Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Next Generation's" pilot episode, "Encounter at Farpoint", the Enterprise is on it's way to Farpoint, where some crew members are waiting to join the rest of the crew. Was Dr. Crusher among those waiting to be picked up?

Answer: Yes

Commander Riker and Lieutenant La Forge were also awaiting the arrival of the Enterprise, along with Dr. Crusher and her son Wesley. They were shocked to hear that only the Enterprise's stardrive section had arrived, but were soon informed of the interference by Q and their role in mankind's 'trial'.

Question by reedy
2. What rank was held by Doctor Beverly Crusher at the start of "TNG's" run on television?

Answer: Commander

Throughout "Encounter At Farpoint", you can see that Crusher has three pips on her collar, well when they're not obscured by her hair or her cardigan! The light, however, does make it difficult to see whether that third pip is full or not. The subsequent episode "The Naked Now", clearly shows her rank as Commander.

The Memory-Alpha website also notes that she achieved the rank of Commander in 2362, two years before she joined the crew of the Enterprise-D.

3. In the episode "True Q", it was discovered that a member of the crew (Amanda Rogers) was in reality the child of two former members of the Q continuum. Q (played by John DeLancie) came to mentor Rogers on the ways of the continuum. When Beverly objected, Q silenced her by turning her into an animal. What kind?

Answer: Dog

Dr. Crusher's transformation into a dog was short-lived. Rogers, using her new-found powers, restored her to her original self. In the end, Rogers decides to join the Q continuum.

Question by reedy
4. How did Beverly Crusher find out that Picard had feelings for her while her husband was still alive and they were married?

Answer: Through brain implants

Picard and Crusher were taken a prisoner by a xenophobic group of aliens, the, Prytt, who believed they were conspiring against them with their enemy, the Kes. Brain implants connected to their brain stems were implanted in both Picard and Crusher which could then be calibrated to their psi wave patterns so the Prytt could get information from them regarding the supposed conspiracy. With assistance they managed to escape and undertake a perilous journey on foot to a safe border.

During their travels Picard and Crusher were surprised to discover they were telepathically linked and can share each other's thoughts and feelings. To make matters even worse, they had to stay close together or become very ill. Needless to say they learned a lot about each other including the feelings Picard once had for Beverly long ago. He never acted on his feelings because she was married to his best friend.

5. As the Chief Medical Officer for the Enterprise, Dr. Crusher had to have a working knowledge of all the crew's medical needs, including the android Data. She gained much knowledge about Data's workings when she helped reconstruct Data's twin and predecessor. What was his name?

Answer: Lore

Lore was discovered on Omicron Theta, the location where Data was also discovered years previously. Their creator, Dr. Noonian Soong, had departed from Earth after originally failing to develop a working positronic brain, then continued his work at the Omicron Theta colony.

Lore had been developed by Soong with an emotion chip, and after Lore proved to be evil, Soong dismantled him and built Data without the capacity for emotion built in.

Question by reedy
6. True or False: During "TNG's" second season, Beverly Crusher was not Chief Medical Office of the Enterprise. Instead, she was Head of Starfleet Medical.

Answer: True

The second season episode "The Child" explains Crusher's appointment at Starfleet Medical as well as introducing her replacement, Doctor Katherine Pulaski (played by Diana Muldaur).

Crusher returned to the Enterprise-D for "TNGs" third series. The only comment made was that she was happy to be reunited with Wesley.

Question by Daddy19
7. In "Star Trek: Nemesis", Shinzon cut his own hand with a knife and gave the knife to Data so his blood could be tested to prove he was really a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Dr. Beverly Crusher examined Shinzon's blood and DNA and verified he was a clone. Later after further in-depth analysis of Shinzon's DNA she discovered something surprising and disturbing about this doppelganger of Picard's. He was dying and there was only one cure. What did Crusher say was the only cure for what was killing Shinzon?

Answer: A complete blood transfusion from Picard which would be fatal for the captain.

The reason Shinzon was dying is because the temporal RNA used in the cloning process for purposes of rapid aging was never activated which caused his cells to degrade. The Romulans at one time intended to replace Picard with his clone so temporal RNA was used to that rapid aging could occur so the clone could reach Picard's age quickly. A change in the Romulan government meant abandoning this plan and sent the young Shinzon into a life of slavery on Remus.

The cure was a complete transfusion of all Shinzon's blood and of course this meant Shinzon would be coming after Picard in order to get his blood.

I made up the other answers. Thalaron radiation was used by Shinzon to kill the members of the Romulan Senate because they rejected his proposal to unite his forces on Remus with the Romulan military in order to form the greatest military power in the Quadrant. Shinzon also turned his ship into a weapon using this radiation which could kill all life on Earth or anywhere else. Its use as a treatment for Shinzon's condition was never mentioned.

If you would like to learn more about the original Romulan plot to replace Picard , Shinzon's background, his assassination of the Romulan Senate, and his plan to destroy the Federation, please read the article, "Shinzon," on Memory-Alpha, or of course watch the movie!

8. In "Star Trek: First Contact" when the Borg are taking over sections of the Enterprise, Dr. Crusher is seen evacuating personnel from sickbay. How does she delay the Borg?

