Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Early in season 3 Salmoneus decides to open a wax museum featuring the horrors of the world, many of which Hercules has battled. One of the exhibits wasn't a mere waxwork and came to life. What classic monster battled Hercules?

Answer: Mummy

The episode entitled "Mummy Dearest" was one of the first to stray outside the typical Greek themes of the show. Some of the creatures from the Hercules/Xena universe on display included the Minotaur, Proteus, Bacchus, Echinda, Orpheus and the Cyclops.
2. In the episode "Green-Eyed Monster" Aphrodite's jealousy leads to love blossoming between two characters. What classic love story does this episode relate?

Answer: Eros and Psyche

Eros is the son of Aphrodite and encounters Psyche due to Aphrodite's jealousy of her. She orders Eros to make Psyche fall in love with someone quite disgusting but Eros falls in love with psyche instead. The title refers to not only the concept of jealously but that Eros has a curse that actually changes him into that if he loves a mortal. Ultimately Aphrodite accepts their union and makes Psyche a god so they can be together. The story of Pygmalion and Galatea is similar to Pinocchio in that both creators want their perfect creations to come alive. Both Hero and Leander and Pyramus and Thisbe are believed to have influenced Shakespeare's masterpiece "Romeo and Juliet".

In the end of both a mistaken death of one lover leads to both deaths in the end.
3. Continuing the broadening of the Hercules mythos to include other stories in episode nine of season three the bible is brought into play. What story is related in the course of the show?

Answer: The Nativity Story

Ioalus and two other men are given visions that lead them to a kingdom where the King has learned of a fearful prophecy. he learns that his reign will be ended by the birth of new born child. under the urging of his wife he has all young children rounded up and plans to exterminate them.

In the end the king is killed and the queen exiles. At the end of the episode Ioalus and the two other men follow a star to a stable where they see a figure intended to be the new born Jesus Christ.
4. Hercules's spin off, "Xena:Warrior Princess", stole a lot of Hercules' characters for use in her early seasons. In the episode "Surprise" Hercules returned the favor by returning what villain from the dead to destroy Hercules?

Answer: Callisto

The episode revolves around the friends and family of Hercules trying to give him a surprise party. Guests include Ioalus, Falafel, Alcemene and his brother Iphicles(in his last appearance before Kevin Smith assumed the role of Ares). Callisto poisons all the guests inside forcing Hercules to accompany here to the tree of life in order to cure them. Callisto has an ulterior motive as well, she hopes to gain immortality by eating from the tree.
5. In the episode "Encounter" Hercules meets the Golden Hind and falls in love with her human half. By what name does the human half go?

Answer: Serena

The actress, Sam Jenkins, who played Serena had had a previous role as another character who was "married" to Hercules. In the episode "Prince Hercules" she pretended to be the wife of an amnesiac Hercules in a plot for Hera. Evidentially all these parts prepared her for the real thing as Sam would go on to marry Kevin Sorbo in real life.
6. The Golden Hind trilogy was a turning point for the show. New characters came in while others faded away. The most notable addition was Kevin Smith as Ares. But alongside him a fellow familiarly related god debuted. Which descriptively named god was this?

Answer: Strife

Due to the positive response to Ares he replaced Hera as the main villain in the series. The trilogy also marked the final appearance of Hercules's first wife Daineria as Hercules visits her in the underworld to gain permission to marry Serena.
Pain and Panic were the sidekicks of Hades in Disney's "Hercules". Discord would replace Strife later on as the second in command of Ares and was played by Meighan Desmond.
7. During season three the show tried a very different episode. It featured none of the regular cast appearing in character, except in flashback clips. Instead the main cast played regular men in the far future who become inspired by the stories of Hercules. In what time period was the episode set?

Answer: France 1789

The episode entitled "Les Contemptibles" starred Kevin "Hercules" Sorbo as Robert, Michael "Ioalus" Hurst as Jean-Pierre and Robert "Salmoneus" Trebor as Count Francois Demarigny. They play con artists who try to trick women out of their money by pretending to be the Chartreuse Fox, a Robin Hood like freedom fighter.

In the end they are actually swayed by the stories they have been telling about Hercules and come to the aid of the real Fox when she is about to be executed.
8. In the episode "Reign of Terror" Hercules returns to the site of one of his famous Labors. Which labor is revisited when he goes to confront an insane ruler?

Answer: Augean stables

His only encounter with Hippolyta occurred in the early movie "Hercules and the Amazon Women" and there was no girdle involved. In this episode the king's insanity causes him to do things that are not the best for his people. He believes he is Zeus at the time and Hera uses this to her advantage by giving him powers and convincing him to kill Hercules.

By the end of the episode the king is cured of this insanity but now believes he is the sea voyager Ulysses.
9. In the episode "The End of the Beginning", Hercules is sent back in time by the chrono-stone. He tries to walk a fine line in order to avoid changing the past, which is made that much harder by his traveling companion. What series regular was also sucked back in time with Hercules?

Answer: Autolycus

Autolycus had stolen the stone in the present day and goes back in time to escape Hercules. In the process the stone is broken and he has to steal it again alongside his younger counterpart. He questions the time paradox that this will create but Hercules just brushes it off.

Hercules despite his caution to Autolycus to not interfere anymore than stealing the stone breaks that advice twice. First he saves a boy that was supposed to fall down a well and die. Second he encounters the Golden Hind. He first tries to get her to no follow Ares.

When that fails Hercules is able to force Ares into separating the human side of Serena from the hind. He does this despite the fact that it means that their future together will never happen.
10. The show has always been good at finding great talents before they became big and in the season three finale "Atlantis" it happened again. What was the name of this attractive future sci-fi star?

Answer: Claudia Black

Claudia went on to play Aeryn Sun on "Farscape" and Vala Mal Doran on "Stargate SG-1". In the episode she played the characters of Cassandra who, like her mythological counterpart, was cursed with the ability to foretell the future but no one would believe her.

She saw the destruction of Atlantis but was mocked for telling people. In the end she was the only survivor of the island as she sailed off with Hercules and a number of sailors who had been imprisoned as slaves.
