Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first TV special, "Hercules and the Amazon Women," what actress, famous for another supernatural role, played Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons?

Answer: Roma Downey

Roma Downey would go on to play Tess on the much beloved series "Touched by an Angel" shortly after this part. In the actual mythology, Hercules encountered Hippolyta on one of his labors and she willingly gave up the magical girdle he came for after falling in love with him.
2. Which actor/actress, who would later go on to have a reoccurring character in the 'Hercules' universe, did not play another character during the five original made for TV specials?

Answer: Kevin Smith

Lucy Lawless played Lysia in "Hercules and the Amazon Women" and went on to play Xena. Renee (Gabrielle) and Robert (Salmoneus) both appeared in "Hercules and the Lost Kingdom" as Deianaira (not to be confused with the Deianaira who would marry Hercules) and Waylan respectively.

The woman who played the queen in "Hercules and the Lost Kingdom" would also go onto play Alcemene, Hercules's mother in the show. Kevin Smith would play Ares.
3. In the second special, "Hercules and the Lost Kingdom," what ancient civilization is referred to in the title?

Answer: Troy

The kingdom became lost because the king was unwilling to sacrifice his daughter to Hera. The story is set some time before the events that led to the Trojan war as revealed in later episodes.
4. What sexy actress assumed the part of Deianeira, Hercules's future wife, in "Hercules and the Circle of Fire"?

Answer: Tawny Kitaen

Tawny is perhaps best know for her time dating Whitesnake lead singer David Coverdale and Ratt guitarist Robbin Crosby and co-hosting "America's Funniest People" with Dave Coulier. When the regular series commenced, she was written out but she popped up a few more times in the afterlife to deliver messages to Hercules.
5. When fire begins to vanish around the world in "Hercules and the Circle of Fire", what godly being does Hercules first pay a visit to in order to find out what happened?

Answer: Prometheus

Prometheus was a Titan who defied the Olympian gods and stole fire to give to humans in Greek myth. For this crime, he was chained to a rock and had his organs pecked out each day by buzzards. In the myth, he was eventually rescued by Hercules. In the show, he was shown as frozen alive by Hera after the fire was taken.
6. In the fourth special, "Hercules in the Underworld," Hercules is challenged by a murderous fighter named Eryx the boxer. What monstrous pro wrestler went down in that role?

Answer: Jorge Gonzalez

Jorge Gonzalez was a 7'7" basketball player turned wrestler who appeared under the names El Gigante (WCW) and Giant Gonzalez (WWF). Due to knee problems, he was forced out of the physical sports and eventually had to retire even from acting.
7. Although Hera troubles Hercules throughout the specials, she never makes an actual physical appearance. What is the only part of Hera ever seen?

Answer: eyes

Her eyes often appear in the sky accompanied by a scree-scree sound. The sound is an amped up cry of a peacock, which is her godly symbol.
8. One of the more important characters in advancing the plot during the specials was Hercules's father Zeus. What Academy Award winning actor played the role of the lovable lothario?

Answer: Anthony Quinn

Quinn won twice as Best Supporting actor first in 1952 for "Viva Zapata" and again in 1956 for "Lust for Life". He would reprise his role on the series, but in a much more limited basis.
9. The final special, "Hercules in the Maze of the Minotaur," was half clip show/half new footage. One of the clips shown was a reminiscence of Ioalus. What made this clip strange in it usage?

Answer: The action had been altered to not exist

Ioalus is reminiscing about past adventures and a clip is shown of Hercules and Ioalus fighting the Amazons from the first movie. The problem was that at the end of the fight Ioalus was killed and later in the movie Hercules asks Zeus to turn back time to prevent the death of Ioalus as well as a number of other innocent people.

This boon is granted and Hercules opts not to go on the quest to the Amazon village that starts it all. Because of this, Iaolus could not possibly have know about this event as it never happened.
10. Although the series is based on the mythical tales of Hercules, oftentimes the tales of others heroes get added to his own in order to pad his resume. Which monster had his origin changed from legend so that not only did Hercules battle him, but that he was also related to Hercules?

Answer: Minotaur

The minotaur was slain by Theseus in the tales. His origin was also changed for this story. Originally, the minotaur was the result of a union between the Queen of Crete and a white bull. In this story, the minotaur was originally a human and a son of Zeus.

He tried to get the people to turn on the gods but was defeated. Zeus, unable to kill his own son, transformed him and imprisoned him hoping for him to be forgotten.
