Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, a barefoot Lalo was reading a newspaper and laughing. What story had tickled his funny bone?

Answer: Los Pollos Hermanos Fire Ruled Arson

Lalo was still in prison meeting with Saul, and when Saul asked what he was laughing at, Lalo said, "You wouldn't get it". The article he was reading was titled "Los Pollos Hermanos Fire Ruled Arson". A picture of the restaurant was displayed with the caption "A burnt-out shell is all that remains of the Los Pollos Hermanos off Manning Street in Los Lunas, due to an incident now being investigated by Los Lunas Police and Fire Departments".

The article was only shown briefly, but it did mention that there had been other property damage in the area over the past three months, including arson, so perhaps Gus Fring selected this location to blow up because it would be considered another random act of vandalism rather than a targeted hit against his business.

As mentioned in the quiz for the "JMM" episode, an abandoned restaurant was used to film the explosion/fire; it wasn't computer-generated.
2. As Lalo had told him last episode, Saul would need to pick up the bail money. When he gave Saul instructions in this episode, what feature did he tell him to look for in the desert?

Answer: A well

Lalo provided very detailed instructions on how to get to the location which was in southern New Mexico near Deming. Lalo told him to drive 30 miles down a dirt road, but then clarified it as "31.6 so make sure you use the little trip meter thing..." Lalo told him he'd then see a well, and when Saul asked for a description, Lalo gave a deadpan response, "It looks like a well".

He told Saul that his (Lalo's) cousins would meet him there: "You'll like them. They're good boys". We had already seen The Cousins picking up the cash from a warehouse that was filled with expensive cars, so we knew which family members Lalo meant. Saul wasn't feeling too keen on doing the pickup and tried to pitch other ideas to Lalo, which Lalo declined: "You're the right guy for this".

But then Lalo could see that Saul hesitating and told him that he'd find somebody else. Lalo then dismissed Saul and continued reading his newspaper, but Saul had a change of heart, at least for the right price he did. He asked Lalo for $100,000; Lalo responded: "100k for a little drive through the desert" and stared at Saul.

But then he suddenly agreed with a smile on his face: "Done!"
3. What happened to Saul after he picked up the bags from The Cousins?

Answer: He was ambushed by multiple gunmen

Saul waited at the well, practicing the phrase, "Yo soy abogado". While he waited, he poured some water out of his water bottle to clean his shoes (yeah, he'd regret wasting the water later). When The Cousins arrived, he babbled a bit, trying Spanish and English, and of course getting no response, but they did hand him the two duffel bags of money. Saul then drove off singing "Seven million dollars of cash in the trunk" to the tune of the beer bottle song.

He soon found himself followed by a jeep which he initially tried to have pass him, but then two SUVs stopped in front of him and the guys who got out had guns. Saul kept saying "abogado" and "amigo del cartel" as he was about to be killed, but then the guy pointing the gun at him dropped dead and a shoot-out commenced. Saul stayed low as the men were picked off, one by one.

When it appeared that they were all dead, a truck approached and out of it stepped Mike, the one-man wrecking crew. But one of the men was still on his feet and drove off.

The shootout was filmed in To'hajiilee, which was a frequent filming location for "Breaking Bad" and the place where Walt and Jesse had their RV cooks. One of the interesting tidbits that Vince Gilligan shared about the shooting was that they had a snake catcher roaming the set, to make sure none of the cast or crew were bitten while they were on location for several days.
4. When Saul's car died, Mike removed the bags, the license plate, and what other item that he had used to track Saul?

Answer: The gas cap

Mike's truck was damaged during the shootout so they were forced to take Saul's car, but as they drove down the road, Saul's car died also. Mike told Saul, "Get out. The alternator's shot. Literally". He then removed the license plate and the gas cap.

He looked briefly at the cap before putting it in his gun bag, and when he opened the bag, we could see the control device that he had used with the gas cap tracker back in season three. In that season, Mike tore his car apart after being followed and finally found the tracker in his gas cap.

He then bought the same tracking device and used it to follow Gus's men back to Los Pollos Hermanos. In this episode, Mike had been tasked with getting Lalo out of jail, so he had a definite interest in making sure that Saul arrived back in Albuquerque with the bail money.

After the ambush, Saul was in shock so he didn't ask a lot of questions, but he did ask if Mike had expected the ambush. Mike said that he would have brought more guys if he'd expected trouble.
5. Before Saul's car was sent to its final resting place, what did Saul take out of the car?

Answer: His "World's 2nd Best Lawyer" cup

After removing the license plate and the gas cap, Mike told Saul to push the car while he guided it. But Saul suddenly yelled for Mike to stop and then he went into the car. He searched around until he found the "World's 2nd Best Lawyer" coffee cup that Kim had given him.

He stared glumly at it, because like his car, it too had a bullet hole in it. He poured out the remaining liquid and took the cup. They then pushed the car off a small cliff and down an embankment.
6. When they camped for the night, Mike wrapped himself in an item and offered one to Saul. What item was it, that Saul declined probably because it reminded him of Chuck?

