Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Christmas edition saw the first appearance of Cora's brother, Harold Levinson. Which actor played the role?

Answer: Paul Giamatti

Although he was regularly mentioned during series four of 'Downton Abbey', notably following his involvement in the 'Teapot Dome Scandal', this was Harold's first appearance on screen. He and Cora's mother had travelled to London as Lady Rose was due to be presented at court, which gave the Americans a chance to meet the Royal family. Paul Giamatti has appeared in many television series, including 'The Show' in 1996 and '30 Rock' in 2010.

His film credits include 'Romeo and Juliet' (2013), in which he played Friar Laurence and 'Cinderella Man' (2005).

He also appeared as Sergeant Hill in 'Saving Private Ryan' in 1998 alongside all the actors listed as options.
2. Evidence of Bates's possible involvement in the death of Mr Green was discovered during the show. Which character destroyed it?

Answer: Lady Mary

Anna gave an old jacket to Mrs Hughes, who discovered a train ticket in the pocket, proving that Bates had travelled to London on the day of Green's death, when he had told everyone he had been to York. Mrs Hughes took it to Lady Mary, saying that she thought that Bates had had every right to defend Anna's honour, and that the ticket did not prove that Bates had killed Green.

After some misgivings, eventually, Mary threw the ticket in the fire. Neither Anna nor Lord Grantham were aware of the ticket's existence.
3. David, the Prince of Wales, featured throughout the show. Which other member of the Royal family appeared in a speaking role?

Answer: King George V

Since the debutantes, including Lady Rose, were to be presented at court it was King George V who took centre stage, although his wife, Queen Mary, was also shown and the Prince of Wales was present as well. The king was portrayed by Guy Williams and Oliver Dimsdale played the Prince of Wales, who was later to become Edward VIII, the king who abdicated the throne.

The Duke of York would eventually succeed his brother, becoming King George VI, but did not feature in the show - nor did either of the other two options.
4. Lady Edith returned from her stay in Switzerland having given birth to a baby girl.

Answer: True

Poor Edith had been forced to leave her daughter in Switzerland to ensure her secret was kept. It would have been scandalous at the time for an unmarried woman to give birth to an illegitimate child. The baby's father, Michael Gregson, was still missing although Edith had discovered a little more, having been told that he had become involved in a fracas on his first night in Germany.

By the end of the show, Edith had made the momentous decision to bring the baby back to England to be cared for by one of the tenants of Downton Abbey, a situation likely to lead to further complications.
5. Bates proved that his time in prison was not wasted by displaying his talents at forgery and which other criminal activity?

Answer: Pickpocketing

A letter written by the Prince of Wales to his mistress had been stolen by the villain and card sharp from series four, Sampson. Lord Grantham, Rose and Mary become involved in an attempt to retrieve the letter, thus saving the monarchy from the scandal of the affair becoming known or the potential of Sampson attempting to blackmail the Prince. Lord Grantham asked Bates to arrange a forged letter to enable Rose and Mary to gain access to Sampson's rooms, where they failed to find the incriminating document. Bates saved the day by extracting the letter from Sampson's jacket pocket while helping him into his overcoat.

It was this action that prompted the decision to destroy the incriminating railway ticket.
6. Although several potential romances were in the air during the show, only one character actually received a marriage proposal. Which of these was the 'lucky' lady?

Answer: Martha Levinson

Both Lady Mary's suitors were around, with Tony Gillingham, rather sportingly, telling her that Charles Blake was the heir to a grand estate and was even more eligible than Gillingham himself. Isobel was still being pursued by Lord Merton, but doing her best to avoid him and Molesley was still being supportive of Miss Baxter without any signs of romance.

The welcome return of James Fox as Lord Aysgarth led to two romances as he pushed his daughter, Madeline, towards Harold Levinson while at the same time pursuing Martha himself.

His proposal was summarily dismissed by the lady, however, who valued her independence far too much.
7. Which character was asked to go to America to cook for the Levinson family?

Answer: Daisy

Harold Levinson had found himself surprisingly fond of English food, leading his valet, who had shown some personal interest in Daisy, to offer her the chance to travel to America as the family's cook. Daisy decided against the offer, giving the other kitchen maid, Ivy, the chance to jump in and ask to be taken on instead. Alfred did not appear in the show, although it was mentioned that he had been taken on permanently at the Ritz while Molesley has shown no interest in cooking.
8. Which mistress of the Prince of Wales was featured in the Christmas Special?

Answer: Freda Dudley Ward

It was Freda Dudley Ward, played by Janet Montgomery, who appeared in the show, portraying a real life mistress of the real Prince of Wales. It was the letter the Prince had written to her which Sampson stole from her handbag. Lady Furness was another of the real Prince's mistresses and Wallis Simpson became his wife. Lillie Langtry was also a Royal mistress, but to an earlier Prince of Wales, the one who became King Edward VII.
9. As a reward to the staff, Lady Grantham asked Carson to arrange a day out for them all. Where did he take them?

Answer: Seaside

Carson had suggested visits to all the places listed, with his ideas of trips to the National History and Science Museums or the other places listed not being met with enthusiasm. He eventually decided that a seaside trip was the best option, and this met with the approval of Mrs Hughes.

The trip led to a scene where Carson and Mrs Hughes were paddling in the waves with her holding his hand for support - an incident which was not unnoticed by the other members of staff. Is romance on the cards?
10. During the ball at the end of the show, Branson, rather unexpectedly, offered his services as a dance partner to which character?

Answer: Violet

Tom Branson had featured earlier in the show, when he introduced Sarah Bunting, his teacher friend, to Lady Violet who still hadn't broken her habit of calling him by his surname (befitting his previous status as the chauffeur) instead of his first name, as a family member. Sarah asked Tom to show her around the house only for the villainous Thomas to find them (innocently) upstairs. Thomas wasted no time in informing Lord Grantham of this, preparing the ground for further repercussions.

At the ball, Violet gave Tom another pep talk about the Crawleys now being his family, before accepting his offer of a dance.

This enabled her to say 'at least I know you can steer'.
