Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first leg of the race, teams needed to choose between 'Buggy It' and what other task?

Answer: Build It

In Leg 1, teams made their way to Mount Joy, Pennsylvania to find their Detour task at Brubaker Family Farm. Upon arriving, they needed to choose between 'Build It' and 'Buggy It'. In 'Build It', teams assembled a miniature, functioning watermill. Once they built it and successfully tested it, they received their next clue.

In 'Buggy It', teams transported a buggy a mile and a half through a field. While two members pushed, two needed to sit inside the buggy at all times. At the end, they received their clue.

The Gaghan, Aiello, and Linz families finished 'Buggy It' while the remaining seven teams finished 'Build It'.
2. In Leg 2, teams made their way to Virginia for a Detour task. What Detour task involved carrying wounded soldiers out of a Civil War reenactment?

Answer: Heat of the Battle

In Leg 2, teams departed from Washington D. C. and made their way to a Civil War reenactment in Middleburg, Virginia. Here, a Detour was proposed; it was a choice between 'Heat of the Battle' and 'Heat of the Night'. In 'Heat of the Battle', teams headed into the crossfire of the reenactment and carried five clearly injured soldiers to a nearby medical tent.

In 'Heat of the Night', teams needed to use a keg of kerosene to fill a total of twenty kerosene lamps and set them alight. After the Detour, teams rushed to a nearby Pit Stop.

The Weaver, Schroeder, and Rogers families completed 'Heat of the Night' while the remaining teams did some heavy lifting in 'Heat of the Battle'.
3. Leg 4 took teams to Louisiana. In the Detour task called 'Play', teams needed to play which card game?

Answer: 21

Heading to Madisonville, Louisiana, teams encountered a Detour task at Fairview Riverside State Park asking for a choice between 'Work' and 'Play'. In 'Work', teams needed to don lumberjack outfits and use two-person handsaws to cut through thick tree trunks. Once four cuts of the tree were removed (at certain diameters) they would get their next clue.

In 'Play', teams needed to go to a riverboat and put on old-time outfits to play a game of 21 against a professional dealer. Once all team members beat the dealer in three non-consecutive rounds, even if the dealer bust, they would receive their next clue telling them to head to the Pit Stop in New Orleans' French Quarter.

The Branson, Weaver, and Schroeder families successfully completed 'Play' (though others tried) while the remaining teams completed 'Work'.
4. In Leg 5, teams completed their first international Detour in Panama. In 'Rhythm', what instrument was not carried?

Answer: Tuba

At Barro Colorado Island in Panama, teams encountered a choice between 'Rhythm' and 'Coos'. In 'Rhythm', teams needed to collect four different instruments commonly seen in Latin music, the saxophone, trumpet, conga drums, and trombone, all from different locations. Once accumulated, they would need to be brought to a local club for teams to collect their clue.

In 'Coos', teams needed to go into the rainforest with a pair of binoculars to search for five stuffed birds. Once they correctly identified these using a chart, they would receive their clue. For both tasks, teams needed to travel by 'Red Devil Buses'.

After the detour, teams returned to Panama City for a Road Block. The Godlewski, Linz, and Gaghan families completed 'Rhythm' while the Weaver and Bransen families completed 'Coos'.
5. In what country did teams complete the Detour task ('Brush' or 'Barrel') in Leg 7?

Answer: Costa Rica

Before returning to the United States, teams completed a Detour task in Costa Rica (in the town of Grecia). For this choice, teams needed to pick either 'Brush' or 'Barrel'. In 'Brush', teams needed to go to Sarchí and paint two cart wheels in an identical design as the specimen they were given to receive their next clue.

In 'Barrel', on the other hand, teams headed to Ingenio La Argentina to load sugar cane into a truck and deliver it to a rum factory. Once there, they had to search through several barrels to find their clue.

The Paolo and Linz families finished 'Barrel' while the Weavers, Bransens, and Godlewskis finished 'Brush'. After the Detour, teams flew to Phoenix, Arizona.
6. In Leg 8, teams completing the 'Bailing' Detour task needed to bail water out of a boat.

Answer: True

In Leg 8, teams found their Detour task at the Glen Canyon Dam in Page, Arizona. Here, a choice was made between 'Bearing' and 'Bailing'. In 'Bearing', teams needed to choose a boat and make their way (using compass bearings) to three different islands in the river.

The 'Bailing' Detour choice, which was more physically demanding, required that teams bail water out of a boat using buckets provided, and carry the boat to shore to receive their clue. After the Detour task, teams proceeded to Horseshoe Bend in the Colorado River. The Linz, Bransen, Paolo, and Godlewski families completed 'Bailing' while the Weavers completed 'Bearing'.
7. Leg 9 took teams to Utah. How many teams completed the 'Drop Down' Detour task at Bull Canyon?

Answer: Three

In Leg 9, teams headed out of Arizona and into Utah. Reaching the Gemini Bridges in Moab, Utah (near Arches National Park), teams found a Detour task consisting of the 'Drop Down' and 'Ride Down' choices. In 'Drop Down', teams needed to rappel 270ft into Bull Canyon on a two-stage course along the cliffsides.

In 'Ride Down', teams needed to ride six miles along a course into Bull Canyon to reach the clue box. The Linz, Bransen, and Godlewski families finished 'Drop Down' while the Weavers completed 'Ride Down'.

After the Detour, the four teams continued to Green River State Park where they spent the night.
8. In the first half of Leg 10, teams chose to either 'Spike It' or 'Steam It'. Which team chose to 'Spike It'?

Answer: All three of these teams

Arriving at Heber Valley Railway in Heber City, Utah, teams needed to choose between two locomotive-themed tasks, 'Spike It' and 'Steam It'. In 'Spike It', teams needed to use provided tools and items to recreate twenty feet of railroad before receiving their next clue. Those completing 'Steam It' instead were required to shovel four hundred pounds of coal into the tender of a steam engine train before finding their next destination: the Bonneville Salt Flats and the Tree of Utah.

The Weavers were the only family to complete 'Steam It'.
9. The first half of Leg 11 took teams to Montreal. What did teams completing the 'Roll It' Detour task need to roll?

Answer: Logs

Finding a clue at the Square-Victoria Metro Station in Montreal, the remaining three teams were given the Detour task, a choice between 'Slide It' and 'Roll It'. In 'Slide It', teams needed to travel to the McGill University Arena and each member needed to glide a curling stone into the target (or the house) to receive their clue.

In 'Roll It', teams needed to travel to McGill University's Morgan Arboretum and partake in log-rolling, pushing four logs along a hundred foot course. The Weaver and Linz families chose the former task while the Bransens chose the latter.

After the Detour, teams found their next clue at the Montreal Biosphere, also known as the American Pavilion of Expo 67.
10. Finding a clue on Toronto's waterfront, teams began their final Detour task (in Leg 11's last half). How many teams finished the 'Shoe' Detour choice?

Answer: One

In Leg 11, teams made their way to Toronto, Ontario and inevitably found their final Detour task, a choice between 'Ship' and 'Shoe'. 'Ship', completed by the Weaver and the Linz family, required that teams board a sailboat and locate a ship in Toronto Harbour known as the Kajama, then climb the mast to collect their clue. 'Shoe', completed by the Bransen family, took the team to the Bata Shoe Museum in Downtown Toronto and match a pair of shoes to the unique feet of one of a hundred models. Getting the correct match would result in their clue.

After the Detour was completed, teams could drive to the Queenston Boat Ramp near Niagara Falls to receive their next clue.
