Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is a TV series is set in Cicely, Alaska (population 215)?

Answer: Northern Exposure

The series, which would win Golden Globes for "Best Television Series - Drama" in 1992 and 1993, first aired in 1990 and starred Rob Morrow, Janine Turner, and Barry Corbin. It focusses on a newly graduated doctor, Dr. Joel Fleischman played by Morrow, who is required to set up a practice in Cicely. The humour within the series arises from a quirky set of characters and their idiosyncrasies along with the culture clashes between Dr Fleischman's New York upbringing and the remoteness of the town he winds up in.

This question was exposed by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19.
2. Which "Law & Order: SVU" detective (2011-2015) also starred as a detective in "Cold Case" from 2003-2010?

Answer: Danny Pino

Danny Pino played Detective Scotty Valens on "Cold Case" before becoming Detective Nick Amaro on "Law & Order: SVU". "Cold Case" followed Detective Valens and his partner Lilly Rush, played by Kathryn Morris, as they tried to solve murder cases that were no longer active for the Philadelphia Police Department. Kathryn Morris never appeared in "Law & Order: SVU".

Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni both starred in "Law & Order: SVU" but never appeared in "Cold Case".

This question came to light under intense interrogation by Phoenix Rising member tazman6619.
3. The 1996 movie featured Frances McDormand as Police Chief Marge Gunderson, but in the 2014 TV series of the same name, she is replaced by Deputy Molly Solverson. What is the name of this series?

Answer: Fargo

The television series was inspired by the Coen brothers' film from 1996 and they (the Coen brothers) have assisted with the series, receiving a credit as executive producers. Billy Bob Thornton stars as the main protagonist alongside Allison Tolman's Deputy Solverson (what a great name for a police officer). Season one opens with a wintery day and Lorne Malvo (Thornton) crashing his car on the highway trapping him in the town. As we progress, we discover that Malvo is a hitman with a violent nature. Solverson, who is pursuing Malvo, graduates to Police Chief by season's end.

This question was fired at you by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19.
4. In the Season 7 "M*A*S*H" episode "Baby, It's Cold Outside", Klinger suffers what ill effects after a mine explosion?

Answer: Temporary deafness

In the middle of a freezing snap in South Korea, soldiers are being brought in with frostbite and hypothermia on top of their war injuries. While on guard duty, Klinger's hearing is affected by the nearby mines exploding with the cold. The deafness wears off eventually, but until it does Klinger laments all the things he will not hear again, like "the thwack of a cue stick breaking over some guy's head." Meanwhile, the rest of the camp are thrilled by watching Sonja Henie twirling around the ice in the movie showing that night.

This question was warmed up Phoenix Rising Member VegemiteKid.
5. In the TV special "Ice Age: a Mammoth Christmas", which one of the following characters is not a mammoth?

Answer: Sid

In 2011, "Ice Age: a Mammoth Christmas" premiered and followed the gang as they set out to save Christmas after almost destroying it. Manny, played by Ray Romano, is one of the stars of the franchise and is a woolly mammoth. He is married to Ellie, played by Queen Latifah, and Peaches, played by Ciara Bravo in this special, is their daughter. Sid is the only one who is not a mammoth. He is a ground sloth and is played by John Leguizamo.

This question was defrosted by Phoenix Rising member tazman6619.
6. The disturbing 2019 documentary "Children of the Snow" deals with which of the following subjects?

Answer: Child abduction

Narrated by Jacqueline Bynon, this four part miniseries investigates the abduction and murder of four children in Oakland County, a little northwest of Detroit, Michigan. The events occurred between February 1976 and March 1977. All four of the children, aged between ten and twelve years, were laid out in a similar manner, in the snow and in plain sight, after they were killed. The killer, dubbed the Oakland County Child Killer, to that point, had not been found.

This chilling question was sombrely brought to you by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19.
7. In 2007, the History Channel introduced a reality show called "Ice Road Truckers" featuring actual truck drivers who drove their huge trucks over frozen lakes, rivers, and ice-bound roads. Where was this show filmed?

Answer: Alaska and Canada

This show lasted for twelve seasons until 2017. The public were fascinated with actual drivers who carted huge payloads with their semi-trailers to remote Canadian and Alaskan communities during winter. The routes were dangerous, over frozen rivers and lakes as well as icy narrow roads. There were no major accidents in the twelve season span of the show.

Writing this question made team member 1nn1 shiver. Being from the sub-tropics on the other side of the planet, his idea of cold is eating an ice cream.
8. Which of these television shows uses the cold state of Alaska as its primary setting?

Answer: Men in Trees

First aired in 2006, "Men in Trees" is set in the fictional town of Elmo, Alaska. It was created by Jenny Bicks and stars Anne Heche as the relationship coach who stumbles between relationships, Marin Frist. Frist is also a bestselling author who has ventured to Elmo for a conference on "real love". While she's there, however, her "real love" breaks up with her and leaves her stranded in Elmo where she is stuck with a town that is full of... available men. All of the other shows above are set in San Diego.

The author that is related to this question is pollucci19.
9. In the HBO series "Game of Thrones", the White Walkers are creatures made of ice who live north of the Wall. They are vulnerable to what weapon?

Answer: Dragonglass

In "A Storm of Swords" (2000) Samwell Tarly kills one using dragonglass, a form of obsidian. The White Walker's blood was pale blue and as he died he slowly dissolved until nothing was left but the dragonglass dagger. When Samwell tried to pick it up, he quickly dropped it again because the dagger was so cold.

This question was divulged to Phoenix Rising member tazman6619 from Jon Snow himself.
10. Who is the star of the Looney Tunes animated short "Hare Force" (1944)?

Answer: Bugs Bunny

This seven-minute short released by Warner Bros features three characters in Bugs Bunny, Granny and, Sylvester, though this Sylvester is a dog rather than a cat. It is cold and it is snowing. Bugs is shivering but manages to con his way into Granny's good graces and is invited into the house to sit by the fire. Unfortunately for Bugs, this doesn't sit well with Sylvester, and what follows is each tricking the other into getting out of the house, being locked out, and then finding their way back in. This carries on until Granny gets fed up with it all and threatens to kick both of them out. Bugs and Sylvester then make up and join forces to kick Granny out.

Your timbers have just been shivered by this question from pollucci19.
