Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Gary's first wife named?

Answer: Marcia

Gary's wife, Marcia, dumped him in season one, in the first episode - right on their anniversary - for undisclosed reasons. She had just finished law school, and he was working as a stock broker. Gary quit his job and then went to go stay at the Blackstone Hotel (an actual place).
2. What color markings did the cat have that brought the paper?

Answer: A tabby

The cat was an orange tabby, who at six-thirty every morning would somehow deliver the paper to Gary's front door and then go inside to eat, to just disappear a little later... until the next day.

The cat, who was just called 'Cat' or 'The Cat' on the show, was actually given a name by the writers of the show. The writers named the character 'Carl.' The cat, AKA Carl, was played by several cats during the show's four year run.
3. What was Chuck's last name?

Answer: Fishman

Fisher Stevens played Chuck Fishman, Gary's quirky but lovable best friend. Chuck wanted to use the paper to make money off of the lottery and race tracks, but Gary only did on rare occasions. Chuck left in season two, to go be a movie producer (and guest starred in three more episodes later on).

The real reason Chuck left was because the actor portraying him, Fisher Stevens, wanted to move on and do different projects.
4. Which word would NOT describe Marissa?

Answer: Deaf

Marissa had meningitis as a sixteen-month-old baby, that left her blind. Meningitis can also leave one deaf, but was not the case with Marissa. She bought her first seeing eye dog with money Gary won for her, by using the paper.

Actress Shanesia Davis-Williams, who played Marissa, visited a blind school to learn how to carry herself and her eyes as a blind person. She pulled off the part remarkably well, with some viewers thinking she really was blind.
5. Where was McGinty's located?

Answer: The corner of Illinois and Franklin street

What really sat there while the show was being made was an old carpet store, but the viewers who didn't live in Chicago didn't necessarily know that, making the illusion just perfect.

After The Blackstone Hotel burned down, Gary wound up being the owner of McGinty's bar, where he hired Chuck as co-owner and Marissa as manager.
6. What was the first episode called?

Answer: Pilot

Like many other shows, the first episode was called "Pilot", with the other episodes listed soon following. The first episode showed how Gary first started getting the paper, a phenomenon never thoroughly explained to Gary or us, the viewers.
7. Finish the quote; "Gary, an apartment building is about to burn down and you're going to stop for a ____?"

Answer: latte

A favorite episode of many, "Fate" was an episode that made more than one viewer shed tears. Gary accidentally let a homeless man die, and the guilt raged in Gary throughout the episode. The episode ended with Gary sobbing and nearly dying, with a revelation from Lucious Snow, who told him to "Count the living, not the dead, Gary".

The line I gave was from the beginning of the episode, when Gary was on a date with his girlfriend, Erica. He wanted to stop for a coffee, when he only had forty-five minutes before an apartment building would catch on fire. Erica quickly talked some sense into the lovestruck Gary.
8. In "Faith", what did Rachel say Gary's alias was?

Answer: Elmer Fudd

"Faith" was one of my favorites. In "Faith", Gary got hit by a car, and while he suffered little trauma, in the hospital he met an eleven-year-old girl named Rachel, who needed a heart transplant. In the end, Gary had to choose between Rachel's life, and a gangster's life.

Rachel told her mom that "his name is Elmer Fudd - it's an alias. He's with the witness protection program. The crime he witnessed is just too horrible to even think about".
9. In "Everybody Goes To Rick's", what historic event was taking place?

Answer: The St. Valentine's Day Massacre

The St. Valentine's Day Massacre happened in Chicago in 1929. Quite simply put, a gang led by Al Capone and a gang led by Bugs Moran began fighting, leading to the death of seven people.

Gary went down into the basement of McGinty's and messed with the fuse box. Getting shocked, he woke up in the 1929 version of the basement, complete with a change of clothes. From there, he followed the paper's changes, trying to stop the shootings.
10. Why did Gary give the pocketknife to Lindsay?

Answer: So that she would someday get the paper

In the episode "Time", Gary discovered that Lucious Snow, the man who had received the paper before him, had not only saved his life, but given him the pocketknife (with Gary's initials on it) when he was eleven. It was a way of "passing the torch". When Lucious Snow died, Gary began receiving the paper. So Gary gave the pocketknife to Lindsay, so that when Gary died, Lindsay would start getting the paper (when he gave the pocketknife to Lindsay, the initials on the pocketknife magically changed to Lindsay's initials).
