Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The regular series was meant to be a direct continuation of the 5 specials. But in another way it can be viewed that the specials were treated more like a pilot as actors, plot points and the direction of characters all changed. One change was made in order to make Hercules a traditional wandering hero and remove his ties to his family. in the first episode "The Wrong Path" Hera kills off Hercules's wife and children. What method did she employ for this?

Answer: Fireball

In the original myth Hercules kills his own wife and kids after being driven mad by Hera. This led to him performing the 12 labors of Hercules as penance. Hercules' partner Ioalus also had his wife written out but that could be argued to have happened in the TV specials.
2. The second episode "Eye of the Beholder" revolved around a monster who was terrorizing the town of Trachis. In one of the early appearances by the monster he comes across a woman of the village picking flowers and not acting afraid of the monster. This was done as an homage to the monster in the movie "Frankenstein". What kind of monster was in the episode?

Answer: Cyclops

The Cyclops was played by Richard Moll, most famous for his role as Bull of "Night Court" fame.
3. In addition to incorporating Greek mythology the show often utilized Greek drama as well. In "The Road to Calydon," a character from the "Oedipus" trilogy makes the first of many guest appearances. Who was it?

Answer: Tiresias

In the tale of "Oedipus," it is Tiresias that informs him that he is the one who has brought down the gods anger by unwittingly killing his father and marrying his mother. Although this was his most prominent characterization he would show up as a bearer of bad fortune in many tales.
4. During the episode "Ares" a new female character introduced that was meant to serve as a female counterpart to Hercules. Perhaps it was destiny that the actress got the role as she was a multi time Ms Olympia winner. What role did this statuesque beauty play on the show?

Answer: Atalanta

Cory Everson was a six time undefeated Ms Olympia from 1984 to 89. She retired as the only undefeated female in professional competition. Atalanta in myth was a skilled hunter and extremely fast runner.
5. Seems that Hercules cant even go to a wedding without causing trouble. In "As Darkness Falls," Hercules is in attendance at the wedding party of an old friend Penelope. Unfortunately, he is not the only guest as a pack of centaurs are also guests and one in particular Nemis wants Hercules dead. Noemi's has a number of reasons for wanting Hercules dead, but which is not one of them?

Answer: money

He wants revenge for the death of his brother Nessus by Hercules. He also wants to curry the favor of Hera in order to win the hand of Penelope for himself.
6. For a show that revolved around the gods and myths of Greek myth, they were sorely lacking in the first season. In the episode "Pride Comes Before a Brawl," the only season one appearance of a god in their human form occurred. What was the name of this lesser god in the show?

Answer: Nemesis

Nemesis was the spirit of divine retribution for those who committed the sins of hubris, excessive pride or vanity. In this case, it was a combination of Ioalus's self confidence and Hera wanting to hurt Hercules that led to the assignment of this task.
7. One thing the series had was the uncanny ability to get actors to guest star right before they became big. In the episode "The March to Freedom," Lucy Liu guest stars as an Asian princess. In the episode, she is looking to free her betrothed from practitioners of what vile practice?

Answer: slavery

This is a very common motif on the show. Of all the bad things that Hercules encounters during the course of the show, slavery is the one that seems to raise his hackles the most. He will go out of his way to aid people who are enslaved and works to end the practice whenever he encounters it.
8. Hercules had one successful spin off, that of "Xena: Warrior Princess". In Xena's first appearance she wanted to kill Hercules so no one else would dare challenge her. During the course of the episode "The Warrior Princess," an event happened that was considered totally out of character for the show. It would never happen again and the concept of it would be repudiated in many episodes both before and after. What event was this?

Answer: Hercules and Ioalus's friendship was broken

Kevin Sorbo in both commentary and interviews stated that this was one of his least favorite episodes as it makes no sense. The friendship between Hercules and Ioalus was defined as so strong that no women, not even Xena, should have been able to come between them.

In later episodes, each would find love but it was never anything that would come between them. The other events, although rare on the show, did happen and were not considered abnormal.
9. Before Lucy Lawless was cast as Xena, she played a number of different roles on the show. By the end of the first season, how many appearances had Lucy made, including the TV specials?

Answer: 5

Lucy played Lysia in "Hercules and the Amazon Women", Lyla in "As Darkness Falls" and Xena three times in "The Warrior Princess", "The Gauntlet" and "Unchained Heart".
10. In the city of Tantalus, bodies of the dead are being stolen on both sides of a civil conflict. Which god is behind these disappearances in order to prolong the conflict?

Answer: Ares

He stole the bodies with a two-fold purpose. First, he made each side believe the other side were the grave robbers and secondly it allowed him to feed his hell-hound Graegus. The more he ate, the larger he got till even Hercules would have been unable to stop him.
