Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What race is Doctor Phlox?

Answer: Denobulan

In the episode "The Catwalk", the crew have to all congregate in the nacelles to escape the radiation in the region. Whilst they are inside, Phlox comments that it reminds him of his home planet, Denobula, where 12 billion people all occupy a single continent.

Question by Daddy19
2. How many wives did Dr. Phlox have?

Answer: 3

Phlox had three wives, and each of his three wives also had three husbands (Phlox being one of the three for each of them). All told, that meant there were 720 possible relationships, 42 of which had romantic possibilities. Within that relational group, there were 31 children, five of which were Phlox's.

3. In the episode, "A Night in Sickbay," Captain Archer's dog, Porthos, was very sick and Archer decided to spend the night in sickbay with him to keep him company and because he missed him. Little did Archer know what he was in for spending the night with Dr. Phlox in sickbay! What was NOT one of the activities of Dr. Phlox that prevented Archer from getting much sleep?

Answer: Dr. Phlox singing opera

Hopefully "Star Trek" fans remembered it was actually The Doctor from "Star Trek: Voyager" who sang opera keeping Captain Janeway awake when they were traveling on a shuttlecraft together.

This episode really makes me laugh so is one of my favorites of "Enterprise." Who can ever forget Dr. Phlox's personal grooming of clipping his really long unsightly toenails and scraping his very long tongue (truly cringe worthy but funny). Both of which made noises which woke up Archer. And who can forget Archer and Phlox's hilarious attempts to recapture an escaped bat. And as pointed out in the information section of another question Phlox kept a menagerie of animals in Sickbay used for developing medical treatments. Phlox's feeding of them woke Archer up. Phlox commented the animals are demanding when they know he is in Sickbay.

4. In the second-season episode "A Night in Sickbay", Dr. Phlox performed on operation to save the life of Captain Archer's dog, Porthos. Dr. Phlox replaced Porthos' pituitary gland with that of what creature?

Answer: A Calrissian chameleon

Dr. Phlox kept a menagerie of animals in his sickbay, from which he gained medications to treat many different illnesses and conditions. The Calrissian chameleon not only provided a compatible pituitary gland for Captain Archer's beagle, but it had also been used to provide a rare toxin capable of treating respiratory infections.

After the surgery on Porthos, Dr. Phlox joked that the beagle would now have the ability to blend into its surroundings.

Question by reedy
5. A human crewmember actively pursued Dr. Phlox for a romantic relationship.

Answer: True

This is true! Elizabeth Cutler, an entomologist, was very interested in Dr. Phlox in a romantic way. Not even when Phlox revealed he was already married with three wives was she put off!

Sadly the actress who portrayed Crewman Elizabeth Cutler, Kellie Waymire, died at the young age of 36 from undiagnosed heart problems. If this actress had continued in her role of Elizabeth Cutler perhaps more serious relationship would have developed between Phlox and her. This talented actress also appeared in the episode "Muse" of "Star Trek: Voyager."

6. When the crew of the Enterprise encountered a black hole that affected everyone adversely, causing various obsessive behaviours, Dr. Phlox almost performed a major surgery on a patient suffering only from a headache. Who was the patient?

Answer: Ensign Mayweather

The episode in question was entitled "Singularity". Some other memorable obsessive behaviours exhibited by the crew included Commander Tucker continually making alterations to the Captain's chair, trying to perfect it for the Captain's comfort, Captain Archer getting caught up in trying to find the wording for a biography of his father, Hoshi cooking the same meal over and over again, and Lt. Reed obsessing about his new Security Protocol.

Question by reedy
7. What was the name of the Doctor who corresponded with Phlox and who was aboard Cold Station 12 when the Augments arrived to liberate their 'brothers and sisters'?

Answer: Doctor Jeremy Lucas

The role of Doctor Lucas was played by Richard Riehle, who had also appeared in the "Star Trek" universe as one of Picard/Kamin's friends, Batai, in "The Inner Light" as well as Seamus in the "Voyager" stories set in the holodeck village of Fair Haven.

The other names I made up.

Question by Daddy19
8. Over the seasons of "Star Trek: ENT" we learn interesting things about Dr. Phlox and his species. Which information below is true about Dr. Phlox and his species?

Answer: Though he required very little sleep, he has to hibernate for around six days.

We find out about Phlox's hibernation requirement in the episode "Dear Doctor." In the episode "Two Days and Two Nights," while the crew were on shore leave he engaged in a shortened hibernation cycle only to be woken early to attend to a medical emergency involving Mayweather.

It wasn't his eyes that got really big when Phlox. It was his mouth that become very wide when he smiled. His unique smile was shown on more than one episode. Dr. Phlox's eyes actually were almost shut to slits when he smiled.

I got the idea for the very high pitched sound when someone is startled or threatened from the "Farscape" character, Jool, whose high pitched scream could melt metal! Actually Phlox and members of his species had the ability to blow up their faces huge like some fish can when they are threatened.