Answer: Mylar blanket

After disposing of the car, Mike and Saul headed out into the desert because as Mike pointed out, "One of those guys got away in a car, on the road, THIS road. We gotta get off it". After a few hours, they took a break under a tree, and Saul floated the idea of burying the bags and coming back later to get them. Mike dismissed the idea because they'd never be able to find them again. Saul started to dig using the license plate, ignoring Mike's comments that it wouldn't work and that he was wasting energy: "If you manage to dig a hole big enough for those two bags, you might as well dig one for yourself".

They ended up spending the night on a hill among some rocks. Saul wanted to keep walking since it was cooler at night, but Mike pointed out, "You go out there in the dark, you're gonna break your leg in a prairie dog hole". Mike then wrapped himself in a mylar blanket and offered one to Saul who declined it. Mike told him that it would get cold very quickly but Saul wasn't interested and instead bundled himself up as best he could and then stared at Mike (or was it at the blanket?)
7. Kim was worried when Saul didn't make it home that night. Whom did she go see for help?

Answer: Lalo

Given their agreement to provide each other with full disclosure, Saul told Kim that he was picking up the bail money; he didn't provide all of the details but told her it was a quick drive down by the border. Mike wasn't happy when Saul told him that Kim would "think I'm chopped to pieces dead in some ditch". Mike told him, "She knows.

She's in the game now". Kim went to the jail and was able to see Lalo by claiming she was part of his legal team. She told him that they had something in common: "You want to know where your money is; I want to find Saul Goodman". Lalo was quietly enraged that Saul had told her who he was, but Kim pointed out that since she and Saul were married, she couldn't be forced to reveal what she knew. Lalo was amused: "You're his wife, and you love him, and he didn't come home last night, and you're scared enough to come down here and talk to me". Kim wanted to know where Lalo had sent Saul, but Lalo wouldn't tell her: "Your man - he's like a cucharacha.

Born survivor... If he's alive, he'll show".
8. While Saul and Mike were making their trek, how did a small trail of hundred dollar bills end up in the desert?

Answer: They fell through a hole in the bag Saul was dragging

To the jazzy sounds of Labi Siffre's "I Got the...", Mike and Saul made the long, slow trek across the desert with Saul taking occasional stops to check for phone service. After stopping for a brief water break, which amounted to a capful of water, Mike started to head out again, but Saul had the idea to drag the money bags rather than carry them. Mike told him it wouldn't work but Saul was determined to do it.

While dragging the bags gave Saul's shoulders a rest, it created another problem which Mike spotted when he turned to look back at Saul; one of the bags had torn, and there was a trail of money in the desert.

While Saul gathered it up, Mike tried to fix the hole by putting the license plate over it inside the bag. Incidentally, several fans on the "Better Call Saul" forums and reviews commented that they thought the song was Eminem's "My Name Is", but it turns out that Eminem sampled a portion of "I Got the..." for his song.
9. Toward the end of the episode, Mike once again spotted the gunman driving through the desert. What finally led the gunman to Saul?

Answer: Saul deliberately drew his attention

While Saul was picking up the cash that had slipped out of the bag, he tripped over a cactus and ended up with a long cactus spine in his foot. After pulling it out, he laid on the ground and screamed "I'm done". Mike tried to get him up, but he refused, "Everything hurts... I'm so thirsty".

When Mike told him that he needed to drink, he responded, "What's the point? So they can find a corpse with a mouthful of piss?" Mike then spotted a vehicle and told Saul to stay down while he headed up on a hill with his gun bag and set up behind some rocks.

He told Saul to "lie low. We're gonna have to wait him out", but Saul had a better idea. He put on the shiny mylar blanket, picked up the bags and started walking toward the road, telling Mike "get that thing ready".

The driver spotted Saul and as the vehicle raced toward him, Mike took a shot. He missed the first shot but the second shot was successful, and the SUV flipped multiple times behind Saul and ended up on its side. There were a couple ways to interpret the expression on Mike's face. Either he was relieved that he took the guy out before Saul was hit (it was close), or he was upset that the vehicle was destroyed since they could have used it.

When Mike checked the vehicle, the guy was dead, but unfortunately, his water bottle had been destroyed during the crash. Although the vehicle crash was filmed with a stunt man, actor Bob Odenkirk wasn't in front of the vehicle; he filmed his scene in front of a green screen and the crash footage was added later.
10. At the end of the episode, what did Saul end up drinking?

Answer: His urine

Mike knew how to survive in the desert. When they camped for the night, he built a water collector to collect dew. He placed a canteen cup in a hole surrounded by brush, and then placed a tarp over it. Unfortunately, there wasn't much in the cup come morning.

When he saw Saul going to take a leak, he told him, "I wouldn't waste that". So from that point on, Saul was carrying urine in his Davis and Main water bottle. But he didn't drink from it, even when Mike pressed him to do so because he was dehydrated.

But following Mike's success at taking out the hit man who was searching for them, Saul seemed to have a new attitude. Perhaps it was Mike's speech on what keeps him going, but Saul seemed determined to survive and took a big swig of the urine.

Then he picked up the bags and headed off, leaving the mylar blanket on the road. Did anyone else find it a bit surprising that given the number of survival items Mike had (the light sticks, the mylar blankets...), he didn't have extra water?
