Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Kids Are Alright"- Dean convinces Sam to check out Cicero, Indiana. What had Dean read about in the paper that prompted him to discuss it with Sam?

Answer: an unusual accidental fatality

The death of little Katie's father was the first of a few unusual deaths to make the newspaper. When Dean described this death, the man died on a table saw blade, Sam seemed less than convinced it would prove to be supernatural in nature. Dean admitted he had a desire to reconnect with a former lover as well.

Cicero, Indiana is north of Indianapolis, between Interstates 65 and 69, in Hamilton County. Cicero is a small town, under 10,000 people in 2007, making it ideal for mystical occurrences.
2. "The Kids Are Alright"- Dean discovered that his former lover, Lisa Braeden, had a son named Ben.

Answer: True

When Dean arrived at Lisa's home, she was having a birthday party for eight year old Ben. Ben intrigued Dean immediately, as the boy was practically a carbon copy of his own personality. Dean did a quick mental calculation and rushed off to find out if Ben was his child. Lisa said that Ben was not Dean's, but not until the end of the episode.

Nicholas Elia played Ben. He was also in the 2005 film "White Noise" with Michael Keaton and Chandra West.
3. "The Kids Are Alright"- The Winchesters determined that the creepy little kids were actually Changelings.

Answer: True

Changelings could perfectly imitate kids, and fed off of the mother until she died. In the meantime, it kept the real kids alive and killed off anyone who got in its way. Sam and Dean saved all of the real children and the real estate agent lady who was the first victim.
4. "The Kids Are Alright"- The new blonde demon hunter, Ruby, trailed Sam through the episode. What huge secret did she reveal when he demanded to know who she was?

Answer: she was a demon

Ruby had first implored Sam to look into the deaths of his mother's friends. Sam was shocked to learn how many people once close to their family had died. She told Sam he was "the chosen one" and that Yellow Eyes had done something to Sam before killing Mary Winchester. Sam wanted only one answer before he let her continue on, and that was to know who she was. So, finally she showed her black eyes and called him a racist.

It's too early to tell, but I wonder if she IS related to Sam in some way. She may even want to be human again, but she certainly has a stake in the outcome of Sam's existence. Katie Cassidy, Ruby, is the daughter of '70s icon David Cassidy, so I threw in the comical incorrect answer of Hasselhoff.
5. "The Kids Are Alright"- Did Ruby tell Sam she could help him save Dean if he worked with her?

Answer: Yes

Sam wanted NO part of a demon alliance, but she tempted him with the one thing he wanted more than anything else, just as demons always do. She told him if he helped her, she'd help him save Dean from the Crossroads demon. In the grand tradition of a good and evil alliance, or the idea that evil is a gray area, "Supernatural" waited until season three to blur the lines more acutely.

It happened on "Buffy" (Angel, Spike, Anya), on "Angel" (Wesley, Faith, Wolfram and Hart), and on "Charmed" (Cole, Wyatt, Billie) to name a few.
6. "Bad Day at Black Rock"- A man visited Gordon Walker in prison. What did this man, Kubrick, confirm for Gordon?

Answer: All of these

Kubrick also went back at the end of the episode and told Gordon that God wanted him to kill Sam Winchester. Gordon made it clear that he didn't even know if Sam was human and that he must die. Kubrick had the help of a man named Creedy, and felt God led him to Sam at the motel.

Jon Van Ness played Creedy and Michael Massee played Kubrick. You may remember Massee from "24" and "Carnivale". There was an episode of "A-Team" called "Black Day at Bad Rock" in 1983.
7. "Bad Day at Black Rock"- In John Winchester's storage facility, at Black Rock, the men discovered that a curse box was missing. What cursed item was in that box?

Answer: rabbit's foot

If you got this one wrong, you forgot to read the quiz title!
Ruby carried a demon killing knife on her person, but she did not appear in this episode. The rabbit foot was over 100 years old and cursed by a "woodoo" lady from Baton Rouge. A sexy European woman named Bela had contracted two low level thugs to break into the storage facility and steal it. John had the place booby trapped, so one of the men (Wayne) had some buckshot fired into his shoulder.
Coalfire earrings are the cursed item in "Undead and Uneasy", a novel by Mary Janice Davidson. The cursed boots came from an episode of "Charmed" season six called "Witchstock".

Lauren Cohan joined the cast as Bela. Lauren herself is an American actress, born in Pennsylvania in 1982.
8. "Bad Day at Black Rock"- Of these folks, who was the first person granted good luck, and then remarkable bad luck, by touching the item from the curse box?

Answer: Sam

Bobby never touched the rabbit's foot at all, but helped the Winchesters to erase the curse over the phone. Sam took the foot from Wayne and Grossman, but it was Wayne's luck he stole, as Wayne actually took the curse box. Wayne, having lost all luck, slipped on an empty beer bottle and fell backward onto a giant cooking fork. Sam inherited the luck, lost it when Bela stole it, and then Dean gained the luck back when he stole it back from her.

She didn't actually touch the foot until the very end of the episode.
9. "Bad Day at Black Rock"- After he lost the lucky/unlucky item, Sam experienced a series of bad luck situations. Which of these, and there were many, did he NOT experience?

Answer: fell into an open grave

Poor Sam! Here is the list of unfortunate events and situations, in the order of occurrence: spilled hot coffee on himself just after Bela stole the rabbit's foot from him; after the coffee, he rose and knocked a waiter down who had a fully loaded tray; fell down in the parking lot at Biggerson's and scraped both knees; he tripped on a electrical cord in Wayne and Grossman's apartment; stepped on the chewing gum outside of the aforementioned apartment; lost his shoe in a street grate trying to scrape the gum off of the bottom; the air conditioner in his motel caught fire; his sleeve caught fire after he put out the fire inside the AC unit; he knocked the curtains off the rod in his motel room and the two hunters (Kubrick and Creedy) were right outside his window; and lastly he was duct taped to a chair by said hunters and beaten until Dean arrived with the lucky foot in hand.
10. "Bad Day at Black Rock"- How much money were the scratch off lotto tickets worth that Bela stole from Dean?

Answer: $46,000

With Bobby's help, Dean tracked Bela to Queens, New York. He left Sam alone in the motel, stating Queens was two hours away. He found Bela, she told him he could have the foot for 1.5 million, so he stole it back from her. She tracked him back to the grave yard where they tried to do a ritual to eradicate the curse. She held the men at gunpoint, and even shot Sam in the shoulder. Dean decided to enroll her into the curse, so she'd agree to destroy the foot. He tossed it to her and said 'catch' and she caught it in her bare hand. So, as payback, she picked the scratch off tickets out of Dean's jacket before she left the grave yard. Dean told Sam they were up $46,000, so imagine his irritation when he discovered she'd stolen them!

Next on 'Supernatural': a town of sin awaits the men in "Sin City".