Answer: Activates the Emergency Medical Hologram

When Beverly activates the EMH, she leaves instructions for it to stall the impending Borg arrival; "Twenty Borg are about to break through that door. We need time to get out of here. Create a diversion."

The EMH (played by Robert Picardo) responds, "This isn't part of my programme. I'm a doctor, not a doorstop."

Beverly calls back, "Well do a dance. Tell a story. I don't care. Just give us a few seconds," as she leaves the room through a Jefferies tube.

Question by reedy
9. True or False: Beverly Crusher spent a period of time in command of the Enterprise-D.

Answer: True

In the two-part episode entitled "Descent", much of the ship's crew beamed down to search for Data. Picard left a skeleton crew aboard the Enterprise with Crusher in command.

Her command skills were put to good use when a Borg ship arrived and she had to develop a plan to defeat them.

Question by Daddy19
10. Was Doctor Crusher one of the three crew members who entered an authorisation code to initiate the autodestruct sequence for the Enterprise-E in the movie "First Contact"?

Answer: Yes

After the destruction of the deflector dish, the Borg began to take over the rest of the ship. Crusher agreed with Worf that they should set the autodestruct, however Picard was adamant they should defend the ship.

Lily likened Picard to Captain Ahab in "Moby Dick" and realising this was true, Picard relented and ordered the destruction of the ship. Crusher and Worf also provided their authorisation codes to approve the order.

Question by Daddy19
11. In the film "Star Trek: Insurrection" Data overheard Dr. Crusher having a conversation about the rejuvenating effects of the planet. With whom was she speaking?

Answer: Counselor Troi

The two women were discussing how their 'boobs' were firming up, which Data then repeated in a conversation with Worf. That was one of the many attempts to insert humor into the film, along with Worf reverting back to Klingon adolescent changes (large gorches on the face, and aggressive tendencies).

Question by reedy
12. Toward the beginning of "Star Trek: Generations" movie, the crew of the Enterprise were in period naval uniforms and on the holodeck on a recreation of an ocean sailing ship, named Enterprise of course, to celebrate Worf's promotion to Lieutenant Commander. Because Data expressed a desire to understand forms of humor better, Dr. Crusher tricked him into walking to the end of the plank and then gave the command to have the plank disappear so he fell into the very cold ocean water!

Answer: False

Actually it was Data who pushed Dr. Crusher in the water! Because she thought it was funny when Worf walked the plank, had to jump for his naval hat, caught it successfully but then fell into the ocean when Riker had the plank removed. It apparently was a tradition for this to happen during promotions. When Data asked her about why it was funny for Worf to fall in the water, she replied it was all in fun and one should do unexpected things! Data was just trying to oblige her and join in the fun when he pushed Dr. Crusher into the water, which also had the effect of knocking Worf back in too. La Forge informed Data it wasn't funny.

Question by christi_dove
13. What did Beverly have in common with generations of the Howard women?

Answer: The same lover

It was revealed in this Gothic, eerie, and rather bizarre episode "Sub Rosa" the Howard woman going back several generations all had the same ghostly lover named Ronin. After her grandmother's death, Ronin set his sights on seducing and possessing Beverly.

Ronin really wasn't a ghost but was an anaphasic entity who needed a human host with special compatible biochemistry in order to exist and who was willing to kill to get what he wants. Some notable events in this episode include Ronin's seduction of Beverly, her resignation from Starfleet and subsequent departure from the Enterprise, a mysterious death, the attack of Picard who tried to help Beverly, and then also of La Forge, the reanimation of her grandmother's body in the cemetery, and Beverly's ultimate decision to save herself from becoming the next in the long line of Howard women to share a parallel existence with this anaphasic lifeform. Hate it or love it, this is one episode you won't soon forget.

Question by christi_dove
14. In the future depicted in the "TNG" episode "All Good Things", what was Beverly Crusher's job and location?

Answer: Captain of USS Pasteur

In this reality, Jean-Luc Picard was moving between time periods in the past, present and future. In each time period, he needed to get to the Devron system to investigate an anomaly. This was easy in the past and present as he was still in command of the Enterprise-D. However in the future he was a retired ambassador and needed to call upon the services of his ex-wife, the now Captain Beverly Crusher, who took him to the Devron system aboard her ship, USS Pasteur.

Question by Daddy19
15. Dr. Crusher was greatly interested in the advancement of the sciences and after attending a conference she worked to support the unconventional research of a scientist by bringing together, on the Enterprise, scientists from other planets to learn about his research into metaphasic shielding. The scientist who invented metaphasic shielding technology was a Klingon.

Answer: False

The scientist was Ferengi, not Klingon. The suspenseful episode "Suspicions," was about Dr. Reyga, the Ferengi scientist, who came on board the Enterprise to share his invention of metaphasic shielding which would even allow a shuttle to enter a star's corona and withstand the deadly radiation, pressure, and energy existing there. Besides promoting scientific discovery, Dr. Crusher became an investigator to unravel the mystery of how a scientist named Dr. Jo'Bril died (or did he?) during the testing of the metaphasic shielding and to find out if the Ferengi scientist Reyga killed himself or was murdered.

Her investigations even lead her to violate Starfleet regulations and disobey Picard which resulted in her being relieved of duty.
