comeback. When the obstetrician told J.R. that she knew a clinic that could help Sue Ellen, J.R. responded with the quip, "Thank you, doctor, but the Ewings take care of their own." We simply must love the comeback from the doctor: "So far the Ewings haven't been doing a very good job of it."
9. Ray had stayed at Southfork with Lucy while the family visited with Sue Ellen at the hospital. Who returned to Southfork to talk with Lucy?

Answer: Bobby

Of course it was Bobby. He talked with Lucy about not only what had happened that day but what could have happened. He hoped he could make Lucy realize the seriousness of her use of pills to hide from her feelings. Lucy cried and seemed contrite enough but time will tell.
10. While she was still in her hospital bed, J.R. told Sue Ellen that she was going to spend some time in a clinic "on the other side of Fort Worth". She resisted but J.R. had the support of Jock and Miss Ellie with this decision. The episode closed as J.R. left Sue Ellen at the clinic. What was that very last scene?

Answer: Two clinic workers dragged Sue Ellen up the pathway toward the building as she screamed over her shoulder at J.R.

As the title would lead us to believe, this episode was "to be continued". It was a very dramatic ending with Sue Ellen being dragged from J.R.'s car to the building. Two clinic workers (big men) were one on either side of her as she wiggled and screamed.

Some of what she was screaming included her plans to get even with J.R. for leaving her there. What will she do? What could she do? Who will help her?