In the episode "Regeneration," it was shown Dr. Phlox and members of his species have very strong immune systems. So strong was his immune system, Phlox was able to resist Borg nanoprobes that had invaded his body, until he underwent a dangerous treatment of high levels of radiation to get rid of them for good.

Question by christi_dove
9. Prior to serving aboard the Enterprise Dr. Phlox had never visited Earth.

Answer: False

This is false because he lived on Earth in San Francisco while working at Starfleet Medical. He came to love Chinese food. He was posted there for 6 months.

Question by christi_dove
10. Prior to boarding Enterprise, what organisation had Phlox joined?

Answer: Interspecies Medical Exchange

The memory-alpha.org website notes that the Interspecies Medical Exchange was set up by the Vulcans in the 2130s. As a result of this program, Phlox was working on Earth at the time that Klaang crashed near Broken Bow.

Phlox's knowledge of Klingon physiology when treating Klaang's wounds encouraged Jonathan Archer to offer him the position of Chief Medical Officer aboard Enterprise.

Question by Daddy19
11. What secondary role did Dr. Phlox eventually fill on the Enterprise?

Answer: Counselor

The first instance of Phlox being employed as a counselor was seen in the episode "Breaking the Ice". Subcommander T'Pol came to him to discuss her upcoming arranged marriage, which concerned her because it would mean that she would have to leave Starfleet immediately, and stay away for at least a year. Phlox advised her to share her information and concerns with someone (else) that she trusted, rather than keeping things bottled up inside.

Question by reedy
12. In the episode, "The Breach," we find out Phlox was estranged from one of his sons. What was the reason Phlox gave for this estrangement when he told a patient of his about his son to try and convince him to undergo a life-saving treatment?

Answer: His son's hatred for another alien race

The correct answer is of course "his son's hatred for another alien race." The other answer choices are made-up. If you haven't seen this powerful episode, I highly recommend it. Hudak was the name of an alien whose race, the Antarans, who at one time were at war with Phlox's people. A lot of ill will was still felt on both sides due to the atrocities of war. Hudak at first refused Phlox's treatment and it was only after Phlox's heartfelt story about the estrangement between him and his son, Mettus did he change his mind and consent to treatment. Though Phlox tried very hard with his children to keep them from learning to hate the Antarans, raising them differently than he had been raised, raising them to be open-minded and to not be influenced by propaganda and old stories, Mettus still fell in with the wrong crowd who wanted to keep the hatred for Antarans alive.

This pained Phlox deeply because as Phlox told Hudak, "I did my best to convince him he was mistaken. I told him I wouldn't tolerate the values he was embracing. It created a rift between us. Maybe I didn't do enough to reach him. Last time we spoke was nearly ten years ago. You wanted to know what my children would think if they were here now. I can tell you what Mettus would think. He would be happy to have me grant your request and let you die. But that is not the example I tried to set for my children. Why not live and set an example for yours?" (quote taken from Chakoteya.net (Chrissie's Transcripts Site) episode transcript for "The Breach" http://www.chakoteya.net/Enterprise/47.htm

At the end of the episode Phlox tried again to reach out to his son by recording a letter to him.

Question by christi_dove
13. An early fore-runner of the biobed, what was the main tool at Phlox's disposal within sickbay for the diagnosis of his patients?

Answer: Imaging Chamber

Unlike the biobeds subsequently seen on various "Star Trek" series, the patient would lie on the bed. This would then move the patient into the imaging chamber. The results of the scanner would then be visible to the attending doctor on the screen outside.

On one occasion, aliens were led to believe that Vulcan Ambassador V'Lar was inside the imaging chamber and as a result, they fired at the chamber in order to kill her. This turned out to be a stalling tactic to allow a Vulcan ship to arrive and the Ambassador was not in the imaging chamber.

Question by Daddy19
14. In the third-season episode "Similitude", Dr. Phlox created a clone of one of the injured crew members, in order to provide healthy organs to heal him. Phlox was faced with an ethical dilemma when 'Sim' learned of an enzyme that could extend his life beyond the only 15 days he was supposed to live. Which crew member's life was at stake?

Answer: Commander Tucker

The dilemma faced by Dr. Phlox was solved without Phlox having to make a tough decision - the life of 'Sim' or the life of Tucker. 'Sim' himself chose to make the sacrifice to allow Tucker to live.

Question by reedy
15. In the episode "The Crossing", non-corporeal beings are able to replace the consciousness of the crew of Enterprise. As a result the alien replacing Doctor Phlox tries to take over the ship.

Answer: False

The non-corporeal entities were unable to trade places with Doctor Phlox as their physiologies were incompatible. As a result of a mind meld, T'Pol learned of the aliens true intentions and Archer was able to devise a plan to protect the ship.
